Better ang mutual fund. I was able to research one where the minimum holdout to be free of charge is just 6mos. Plus they are investing in blue chip stocks which are performing really well in the stock market. Nagsisisi nga ako kasi I invested mine sa time deposit. This November pa lalabas. Whereas if I started investing in mutual fund, as of their latest NAVPS comparison, I could have easily earn 30% na.  :-\

It's basically the same thing as a time deposit. Pero with the company I researched, 5k lang [textspeak!] initial. Most time deposits I know is dapat malaki yung initial amount to be deposited. Ang difference as far as I know is kapag sa bank kasi, insured siya ng PDIC. With mutual funds, since it's a private company, hindi. So ibig sabihin, pag na-bankrupt ang company, you'll get nothing. Pero kaya nga ako nag-research about the company background (connected siya sa Metrobank yata) and about na din sa mga stocks where they invest (which are actually the stocks I really wanted to buy, can't afford nga lang. huhuhu).

Sorry for the haitus, my father-in-law-to-be died a week ago.  :'(

Here's the link sis: www.fami.com.ph

You may check out the performances of all the mutual funds in the Philippines as well in here:
http://www.pinoymoneytalk.com/1st-half-2010-mutual-funds-philippines/

If you would need additional info, I have a direct contact number to their Dept. Head. Just PM or send me an email.

Note: Am just trying to help. I am not related at all to anyone working in the company and do not get any percentage whatsoever for doing this. I just have a lot of questions that 's why I was referred to the Dept Head.

LBC bank in makati offers 7.75% for 5years. you have an option of getting the interest yearly or roll-over the interest with principal.

Minsan nakakatempt mag time deposit sa Thrift Banks, kaso nakakatakot din kasi ilan din yung mga nag bank holiday na. Goodluck sa pag claim sa PDIC.

Experienced going to PDIC twice, Banco Filipino and LBC Bank.
It was a relatively hassle free experience..
The only catch is, you need to go when you are scheduled..
Had to sacrifice my sleep since I was in the night shift but just
for that day and I got my check promptly thereafter.

Time deposit rates in rural banks now are, on average, around 6-9%, less withholding tax. If you are interested but apprehensive, especially with all the rural banks being placed under receivership, you can just stick to the top rural banks: http://www.banksphilippines.com/2012/12/top-rural-banks-in-philippines-2012-by.html. Andyan ang Bank of Makati and One Network Bank, which are my own picks.

Also conform to the P500,000 per depositor PDIC insurance coverage so you can sleep at night. I experienced claiming from PDIC, too, for a Bulacan-based cooperative bank. Unfortunately, my own experience wasn't as smooth, but that was because I admit that we also did some hocus-pocus on our part (we had to "borrow" other family members' names so the entire deposit would be insured.)

Aside from rural banks, you can also try cooperatives. Some can provide up to 12-15% a year, tax free pa. But do your due diligence on cooperatives -- better yet, become a member yourself so you are really immersed in it.

I have money in these investments myself, but this money is only intended for parking and producing extra monthly income. If your goal is growth and gains -- and you won't be needing that money for a while -- direcho ka na sa mutual funds and UITFs that have also been suggested here.
