I don't agree with that Art of Manliness excerpt. Kasi we don't actually need much. When I gave away many of my clothes, shoes, our appliances, etc. Parang never ko pa ata naranasan to buy something I gave away na I needed pala. And if that does happen. Wala akong naisip na kakailanganin ko that would require me to be really well off para mabili ulit. Most naman ng extras natin are the tiny little things like extra belt, extra shoes, extra gadgets.

If you can't buy those when you need them, the problems lies maybe on not knowing how to handle money or talagang below poverty line ka na. And for those below the poverty line, minimalism is not a choice anymore. It's what they need to do to survive.

Those na may extra money, minimalism is a choice. Kasi you have the option. You can afford to have way more things than you actually need. But you can choose not to do that.

That said, I still struggle with way too much lipsticks. :(

After doing minimalism on my last wedding celeb, my next project to minimalism is of having a baby. I am 7 months preggy and we are already practicing minimalism for our first unico hijo. My husband, at first, doesn't want to try this but after explaining minimalism, Naintindihan nya din.
1. So far We will use old stroller, old new born clothes, old crib and old walker of our nephew and niece. 2. For the baby bottle holders or keeps, we will use a plastic box (parang lock n lock) instead of the usual baby bottle holders. Para after, pwede pa magamit ang box sa ibang bagay (unlike the baby bottle holders).
3. For the baby travel bag, we do not buy the usual baby bag. Instead, we buy a bag na pwede gamitin ni hubby or pwede ko din gamitin after. Syempre, choose the bag na matibay na.
4. We do not buy steriliser because we're planning to sterilise the bottles in the kettle. Lagi kasi kami nag-iinit ng water kapag may maliligo (we don't use hot shower kasi malakas sa kuryente), so dun na namin isasabay.

Isip pa kami ng iba pa for minimalist living of having a baby.

^suggestions ko eto sis:
1. breastfeed your baby, best for a minimalist person.. ;)
2. use cloth diaper.. in the long run, malaki benefit nito hindi lang satin, pati sa kalikasan.. ;D

1. De clutter kitchen utensils , dining utensils , bedroom pillows etc.

3. Yung mga plants namin sa labas is edible garden.

I think this can be achieved by:
1. Having only what you need.. the essentials. The 'wants' should be kept to a minimum..very minimal, almost non-existent.
2. Changing your point of view about material possessions. Be unattached to material things. Focus instead on relationships, experiences, things that nourish the soul.
3. Stay away from temptation aka malls! Cos you will always find there things to buy, new designs, innovative products that'll make you think you need them but really don't.

Anyone here applying Minimalist Living not only in material things but other commitments as well? A few years ago, ang dami kong things to learn, bucket list, etc. One day, I decided to weed out the things na feel ko lang but not really necessary in my life. Ang gaan pala sa feeling. Although, I am not scrapping my bucket list entirely, I just eliminated some things out. Me and other "multipotentialite" friends had a talk about this. There are things out there in the world that are not really worth chasing after. I could care less if I a not able to skydive or bungee jump or not see The Louvre. If, however, I am able to do those things, then my life is 10 times more awesome. If I chase after those and end up being disappointed then, my life is 10 times lonelier. Even careerwise, I have always struggled deciding on the things that I want. Now, I have learned to pick one and stick with it.

Does this make sense or am I just being negatron on achieving something here? I just want to live minimally, not only on the material things but other non-material things that I carry on my baggage. Anyway, yun lang. Buti na lang alcohol is not something my husband and I live minimally. Makaisang bote nga mamaya.

^  Same here, I focus on the essentials, not the excess pati sa life dreams and goals.  Ok lang kahit I won't get to travel the whole world, basta napuntahan ko yung few places na gusto ko, I get to have my dreams of marriage and kids.  Yung stuff talaga na important sayo.  I don't want too much money, just a comfortable life, ayoko din super taas sa corporate ladder, I'd rather have a good balance between work and my life to give room for my relationships with family, friends, etc.

Now that I am older, nakikita ko ang wisdom sa sinasabi mo, sis. Why be miserable trying to tick everything off a bucket list di ba? Ang ikli lang ng buhay. Let's enjoy every moment. Thanks for your post. Kaka-inspire.

Ako. I'm in the middle of feeling contented but still hopeful. :)

Wow, may thread pala about minimalist living. Actually i am now planning on how to have a minimalist living. Kabaliktaran ako noon. I have lots of clothes ( especially leggings, pareparehas naman na black but I have like 20 pieces of leggings and sleeveless na black or white madami rin akong binibili at iba't ibang brand pa) Tyaka ko lang naisip na napakagastador ko nga neto lang na kukuha ako ng condo unit near my school.

I am starting to pack and organize the things I will bring sa condo.
Starting with..

MAKE UP : I have tons of make up especially lipsticks. I don't want to throw them away kasi sayang kaya I am planning on organizing it sa may Make up vanity desk ko / Study table ko na rin. I am browsing sa internet about minimalist bedroom designs na pwede ko I apply. Instead of buying a new storage for lipsticks I am crafting a storage using shoe boxes (the big ones) I'm like painting them and making it a little bit simple. If ever I am finished sa crafts ko I will definitely share it here.

