Sis, do not think of backward responsibility more than your future responsibility.

Pagtanda natin, we have to accept na mag-isa tayo.  Kung baga yun ang default. Kung makasama man tayo ng anak natin, then good.  Pero one thing is important, we have to have enough retirement for ourselves to make sure na hindi natin i-bu-burden ang ibang tao in the same way that some are being a burden to us now.

Pero sis mommycute46, may point ka.  mga pamangkin na tinulungan mo, hindi ka na matutulungan, kasi aside from their own immediate families pag nagka family na sila, syempre uunahin nilang tulungan ang parents nila kesa sa iyo. Hindi naman sa naghahanap tayo ng kapalit sa pagtulong, ang point ko lang is we have to first ensure that we can sustain our own retirement before helping others.  How can you help others, kung ikaw mismo naghihingalo?

Napost ko narin ito before - I think read this from Colayco's book. Kelangan mo unahin sarili mo otherwise, you wont be capable of helping.

sis, clarify ko lang  ;D, "sinu titingin sa 'yo pagtanda mo" means it's not financially depending on your child pero yong alam mo lang na anjan lang sila para sa 'yo dahil kadugo mo sila. Saka mas masarap pa ring alagaan ka ng sarili mong anak kesa maghire ka ng nurse na di mo kilala para lang maalagaan ka or dalhin mo sarili mo sa home for the aged  ;D.  But of course kailangan din may retirement plan tayo para in the future hindi naman tayo pabigat sa mga anak natin. Atleast yong care lang on the other aspect ang hahanapin natin sa kanila hindi yong pambili ng gamot dahil me sakit na tayo dulot ng katandaan or mapa luho pa man yan.

Wow, this is a great thread that I can relate to.  ;D I grew up in Canada kaya medyo iba ang values namin ng siblings ko when it came to this topic. Pinakita lang ng parents ko sa amin na we have no responsibility whatsoever to them pagtanda and they are here to support us. Pero nag university ako sa Phil kaya nakuha ko rin ang values na utang ng loob and to be there for your parents when they get old. Kaya lang for me, I dont need to support them kasi their doing very well.

However my wife's family is a totally different story, shes the youngest and is the breadwinner for her parents and her sister's family and sometimes for her brother's family as well. Dati, even before we were married, we would always fight about this pero in the end I gave in na rin kasi I know shell never change and will always give to her family. I tried talking to her family pero wala rin, talagang they believe in the concept na whoever is striving and doing better in life has the obligation to give, parang nahalo na sa DNA nila, hehe.. :p

Fortunately for me rin, ganun rin ang mom ko sa siblings nya and my dad was ok with it. Pero I know how hard it is for foreigners who marry Pinays and cant grasp the concept of their wives giving everything to their family members. Say the word martyr to a foreigner and its a totally different meaning to them. I used to tell her we could give P100,000 or P1, it would be the same kasi the mere principle of it was wrong.

But to be fair to my wife, mabait naman ang family nya and hindi nag aabuso kaya ok lang sa akin and my wife is working as well and I still control the budget/finances. Pero of course to this very day, we still fight over money as she always wants to give more.

This time, wala talaga akong mabigay na advice sa mga taong ganito. The most practical advice would be to give your parents or siblings tough love and stop giving them money until they reach the point na they HAVE to fend for themselves and move. Pero that doesnt really work for parents kasi theyre old and cant really work for themselves. Also, most cases siblings will say their taking care of the parents kaya tama lang rin na bigyan nyo sila. And knowing Filipinas, di talaga matiis ang families/parents nila.

So the best thing to do is budget your money properly and give a fixed amount that you can give them which wont deprive you and/or your family of  your family's needs. This way, youre still giving and so you wont feel guilty kasi most of the time, thats the only reason we really give in the end, because of being emotionally blackmailed by our relatives. I suggest reading the last part of Fransico Colayco's book Pera Mo, Paliguin mo where he writes a letter to his daughter or an OFW (I cant remember anymore) about how she shouldnt let relatives suck her dry. I treid googling it, but couldnt find it so I guess youll just have to buy the book or borrow it from a friend.

I'm an eldest child and a breadwinner. Because of this I'm scared to have my own family, having this kind of responsibility is difficult.

No sis, dont be this way, marry Mike Westen na and have your own family. ;D

One time while in a train overseas.

I heard a 50+ year old caucasian woman tell her friend na she will go on vacation to Egypt with her daughter, kkb sila.

Naisip ko tuloy dito sa Pinas.  Tiyak, libre hindi kkb.

My friend who married an American had similar issues before, nagpapadala kasi sya every month and the husband can't understand why. I married to a Canadian and that didn't become an issue. From the beginning of the relationship kasi pinaliwanag ko na ang ganyang kultura sa kanya. And also, hindi ako nagpapadala when I stopped working. Now that I went back to work, minsanan lang din ako magpadala. There was an article in Yahoo one time about the least Canadian save for, which is college education for kids. The comments said one thing, let the kids work for their higher education so they will know the value of hardwork and money. My in-laws would rather be in the old age home than to be with their kids when they grow old. I guess, there's a certain pride in being able to fend for yourself (or not being a burden to other people) in their culture. Maybe that's one of the reason why Canada is a first world country.

