when I am shopping, I ask myself first if I can foresee that particular item ending up in the garage sale a year later.

There's this book I'm reading, Ill Fares the Land by Tony Judt. The first sentence perfectly defines the malaise of our time:

Something is profoundly wrong with the way we live today.

Agree?

^ Yes. 100%. You may notice that consumerism basically brought out the "evils" in the world: greed, envy, materialism. Further more, people now are more stressed out, burdened with debt just to keep up with the Joneses (when in fact the Joneses are also broke).

@C-loves-A and the_missus, temptation is really strong and everyday I almost feel that anytime I might just fall off the wagon. What I did is I just taped a message on my 2 credit cards and my ATM that prevens me from buying something that I don't really need. The message is: Harold, remember your bucket list. Then the desire to buy just simply wanes off.

grabe, parang hindi ko 'to kaya. i'm borderline shopaholic. sabi nga ng bf ko, kelan ko raw mapipigilan ang sarili kong magshop? pero on savings, we have our annual target savings so covered naman.

Agree! We don't have time to just sit back and relax and enjoy good conversations. everything is rushed, everyone is aiming for the top and to acquire all kinds of material goods. It's the world we live in now.

I like this topic!

I've been trying to live a minimalist life. I used to hoard things for sentimental reasons and impulsively buy things I don't need but now I try to simplify and refine my life because I'm getting married in a few months and I need to re-assess what material things we really need in our life.

My only problem though is we are both book lovers and we have a LOT of books we cannot part with, so I guess most of our clutter will come from that. :D

Last October, medyo nalibang ako since birthday month namin ni hubby sa dami ng nagastos ko for shopping pero back on track na again this Nov. Good thing is I am pretty sure all the things I bought are necessities din in a way and I am also slowly packing our things for the upcoming house construction hence; I am parting with the non essentials again and again. Sarap din kasing magmove on na and give space for new memories naman. I will also make sure that the new house will only have the really important appliances and furnitures. Problem ko na lang is pano papaliwanag kay mom-in-law ang minimalist taste ko at mukhang mas excited pa siya sa paggawa ng furnitures namin since she has a furniture shop.

I'd like to take into consideration this kind of living. But I want to start with having a minimalist home. That's why I am starting to jot down the things I would want to have in our new home na lilipatan namin hopefully next year. This would help me to become more organized. Pag naumpisahan ko sa house, then everything follows.

if that's how you describe minimalist living, then i've been one for almost ten years now.

goodluck to you all who are trying.  disiplina ang kailangan.

^wow sis sarap naman nyan! was thinking you were stress-free for a decade now.

almost a year pa lang kami sa pagiging minimalist ni hubby though we are really frugal in our living back then. now we are more disciplined, happy, stress-free and enjoys quality life and I hope sa 2011 magtuloy tuloy.

wow! imma feel so proud of me and my husband... i never expect na some really tries to live in a minimalist way. simple living is da best!

siguro for the sisses who'd been trying a minimalist living, hanapin nyo yung mga simpleng bagay na mababaw lang pero nafi-feed naman ang satisfaction.  i dont really do enjoy eating out iba kasi ang lutong bahay... but nakakatuwa pakainin lang ako ng fishball sa tusok tusok, natutuwa na talaga ako. ewan ko ba... i enjoy shopping sa mga tiangge and natutuwa ako lalo na makakakita ako ng cheap buys tapos di mo expect na may tinda din sa mga high end brands...katuwa.im not talking abt pirated or imitations, u can tell naman kc.

good luck to all! =)

my hubby and I are both minimalist and taking life in moderation. We sometimes talk about being senior citizens in 2-3 decades+, and priming about future retirements.

It's a tough way to live.

I had a "retail therapy" period in life. Mahirap talagang mag-wean. Nung nauntog ako, ayun. I decided, enough. I set up a separate savings account for my emergency fund. Threw out all my "just in case" clothes.

I think the last gadget I bought was my MP3 player, najustify ko naman kasi anlakas maka-change ng mood ang music, para sakin. It's my non-chemical upper. Eto, after 5 yrs, it's still lifting my spirits -- near mint condition. (Not that I rely entirely on it ;) ) Palibhasa sabi ko di nako bibili ng kapalit pag nasira. That was my last indulgence.

So I buy @ booksale.  Oh and art supplies.  ::) Wala akong kawala dito, so I try to use mostly found objects. hehe

hirap parents and sister ko to let go..

pero everytime na punta ako sa kanila..
talagang habit na kumuha ng things to dispose..
esp yung mga old shoes ni mother.. :P

angstyle ko, my things are in minimal lang--like i have a few bags lang. one for each occasion.  and when i wanted a bag talaga iniisip ko na kung ano sa mg anasa closet ko ang igi-give-up ko.

ewan ko lang ha--pero it affects on my  take to my financial life. pati pag iisip ko. feeling ko mas organisado ako. at less stress heheh

i can't let go of books too. i buy those that i like at alam kong will benefit me in the long run.  my books  are in the coffetable-serving two purpose: for visitor to read. and pang display hahaha
but for leisure reading, i hit the library lots and lots of times.
