Is it worth it to spend so much on cosmetics or skin care?
« on: June 29, 2011, 08:30:06 pm »
I'm already in the process of completing my makeup kit... It seems I will have to spend and fork over more or less 40k

Face: Budget more or less 15k, may shipping pa e...

RMK Foundation - 2.6k
RMK Powder Foundation -3.8k
RMK Color Control - 2.1k
Guerlain Meteorites Light Diffusing Primer - 4k?? mall price ata ito? The price of glowy complexion is very expensive....
Setting Powder - no brand specified yet...., budget 2k

Eyes: Budget more or less 5k

Urban Decay Naked Palette -
Pencil Liner Brown and Black - Brand????? di ko pa alam, thinking mufe or ud, pwede cheaper but has to be really at par with high end ones....
Tony Moly Gel Liner Black and Brown - Cheaper and very similar dupe ng Bobbi Brown
Tony Moly Tear Drops in white just in case feel ko mag pa kikay ng konti

Cheeks: Budget 5k

2 x Tarte Cheek Stain - 1.5 or a little less ng konti,
Nars Orgasm - 1350
Nars Laguna - 1650????

Lips: Budget more or less 5k

1 x Nars Matte Lipstick
2 x Nars Lipgloss
Tony Moly Stains - good dupe
I wanted the palette and the value set pero sayang if I don't use it naman everyday.. plus parang nadudumihan ako pag palette ang lips... nars has one pero parang untidy na feel ko pag katagalan....

Other Lemings that I really plan to buy

M2 Skin Refinish Face and Body
Clarisonic for Body and Face

Budget 10k???? uncertain kase kung ano talaga type ko na set ng clarisonic

So a whopping 40k..... worth it ba? Am I sick na ba?  Is this being over budget already??? maluho na ba?????

I have forked over 9k recently on the face products, and plan to haul more on shangrila next week... plan to buy the guerlain and nars lippies....  its for my wedding day and syempre everyday wear na din, just to be a bit more presentable and mabawasan ang pagkababaya... Kaso when I wanted to do this makeover, it is so costly!!!!!! As in sobra!

I don't like clothes pero fetish ko and makeup and good body products talaga... Mayroon din akong makeup stash, foundies of shu and nars, sayang they don't match my shade na... di ko naman talaga feel bumili ng dupes na kaperehas lang ng kulay pero hindi naman talaga same in terms of staying power and finish.

Nasama lang tony moly kase sabi sa net its really at par with more expensive ones, both the liners and stains....

So worth it nga ba?  Should I spend?  Kaya naman ng powers ko bumili :-[, its just I feel guilty..... Para akong bumibili ng aircon... hehe, and for a person like me who thinks savings is top priority, splurges like this make me think twice. Kase nga biglaan.....

Yeah sis, me too... Pero minsan iniisip ko, nalilipasan ako ng panahon wanting things and not buying them.
Trabaho ng trabaho, loosing time to take care of myself, especially appearance - lalo na I lost weight pa ng 20pounds, pagkakataon magbago!:)....
Bata pa ako!:)

Parang sobra yung kit, but those are just mere basics ng makeup..Medyo mataas lang price because most are branded...

Sis, I think it's better to spend more on skin care than on cosmetics though. But, yeah, this sounds a bit too much sis...maybe just buy the necessities kasi sayang naman baka mag-expire lang and di mo magamit lahat.

Like, if you need foundation, just get one kind. choose ka na lang between liquid or powder foundie. If you're gonna get powder foundation, you won't need setting powder anymore.

For cheeks, if you're gonna buy Nars, then get that na lang. Yung Orgasm ang maganda. Take note, it will last a long time, so sulit naman siya. Pero meron rin namang cheaper alternatives na similar to Nars Orgasm.

For eyeliners, it doesn't need to be super expensive brands. Daming magandang brands that will not burn a hole in your pocket.

