so far we're very fortunate with our househelpers siguro the way you treat them kahit hindi malaki yung pasweldo

In my experience:

1. High pay
2. Good amo (mabait, understanding, di masyadong strict)
3. Foreigner amo
4. Good food
5. Lots of free time

Iyun ITEM 2, 4 & 5 ata applicable sa amin. LOL.
Pero I think BIG FACTOR iyun LOTS OF FREE TIME & NOT meticulous na amo. Kami kasi ni hubby, basta malinis iyun house and nakakapagluto on time, at nakakalaba weekly, ok na kami. Hahaha.

Demanding ng HH ngayon no. Kalokah. My gulay! As if naman kasi mataas ang increase ng sweldo natin taun taon.

for us, hindi applicable ang good pay. hehe. kasi i grew up with my lola. so we had a househelp before 1.5k lang yata yung pay pero all around na siya. she stayed with us for 6 years. although medyo madami work niya pero with minimal supervision because my lola was very passive. isang sabi din lang naman ng lola ko, sunod siya kaagad. and my lola rarely gets angry. when my auntie got married, she tried to pirate  yaya with a sweldo twice she gets from my lola, she refused. o ha! kasi daw napamahal na siya sa lola ko. awwww. para na daw niyang nanay yung lola ko at ako naman daw parang kapatid niya.

in fairness din when she stayed with us, single siya so sa parents lang nagpapadala ng pera. nag aadvance din siya paminsan minsan at napapahiram ng lola ko. she can laugh with us sa kitchen, makikipagkwentuhan, parang kabarkada lang. she eats with us sa dining table, pinapayagan mag day off, at laging kasama ng lola ko sa pagsisimba. naging closer tuloy siya kay God. hehe

she left us kasi my lola na rin told her to stay with my aunt when my aunt gave birth. she really needs a househelp. ayun, napilitan si ate maryjane. and then this stupid husband of my aunt, inaway away siya for some reason. ayun, napilitan na rin siya umalis at sumama sa pinsan niya. ngayon tagabantay na siya ng tindahan sa mayaman niyang amo. im happy naman for her.

good personality and attitude of the Amo

In my experience good pay talaga. And like everyone who works, good benefits. Usually when we are out of the country, may paid time off si yaya for how long we are gone. They also have their own snacks (crackers and juice just for them) and their own TV. Strict ako sa schedules nila. They have their own schedules everyday. Kung kelan maglalaba, what time magsasaing, what particular part of the house they clean for that certain day. It's good that they know their own schedules. Role ko is parang manager. Check them when I am at home and when Im busy with my business, they follow naman the orders i gave them the night before. Happy sila kasi they have one hour to go to the park everyday with my dog

May job description talaga. Yan kasi law ng mom ko  while we were growing up and its very effective for me.

treat them like they're family.  it's not necessary na chummy chummy ka sa kanila.  para hindi sila mahomesick.

and yeah, better pay. ;D

etong current yaya ko..lahat binigay ko.. ok naman sweldo 3k per month, with free toiletries na..bukod sa food to sawa siya sa kusina... binilhan ko pa ng chichirya as per her request, sinabi ko na kapag tumagal ng 6 months i can give her increase and pag tumagal ng one year balik pamasahe and will also give her vacation pero no pay pero free ticket. papunta at pabalik. pinahiram ko pa ng cellphone..binigyan pa ng inlaw ko ng P200 para pang gastos sa toiletries nya until she gets her sweldo pero kahit may binigay na kaming toiletries di ko na pinabawi yung pera.
all she needs to do sa amin ay take care of my baby during the day..wash my baby's clothes may washing machine and dryer kami..malakas ang tubig sa bahay at naka-connect na sa washing machine kaya no need na mag igib ng tubig sa poso.

..and yet after a week of taking care of my 11 month old baby girl ayaw na nya!!?? tulog lang ng tulog ang bata..hinde mahilig magpakarga si baby.. ilagay mo sya sa kama..bahala na sya mag entertain sa sarili nya.. basta bantayan lang sya na hinde mahulog.. and meron din walker..