I didn't throw away my ruined/ broken make ups but instead I transferred them to another container. Sa broken lipsticks ko, I watched videos sa youtube on how to fix a broken lipsticks so di hassle for me whenever nag bbreak lippies ko.

BOOKS : I have lots of books dito sa main house namin, and to be honest.. Kalat kalat sila. What I am planning to do is I am going get only the ones i needed. I am going to put a shelf sa walls namin and mag lalagay na lang ako ng crafted mini pots sa gilid na medyo heavy para di tumumba yung books. In that way magmumukhang parang cafe yung dining area ko.

CLOTHES : I don't actually throw my clothes but instead I remake them or I design them para mas gumanda, Instead of giving it away or throwing it. I'm planning on selling my preloved clothes. ( Student pa lang ako and I need cash and save up that's why I rather sell them than throw them aaway, Although I give some of my clothes na nung bata pa ako or nalakihan ko na to the people in need)

LIVING ROOM : I don't plan on buying a sofa actually, Kasi most of the time Its either nasa study table ako, sa bed or sa dining area. Di ako tambay actually ng living room namin so what i'm thinking instead of buying a sofa. Bibili na lang ako ng good bed.

FOOD/GROCERIES : I only buy what I need, even though sobra sobra cravings ko recently I really pushed myself on pagpigil. And if di ko napigilan, I only buy small size lang or yung sakto lang na mawala cravings ko. Cereals sa umaga and milk lunch time usually sa school. Dinner i am planning more on veggies and fish muna. Midnight snack if nag crave noodles lang. I made a food inventory where controlado ko pag gastos ko.

APPLIANCES : I dont need microwave. Stove lang kaya ko na mabuhay. I dont need a coffee maker kung kaya ko rin magtimpla ng sarili kong coffee. And I am not planning on buying washing machine muna if kaya ko naman maglaba. Although aircon is number one need ko talaga. ( i cant help it  ;D )

TRANSPORTATION : I learned how to commute, long before palagi ako nag tataxi or grabcar/uber. Like i dont care noon kung how much abutin basta di ako pagpawisan.

SHOPPING : when i go to the mall and saw something i really.. really like, the first thing that comes into my mind is " Do i really need it? Is it really worth it?"  I learned that It will save you a lot of money, when you don't buy anything that you don't really need.

Before I used to have or buy whatever I want, but now I train myself to live with less, I am used to any comfort I can get before and it took so long for me to start being a minimalist. But even before I am quality over quantity, I spend my money on things I know that is worth it or high quality items na di madaling masira. Kaso mas naging wise na ko on spending my money. Starting a new life on my own is quite hard. I now know my responsibilities which led me to be a minimalist now. I didn't expect that having this kind of lifestyle will definitely help me save up and it would be a life-changing and life-giving realization.

awww me too sis!
I'm investing more on learning and memories and travels instead of expensive material things. Super less na talaga. I'm happier. :)

When my husband and I just got our house, I was super excited and thought of all the things to buy for whenever we have visitors like pretty serving platters, extra chairs, folding tables, table decors pero parang once or twice lang naman nagamit. Nasayang lang. So now, I try not to think about what I might need in the distant future. Kung wala pa naman immediate need, then I refuse to buy. All of our occasions at the house eh nairaraos din naman namin kahit kulang ang upuan. Hehe.

This well put sis. I like the term "excess life dreams and goals". Dreams and goals are positive words but it is true, most people including my past self have too much of it na parang hindi na maganda.

Naalala ko lang yung line sa movie na FIGHT CLUB (watch it if you haven't seen it):

"The things you own end up owning you."

So true. With less stuff comes more freedom.

Kaya recently when my cousin asked me kung bakit my hubby and i live in a small condo kahit kaya namin bumili ng mas malaking house, my answer to her was ine word: FREEDOM. We don't have a mortgage (fully paid), we don't pay a lot in utilities, we  don't have to buy lots of furniture, we spend less time cleaning and maintaining, etc. This translates to free time, free money, and just the freedom to live outside the house instead of being trapped in it. We have the time and money to travel, go on hikes around the Phils, fly or drive to a beach on a whim, spend time with friends, etc. I don't think I can ever give up a minimalist lifestyle.

I like living light. It helps me maintain efficiency. Keeping physical and emotional clutter under control allows me to function better. And sleep better.

When out shopping, I know what, why, and where to purchase. I buy only what I need with the occasional splurge. And I have a love-hate relationship with technology. It's just so stressful!

I'm happy that my husband and I are both minimalists. We live in a condo with basic appliances but invested in interior design. Mas cozy sya for me kaysa bigger house tapos ang daming clutter (yung tipong kahit anong linis mo, mukhang madumi parin ;D). We only have 1 car (wedding gift lang) and no plans of buying a new one anytime soon.

Our fashion style is plain, parang uniqlo style and my husband plain polo shirts lang then pants, pero marami nagsasabi very boss-like parin ang dating ni hubby. We believe being plain is classy.

We don't have to buy too much stuff like gadgets and clothes. A few branded things lang. As long as we have our savings because of our minimalist lifestyle, we feel secure.