Hope that helps!  :D

Invest on skincare first, saka mo build your makeup kit paunti-unti.  Hindi mo mamamalayan complete
mo na yan lahat.

i think its too much sis. :)

agree ako kay sis juana_antonia, invest in skin care na lang muna. for me, if a girl has really good skin, minimal na ang make-up na kailangan.

but then if you're planning to buy them for  your wedding (tama ba intindi ko?), then that might be worth it kasi that's your special day. pero kung pang-araw-araw lang naman, hinay-hinay ka na muna. :)

It's worth it if it will make you happy and of course, if you will be using all of them and hindi mag-e-expire lang due to non-usage. As long as you don't spend beyond your means then that is fine. :)

But I agree that it is better to invest on skin care products. No makeup, even the most expensive ones, can compensate for having better skin. :)

^i agree with sis sugardrop. concentrate on skincare than make-up.. no amount of make-up can cover bad skin. then again, when it comes to skincare, it really boils down to which brand you are 'hiyang', whether it's expensive or not. i always try out products that are affordable and easily accessible because i also consider the cost of maintaining my skincare regimen. it's no use if i splurge on LaMer, Clarins, SKII, at ano pa ba mamahalin na brands on the market kung magugutom ako whole year round! hehe. buti nalang hiyang nako sa NIVEA. ;D ;D but if u can afford and maintain it naman sis, go go go!! ;)

sa make-up naman, guilty ako na some gusto ko branded..haha.. but hindi lahat. i buy expensive m.u. rarely kasi antagal din maubos and make-up ko very basic din. i think sis di naman kailangan branded lahat.. you can splurge on some and save on some. like for me, i splurge on concealer, foundie and blush the most kasi ito constantly ginagamit ko and these are the stuff you apply directly on your skin so they better be good and trusted products to avoid skin problems.  tipid2x ako sa eyeshadow, lipstick, liners because i really seldom use these stuff (probably except for the UD naked pallete worth it naman yun haha)  meron din naman drugstore brands that are as good as expensive brands. whichever works for you. but i must admit, i was shocked for a brief moment when i read 40k for make-up alone.  ;D

I agree with cherub.rock and sugardop. On the other hand, I personally think that it's not the amount or brand that matters but the quality of the product/s. Spend if you think that a product is worth every penny you'll be paying for it and if it works for you (which I think is the key to shopping). Hold back if you think there are less expensive options that perform equally as the more expensive ones. I don't mind paying more for foundations, blushes (there are some pretty good inexpensive blushes nowadays, though), eyeshadows, lipsticks and eyeliners (although Milani Cosmetics make really good pencil eyeliners but in very limited colors) because I have seen the difference (I used to buy inexpensive ones a lot coz of my reasoning "I can buy 10 of these with 1 of those") but refuse to spend on mascaras, glosses and lip liners. And just as long as you're spending within your means, I think you're fine. Bottom line is go for it if it's worth it, if it works for you and if you can afford it.

Oh, and it's so much better to spend on skincare than cosmetics unless you already have amazing skin. Find what works for you and your skin and stick with it. That's what I do. Good luck  ;)

Unless you exhibit a great deal of talent and passion for it, I don't really think it's worth spending money on cosmetics. To be blunt, there are so many beauty bloggers out there and even here in GT and only very few are actually good at it. I'm not saying they should stop blogging; just that only a few can justify the obscene amount of money they spend on makeup.

As for skin care, that still depends on your needs. If you have a medical condition and your doctor prescribed certain products, by all means, if you can afford it, go and buy. But if it's just for maintenance, consider the fact that your lifestyle has a lot more to do with your skin than anything else. No amount of skin peeling or whatever is the rage right now could alter the effects of a sedentary lifestyle, of smoking, of lack of sleep, of booze, etc.

Also, those products that have these outrageous claims-you have to treat them like drugs that carry some side effects and that in the long run, their risks may far outweigh their benefits. So overall, it's an unequivocal no for me. Of course, your money, your decision but for me, it's an absolute waste.

I think it's not practical to spend that much on make up in one big blow unless you intend to make a profession out of it. I put my money on skin care cus no matter how expensive your make up is, if your skin doesnt look healthy, you rmake up will just look pasty against your skin. Skin care also has long term effects.

If you have that big of money to blow on make up, you are entitled to it. Pero if your reason lang is cus you want to complete your make up kit, uh, hello? And the fact that you are also thinking na it's excessive and absurd means na it's obviously unreasonable.

In my opinion, 40k if spent on skincare and treatments is worth it (heck that's only 1 trip to Belo), but I think waaay tooo much for make-up.

wow sis! you have to ask yourself what and why you want them..
GT is a big influence when I buy stuff from head to toe. I have to admit that.
But since I am here in the US, I get the chance to try and I can still return them if it doesn't work.
Jan sa Pinas, I believe there are gt members that get to try from testers on the counter or
some are nice enough to share to try. This stuff that you want to buy, have you tried them all?
Good reviews is a plus but we all have different skin so all the good reviews may not be as good for
your skin type. If you intend to have this as a career it's a plus to consider but for a start, IMHO, nope.
I did spent that much but not in a heart beat :) Maybe buy stuff when there's a sale or here sa GT.
That's how I started when I was still there, I buy here sa GT, when the cosmetics needs new home or just some
back-ups. You really better think twice sis! :)

^^^^^^^

1. Do I plan to make a blog or profession about makeup? No, the feeling of insecurity is the only reason I feel like or already have splurged.