I think parang typical corp employee din ang helpers. if the person has High Aptitude and Good Attitude. they will sooner or later leave and seek "greener pastures". kaya ako, when i encounter someone like them, lalo na kung fresh out of probinsya na high school level, pero parang college grad mag isip, inuunahan ko na sila. sasabihin ko na just let me know in advance kung kelan sila aalis and if possible if they can find someone na kapalit nila, better appreciated.

a good example of this was we had a house boy noon, na gustong umangat sa buhay. he would read the english dictionary every day. read newspapers (hihiramin sa amin), watch informative tv shows and news. then nung nakaipon na, he would take night courses. and he would often borrow my encyclopedias noon. para nga akong library eh. but we all knew what he was up to. nagpaalam naman ng mabuti. a few years later, while my mom was shopping in a department store, she heard someone calling her name. (mrs. xxx)
and my mom couldn't recognize him. and then he told his story. Manager na pala siya doon.

Meron din akong katulong noon na nakitaan ko ng magandang talent. i tested her and she was exceptional!!! as in. ang galing niya mang hilot. sobra. And i knew i couldn't let someone like her stay. and for Divine reasons, i let her go. Pinakilala ko siya sa mga mayayaman kong kaibigan. and now, isang massage lang niya sa foriegner eh 100 dollars na. and whenever we meet, i don't see her as a katulong but as a friend. maganda na nga mag suot. malayo sa pinanggalingan. considering she has 7 kids noon and money was very hard to come by. siya ngayon nagbibigay sa amin ng mga helpers namin. and dahil maganda ang naging buhay niya sa amin, yung mga rinereto niya eh magaganda din ang ugali kaya tumatagal. siyempre she has a name na din. hindi nya sisirain yung pangalan niya by recommending a not so good helper.

anyway, going back, siguro its best to find a helper that  is comfortable na with what you can give. helpers who see that they can grow with you and actually help their families grow. and of course sila, they will help your family grow too. they will see your kids as their own. and if they do. they will never hurt your kids and will even go out of their way in and in harms way to protect them.

syempre hindi tayo companya, yung iba mangangarap magtrabo sa company. kaya kahit gaano kabait kayo, aalis pa din sila. yung mga tumutulong sa amin na dating namamasukan sa amin, pero nasa malalaking companya, eh nagpapart time pa din sa amin. part timers get higher pay sa amin. but tasks nila is no ordinary task. minsan nga they do it for free as a gesture of gratitude. but i always see to it that they get something.

since wala na ako sa pilipinas, i still send balikbayan boxes of goodies to them and for their children. kahit nasa ibang lugar na sila etc. dumadating naman sila. in fact i heard na pag may free time daw sila,  they would often stop by and just have coffee with our current helpers. i've been doing this since i left. 1-2 boxes a year for them.

maaring hindi nga sila nagstay as in consistently for say 10 years. pero their "invisible help" is there. and that help has been consistent throughout the years.

ako noon, maraming nararamdamang sakit sa katawan as i used to train hardcore sa martial arts. upon letting go of our helper na magaling mag hilot. i suddenly became healthier and stronger. halos lahat ng ailments ko nawala. kaya i really believe that it is in helping others that we are help. since i gave way for others to be healed, i was healed. yung mga mayayaman, sosolohin ka pa nila. and she was offered to live in hawaii etc. pero this person kasi is spiritual, she saw her gift as a means to serve kaya she said no.

I've had bad helpers din and as usual amo ang masama. but sa akin lang. bakit yung iba bumabalik at nagpapasalamat? hindi lang nila ako naiintindihan. baka makitid ang isip nila.

*****

In general, we give what we can give.

I have been thinking about this question na din for 2 years already. I have had 7 helpers and I'm so frustrated na talaga.

It's definitely not the salary, I give them 2.5K-3K sa simula and I offer to increase their pay every 3 months (not one of them stayed for more than 6 months.) Lenient naman ako about cellphones, TV, food and cleanliness. They can also go on day off every Sunday.