Sis, do not think of backward responsibility more than your future responsibility. Think of yourself also, paano kung hindi ka magkapamilya, sinu titingin sa 'yo pagtanda mo? your parents? of course not mas mauuna na sila kesa sa 'yo. Your siblings dahil tinulungan mo sila? no...they have their own families too... minsan pa nga kung sino ang natulungan sila ang walang utang na loob...your nephews? wag ka na umasa, magka2roon na rin mga yan ng sariling pamilya, and you are not their priorities. Pasalamat ka na lang kung makapag thank you sila after helping them.

Sis lagi din sinasabi ng parents ko sa akin yan and I would joke that I'll save up lots of money and put myself in a retirement or nursing home.  ;D

I agree with you Sis blooming. I'm helping my family not because gusto ko tumanaw ng utang na loob. I really just love them that's why I'm helping them. This might offend some sissies  but I don't believe na utang na loob ng anak na ipinanganak siya. Remember its the parents choice to have a child. The first time that I told this to my Mom, she got really hurt, she thought I was complaining about this whole breadwinner thing. I just wanted to educate my parents that it's really wrong to make your kids pay you back  for raising them. Ngayon naiintindihan na ako ng parents ko. The problem with most traditional Filipino parents is that they think their kids are investment.

No sis, dont be this way, marry Mike Westen na and have your own family. ;D

Sis he too does not want to get married and have kids  ;  ;D

It was painful for me too when I had to tell them "enough" but I had to do it. Otherwise, they continue to take advantage of my kindness.

My mother doesnt seem to care about me. All she wants is money, to the point that she lied to me that she's sick, she needs hearing aid, she has cataract which are all lies >:(

Actually, early on, kelangan talaga nila ng "tough" love.  Kahit pa anong pintas ang abutin nyo, God knows you care. By then, too late na sila magbago.

Palaguin mo.  Balang araw, kakailanganin mo yan not only for yourself but also FOR THEM.  Kung umabot sila sa life/death situation, that's the only time you help them.  Imagine all the P1k's-P5k's na iaabot mo sa kanila for the next years/months (para sa matrikula, kuryente, utang ng kapatid dahil sa pang-inom o kung ano ano pa), kung itago mo nalang para pangtulong sa kanila kung nangailangan sila kasi health/life/death ang sitwasyon.  Point ko lang siguro alamin natin how to differentiate when to help and when not to.

Kahit pa panganganak (you have 9 months to plan for this) or education (people know when ang bayaran ng tuition naman at may public school naman din).

Pero kung naitabi natin ang savings for rainy days imbis na nailustay nila sa kung saan-saan, mas mapupunta ang hard-earned money natin where it is needed the most - to save lives.

This is sooo true Sis Blooming.  I wish there was someone who has taught me all these before.  It could have prevented me from being bitter & calloused :'(

Its so unfair talaga... naghirap din ako at nagsikap para makarating to where I am now.

nakakaloka naman ito... mawawalan ka ng tiwala sa kanya pag ganyan na.. lokohan para lang makakuha ng pera.. i've been in this situation and now i always doubt if she really needs money

I hope may gumawa ng pelikula about this Filipino culture. Para magising ang mga Pinoy. I'm sure maraming makakarelate. Baka ito na gigising sa industriyang Pilipino.

I hope school start educating both Parents and Students with regards to this matter. Students through Character Education and Parents through PTCA meetings.

I'm a breadwinner too and to tell you the truth it became painful when they all reason out ikaw yung nakakaluwag. Well sana magawa na namin mag-asawa we wanted sana makabukod. I'm hoping and praying.

BTW, my parents are living with us. I'm married with one kid. My sister has a minimum wage job, she has 4 kids, two living with us, two living with them. Her husband walang trabaho.

To all those who help you siblings and parents kudos and God Bless. More and more blessings!

there is really something wrong with this aspect of our culture.  hindi kasi naging innate sa older generations natin ang mag-save for their own retirement.  yan tuloy, while the younger adults are busy making ends meet for their children, obligated ka rin tumulong sa parents mo and mga kapatid who are not doing well.  i don't mind helping every now and then pero yung kasama na sa monthly budget mo, parang hindi tama.  i'm glad hindi naman ganito sa family ko.  pero kasi yung family ni hubby, medyo ganito ang mentality.  kahit pang-hong kong ng sister and pamangkin, ihihingi sa kanya!  naman, ok lang siguro yung needs pero yung luho rin iaasa sa iba?   >:(

Total of 5 kids gusto ng mother ko i-support ko just because I don't have kids. I told her kung umuwi sya ng province, may allowance ulet sya. Ako pa tuloy yung di nagkaanak since sobrang late na when I get married dahil sa kaka support sa kanila.

