I have the same question as Mikasa. Do you think that a class/workshop would be essential for an enthusiast? I've been learning from experience lang and internet tutorials so far.

BTW, does anyone here own a TAMRON 17-50mm lens? OK ba? I have the kit lens lang and a 50mm f1.8 prime lens. A friend suggested the Tamron to me.

Hi im just talking about personal experience here. True that you can actually learn everything from google/books/ youtube. An advantage for workshops though

1. Mentorship- techniques, styles of the masters you can modify are not written in the books
2. They teach you how to deal with your subjects. directing/ orchestrating/ telling your subjects or how to deliver what you conceptualiZe
3. They are honest critics. Unlike if you shoot and post lang sa fb. Everyone will just say its a good shot. For me there is not much room for improvement if you dont allow your work to be criticized
4. Workshops allow you to meet other enthusiasts. I take it as one of my chance to socialize
5.  some workshops you pay for the venue, the models (flashes setup) hassle minsan if you setup on your own.

I attend different workshops, then i practice on my own. I must say its an education to invest

Regarding workshops, only the most basic knowledge is essential. For example you should learn about aperture, shutter speed, focusing, composition/framing. The rest will really depend on your talent, i.e. if you really have that 'eye' for photography.

I attended a workshop of Winston Baltasar, a pro photographer. Mura lang sya, and his studio is in Makati. Because of him I now know how to use the Manual mode of my camera. Hindi intimidating and iga-guide ka talaga. And his assistants are so nice.

Hobby ko photography kaso wala naman ako kasama mag practice. Kaya Ayun nakatambak yun dslr ko.  I attend Sir Nicolay basic photography last 2012 kaso nakalimutan ko na pero andito pa din yun hand outs ko. I will try other mentor pag May time.

^^ Sis cheezecake, nung time ko (not sure sa exact amount, hindi kasi ako nagbayad, regalo lang) 1300-1500 yata sa Basics sa umaga, then may actual photoshoot sa afternoon 1800 yata yun depende sa kung sinong model. IF you want the whole day, both the basics and photoshoot 2800 yata ang package. It was July pa last year ha.. Now I am not sure with the prices.

There are times na ang models are FHM girls. Sa actual photoshoot, you will learn about flash photography. Kaw talaga pagseset-up-in ng ilaw at you are the one to direct the models. Oh di ba? But you will be guided the whole time.

I love photography too. I took the basic course kaso tinatamad lately kaya medyo nakalimutan ko yung ibang technics. I have an older DSLR Canon T2i a 24-105mm L lens and the 50mm 1.4.  Thinking of upgrading to a full frame DSLR soon a canon 5D or 6D.

Bigla tuloy namuhay lemming ko sa prime lens. I wonder kung may 1.8 nang nilabas ang nikkor for the mirrorless. Tagal ko naring di nagagamit cam ever since nasira laptop ko. I am enjoying htc one's camera though.

^Not necessarily, but lessons sure would help.

I used to be a self taught photographer (did shoots for magazines and various brands) without having taken a photography course. I only enrolled in photography school in  late 2011 because I had lots of spare time. I learned a few tricks. Most of what they taught, I already knew. So, I guess lessons help but your willingness to explore  is more important.

Ako I was self-taught din, with konting help from ex-bf.. Then he surprised me with a workshop with his photographer friend. So ayun, naintindihan ko lalo. Pero gaya ng sabi ni sis prunella, ang willingness mo to learn and explore ang pinakaimportante.

And lots of practice..