2. Spending on skincare? I have a pretty good skin naman, siguro I feel haggard and sometimes ang dating e pagod na pagod ang aking face...
I'm only 26, and I feel I lack the glow and swing that a 26 year old should have.  Kaya bigla akong nagdecide to spend
a big one before I get married... Wala naman kase akong bisyo, no nightlife, pero I feel getting married will make me less accessible to spending on what I like... Kase kasal na nga... anyhow Ot na ko....

3. 40k too much?  Yes, ako din I feel its too much, that's why I wanted to seek advice... actually only about 30k lang ang makeup dito, and halos 20k na lang kulang ko... hehe
Ewan ko, may nagging feeling ako na gustong gusto ko talaga bumili, pero I'll try my best and lessen yung gastos and listen to you guys.

^^^^^^^Have you guys ever spent so much, biglaan? Like on clothing? Traveling? Skin Care? Clarisonic?
I don't like the feeling na ako lang pala ang gumasgastos ng ganito... Kayo??? Have you had similar expenses like on gluta injc.? Derma?

Response naman sa may mga "sakit" din dyan! lol! :)

Last question, if you build your makeup kit slowly, hindi ka ba maabutan ng expiration dates? tapos bibili ka ulit din naman? kulang na naman?

^^
To be honest, from December 26 last year til January 8, I spent a total of 56k on both makeup and skin care combined. And most of the makeups I bought, I sold din when I realized I don't really need them. I found the skin care products I bought back then more worth it than the makeups. Kasi when my skin got better, I found myself using less and less makeup. :)
Di ako nagyayabang that I spent that much but to also somehow share my experience on that. Mas worth it mag-invest on skin care and luckily, I found inexpensive but effective products from Healthy Options. And recently, I've bought more skin care products than makeup. :)

mas worth it to spend on skin care than cosmetics.  And sugardrop is right na we have to invest in skincare.  That way, less expense for cosmetics.  Besides, kapag skincare, you will reap the benefits for years..

I can understand the need to splurge for yourself since you're getting married and entering a new chapter in your life. I think it's a valid point kasi most of my friends who are now married don't get to spend as much for themselves anymore. Pero yung pag-splurge din naman must be in moderation. Buy what you need and you see yourself using for a long time. Of course, as all our sisters have mentioned, skin care is always first priority, you'll thank yourself later on.

As for makeup, do you really have to revamp your kit? Keep what works and buy enhancements na lang to what you already have. You don't need to change everything. Ako, madalas ako mag-hoard ng makeup and medyo malaki nagagastos ko every time. But I've realized that I can only use so much and I always end up going back to using what I was using before. So medyo stick with what works ako ngayon, after all, I have more than enough.

With the products on your list, have you actually tried them to warrant the purchase? Lalo na yung foundations. Tricky kasi to buy foundation, mahirap magpasway sa raves kasi hindi same ang finish niya for everyone. Even the meteorites, I bought one kasi naintriga ako, the effect was just short-lived for me plus tamad naman ako gamitin siya so I ended up selling lang din.

I have a different perspective.  If make-up is your passion, then it'll never be too much.  Just like a painter who has tubs and tubs of paint in all kinds and colors.

I think your list is not really 'too much'.  The only problem is, you're all buying them at the same time.  I, for example, is not much into skin care and cosmetics.  I only have the basics... a pressed powder, a loose powder, a concealer, a lip primer, lip balm, eye shadows, a few brushes, a powder blush, a liquid blush, some lipsticks, eyebrow stuff, and a few more.  If I add the cost of everything, I'll probably get close to 40k too.  The only difference is, I didn't buy them all at the same time.  Let's say, this month I ran out of the lip primer, then that's the only thing I'll buy.  It never crossed my mind that I'm spending 40k on make-ups because I didn't spend money for that in one go.

To lessen the guilt (hehe) maybe you can start buying the essentials first.  Then just add an item or two every so often.  =)