Right now yung 2 nephews ko yung sinu support ko sa brother ko. Pero this time, may condition na. I will continue yung allowance basta 85 yung grade pataas.

We have to learn to set boundaries & exercise tough love, if needed.

^ yan ang ayoko mangyari sa akin, ako lang kasi unang nakapagtapos but not all expenses came from my parents. Kumbaga 1/3 scholar ako ng parents ko, 1/3 sariling sikap and 1/3 gov't scholar. Then I came to realize na ang magiging rule ko pala sana ay breadwinner at tagasupport ng mga kapatid ko. Siguro it's a blessing in disguise na rin na maaga ako nagkababy para habang malakas pa ako kumita, may patutunguhan ang kinikita ko. Hindi sa pagdadamot but I don't want to reach the situation na hndi na ako magkakapamilya just because I have to support my siblings. I want to help but I don't want to be obligated.

Pero they always depict this in a positive light. :P

nope, been there, done that. it wont work out. itaga mo na sa bato. the fact that theyre not able to manage their life, what makes them think they can manage other people's business wherein they have nothing at stake sa business?

I mean you mentioned na you dont have kids. so you have to make sure you have enough nest egg to fall back to when you retire, kasi kung meron ka man suportahan dyan sa mga batang yan, parents nila ang uunahin nila when the time comes and baka later in life, ikaw rin ang mahirapan.

have you tried exploring adoption - it is a great joy to have babies/kids at home - na ikaw ang kinikilalang magulang. :)

there is really something wrong with this aspect of our culture.  hindi kasi naging innate sa older generations natin ang mag-save for their own retirement.  yan tuloy, while the younger adults are busy making ends meet for their children, obligated ka rin tumulong sa parents mo and mga kapatid who are not doing well.

I tried talking to these people - and try to understand their psychy on - how on earth someone in the right mind do this?

So parang nakita ko narin in their perspective.  SHORT TERM sila. short-sighted kung baga.  They give their all to the education of their kid/kids kung hanggang san makakaya. "Sacrifice" daw yun at sobra silang dakilang mga magulang para bigyan ng priority ang education ng anak over themselves.
Kaso mo - feeling ko - walang nagsabi sa kanila kung ilang kids lang ang kaya nila i-raise.  During the time na nagdecide sila to have kids, "kakayanin naman siguro".  Pangalawa, wala din nagsabi sa kanila na mahal magretire - at hindi man lang sumayad sa isip nila na once they retire, no income, wala silang makakain - so ang nakikita nila sa kapitbahay, mga anak ang nagtataguyod, eh di ganun nadin sila. And maybe in terms of life planning, somewhere between sa pag-anak nila at pagretire nila, tatama sila sa lotto.  ;D

Kaya ako, in terms of spending money, I would opt to prioritize saving for retirement kesa sa edukasyon ng anak. Pero this does not mean hindi mo ipapaaral anak mo. Tsaka you have to talk to your kids about it - na if possible for them to also work or magsideline at hindi mo kakayanin lahat, at kung mangutang ka, they have to pay back the utang once they graduate/find a job. This would give your kids the sense of responsibility narin and you won't be saddled with education loans when you retire (pag graduate nila ng college more or less lapit ka na sa retirement mo kung hindi ka pa pa-retire).
Oo you may not be able to provide the full PREMIUM education to them, pero, you can guarantee them that they can pursue their dreams however they want kasi you have your retirement fund to fall back to. At kung magbigay pa sila sa iyo for your retirement, gravy nalang sya.

Ang education loan/utang - the kids have 40 years to pay for it after they graduate.  Pero once you exhaust all your funds for their education, by the time they graduate, ikaw ang walang pera and old - san ka pa makahanap ng income at a retiring age, buti kung may biz pero kung wala, pano ka makapagtabi for retirement?  slim chance. therefore ang normally nagiging default ng mga magulang na inubos ang money sa pagpapaaral ng anak sa magandang schools (kahit hindi kasi afford) eh talagang aasa sa anak - and here is where the conflict starts.

sis, exactly! ang kapal ng mukha ano?
pero you see, ang reasoning kasi nila, ikaw madalas ka daw mag abroad. kaya DAPAT sila din. duh! sino kaya nagpapakahirap magtrabaho!!?  Ewan, there is just this thing in Philippine culture na kung nakaka experience ka ng good things, DAPAT sila din! naiinggit b pero walang means, kaya they resort to hingi nalang ng panluho nila instead na paghirapan.

I agree Sis Blooming. Todo prepare talaga ako for retirement. I don't mind staying in a nursing home. Eh ngayon pa nga lang ang daming kalokohan na dinanas ko sa half brother & sisters ko so what more pag oldie na ko.

Ayaw ni hubby mag adopt so right now, I have 3 World Vision scholars aside from my nephew. I don't expect anything from them. I'm happy that in my own little way, I am able to help.