My kid usually asks why they keep leaving. Medyo heartbreaking knowing na somehow it affects her too. She gets attached to them kasi. Sometimes, she even gives them a drawing na remembrance daw nya sa yaya pag paalis na, yung yaya naiiyak rin.

I think what makes them stay is maturity, not us, but them. Unfortunately, most of those with the maturity to hold on to actual jobs don't settle for being a maid or yaya. I'm really envious when I see others na super tagal na ng yaya nila. Swertihan lang naman talaga. Sana lang one of these swertihin din ako.

we have a helper na more than 10 years na nagwowork sa amin and yung salary niya is 4k+.

We have 10 helpers, most of them years narin nagsstay, we have a small business kasi and sila na rin yun bahala sa bahay. every day may 1 helper na naka appoint na gagawa ng chores the whole day (luto, hugas) and yun lang gagawin niya, exempted sa ibang jobs for that day. Sabado is market day, laba, and cleaning of the house. Pag gabi they get to watch tv with cable, they eat the same food as we do as many as they want. Tapos kung yung helper namin gusto kumuha ng cellphone, we buy it and have them pay it in gives. Pinapayagan umalis pag weekend para mag lakwatsa, and have them go to their hometown when vacation time comes depende kung ano gusto nila, kung holyweek gusto pero hindi sabay sabay uuwi. Usually yung mother ko tinatanong sila kung kailan nila gusto umuwi, usually new year, january, april, holy week. hindi sabay sabay kasi mapipilay ang business dito. Pero ang bakasyon nila is around 1-2weeks. :)

I agree with you. So many helpers these days don't take their jobs seriously. To many, especially the younger ones, it's just an adventure or they just want to go to a new place or meet new people. Sometimes they just want to earn enough to buy a new cellphone. Then when they get bored, they leave.

Ang tawag namin dito ay "malasakit".  Pag nakahanap ka ng helper na ganito, who is comfortable na with what you can give, they will more likely to stay longer.  Give them the right increase and benefits according to their performance, magiging masaya na sila.  Pag napansin ko sa first few months pa lang, gusto niya na ng increase, nawawalan na ako ng interest to give them the motivation they need (like pasalubong when I travel, free medical assistance, kasama pag gumala sa mall, etc.)

They can eat whatever we cook, free toilettries, we give them lotions and perfumes everytime may dumating na relative from abroad.  They can watch TV pag may free time.  Kapag may gusto silang gamit na bibilhin na medyo mahal, we buy it for them tapos 3-6 months to pay ang agreement. I must say, hindi kami gaanong strict.  Strict lang ako with these 2 rules- (bawal magpapasok ng bf or bisita nila sa loob ng bahay, most especially kapag wala kami AND bawal magpagabi, kung galing dayoff dapat nasa bahay na by 6pm).

I don't actually put so much efforts in making them stay.

i agree with this. napansin ko din na karamihan ng maid ngayon (based on my experience ha) na gusto lang nilang lumuwas ng maynila then pag ayaw na, magpapa-alam and they have this thinking na tutal madami naman ang naghahanap ng maid, they can quit anytime they want. balewala sa kanila ang trabaho.

i think, they will stay if they have their own room and pinaka-importante ay hindi sila pinagdadamutan ng food.

Very nice insight ito, sis.  How long na yung maids mo ngayon with you with this kind of benefits?

I have had great and not so great yaya/maids.  The longest lasted for 6 years, 3 years then some 2 years.  Pero, I've had din mga as short as overnight either they leave or I really fire them.  My long term maids I have made them finish their high school kahit working with us (night school, sometimes TESDA basta once a week).

Pero, now... I've had good to great or great to worse maids.  I want to give a fairly right pay and growth for them pero your ideas seem nice but I'll have to weigh din if worth it sila i-keep.

How long na mga maids mo sayo with your kind of benefits? Tumagal ba ng at least 3 years?
