I LOVE this thread! Ang daming recommendations; keep them coming please! Na realize ko kasi na puro foreign writers ang binabasa ko kaya this 2013 my goal is to read books by Filipino writers naman. The last time I read such books are during college pa eh, unless you count comics/graphic novels

Utos ng Hari at Iba Pang Kuwento by Jun Cruz Reyes. The title story "Utos ng Hari" is a personal favorite of mine. His stories are a mirror of our lives then and now told in the language of the "ordinary" Pinoy.

This was part of the reading materials we had for Filipino subject back in grade school. I loved Utos ng Hari even back then.

I had first read my mom's copy of Bata, Bata… Pa’no Ka Ginawa? by Lualhati Bautista I think when I was in high school (or could be in Grade 6, I'm not quite sure). It had greatly influenced the way I would think and act as a teenager. Pa-feminist effect. Para ako palaging naghahanap ng away. Haha! Then, of course, I went on to read her other 2 works - ‘GAPÔ and Dekada '70. I've outgrown that kind of thinking, of course. I'm more relaxed now, and picky of the battles I get myself into these days. 

I've never purchased any of Jessica Zafra's books, but I was an avid follower of her column Womanagerie in a woman's magazine (Woman Today yata). I have still saved some of the clippings from the articles she wrote.

Also, I used to have this book by Danton Remoto called Ladlad. It was well-written.

Pero, ang lagi kong naaalala na kwento, yung nabasa ko nung HighSchool pa ko.
Di ko na maalala ang title, pero tungkol sa torture. Parang pulis ba sha or something tapos dine-describe doon kung pano sha mang-torture.

tsaka yung Turn Red The Sea, yung Tata Selo at Impeng Negro... yun na lang ang medyo naaalala ko pa.

Tungkol sa kwento ng mag-ama na nung bata pa yung anak, nakita nya na may babae yung tatay nya.
Tapos di na nya kinausap yung tatay nya, tapos namatay na yung tatay nya saka lang sha umuwi.
Parang sculptor yata yung tatay nya or something.... patulong naman, baka alam mo...

Alam nyo, Ive stopped reading these kind of stories a long time ago.
Dahil busy sa work and sa pagiging mommy.
nagbabasa na lang ako ng mga Twilight-- kasi madali silang basahin, mga teeny bopper stories...

Pero, having seen all of you appreciate Phili. Lit., made me want to start reading these again.
Parang na-rekindle yung passion ko magbasa.

In fact, nasa National Book Store ako kanina, hinahanap ko yung Carlos Palanca Anthology of Short Stories.  Isa lang kasi ang Palanca ko, yung 1980's Short Stories in English.

Sadly, wala daw sa National...
Tinignan ko na nga din yung mga Textbook ng Phil Lit, ang konti
Dati kasi, pakalat-kalat lang yung mga Phil Lit Books dito sa house, ngayon naglaho na sila
and all that's left are my childhood memories of reading them... drama mode...

^Ah, yun ba yung orange na libro?  It comes along with a purple book, which is an anthology of Palanca - Award - winning poems, and a light blue one, which is an anthology of award - winning plays. Yup, I have those collection. Subukan mong magbasa ng mga maikling kuwento mula sa mga university presses. Pumasok na sa sistema kung yung pagbabasa dahil estudyante ako ng panitikan.

Ngayong nasabi mo na may anak ka, wala akong natatandaan na nakakilala ako ng isang ina na mahilig magbasa ng mga binabasa ko. Kung hindi kasi kasing-edad ko ang mga nakikilala ko, mga matatanda naman (at mga tanyag na manunulat pa) 

Alam mo, bihira lang ang mga taong wala sa akademiya na mahilig magbasa (at isang nanay pa). Kung wala kang oras para magbasa, gumawa ka  Subukan mong magsulat, dahil tutal mahilig ka namang magbasa
