Hi guys! I'm happy I saw this thread and find like-minded people Anyway, my daughter is just 3 but as early as now, I'm considering homeschooling her though i have few reservations about it. What I would like to know is do you know a secular homeschooling program in the Philippines? Coz I only come across Christian-based schools online. Thanks!

This is my dream, to homeschool my kid (who is still in my tummy right now). I'm already working from home so that's a big step towards that dream. Happy to see like-minded parents here in this thread.

I will homeschool my child for supplemental issues only. He still attends regular school for the purpose of socialization and interaction. . I've received a catalog from sonlight yun kasi yung nabasa ko dito sa thread. Problem is masyado atang marami yun mga core nila. I only need few subjects and electives kasi sa mga mommies na gumagamit nito how does it work ba? or if any other suggestions? websites and other homeschool references pa share naman. . thanks in advance..

There are many homeschooling options. Depende sa learning style ng kid and time that you have (even style how you organize things).  With Sonlight, everything has been laid out, hindi naman talaga marami pero age-appropriate.  Madami din ang regular schools na subject per year kaya mukhang madami kasi nakaka overwhelm talaga ang Sonlight Catalog (nakakaexcite kasi.. hehe).

Anyway, you can download a free 3-week Instructors Guide on their website which I did... youll notice, wala ka nang gagawin na planning kasi everything is laid out.  Nag plaplanning lang ako ng stuff to buy during weekends (ex. buy sa supermarket, or field trip).  Usual days, binubuksan ko lang yung IG (Instructors Guide, and follow whatever is written there). Our usual HS hours - 3-3.5 hours/day.

Other HS curriculum kasi... you are the one who will create pa your goals and IG which takes too much effort for moms.

Hi mga sis,

Im also homeschooling our son. Under CFA Reading Program. We started last October 2012... pero sinubukan ko lang kasi 2 years and 5 months old pa lang sya nun... tapos after a month nag stop kami kasi naging busy kami. We started the whole program nung last week ng January. January 28 ata yun... then as of today, nakakabasa na sya ng 2 to 3 letter word. Even small sentences and phrase. I'm so happy. Buti na lang di ako nag give up sa pag homeschool sa kanya. It feels great and iba yung sence of pride and fulfillment. ;-)

^really sis? my daughter is turning two this april. You think I can enroll her na sa CFA reading program when she turned 2? Or it's too early pa?

^ you assess your child's preparedness... actually the reading program is for 3 1/2 years old and above... parang equivalent sya ng nursery. Sa case nung son ko kaya namin naisipan syang bigyan ng reading program is because at 2 years old, he can read the alphabet (he can identify their names)... kaya we looked for other things to teach him na.

Nung una hirap pa ako na i-switch sya sa pagbasa ng alphabet using their sounds not names, but eventually na kuha nya rin yung principle ng pagbasa kaya ok na kami ngayon. Nasa lesson 24 na kami at madali na para sa kanya yung pag combine ng sounds. Tyagaan lang. Naisip ko rin dati na baka masyado pang maaga pero ngayon mukhang ok lang naman yung timing namin, kasi we are not in a hurry na turuan sya, we can always start all over again. At the same time, enjoy naman sya, and he's always looking forward to our daily lesson :-)

Won't homeschooling sacrifice the child's development in socialization? How to address such issue if you insist on homeschooling?

^ that is the usual impression of people on homeschooling. kahit ako ganito rin ang inisip ko before.

but when you homeschool, you still have your relatives and family friends to mingle with. with my son additional socialization is his soccer class or any other class we enroll him in. plus other kids we meet who are also homeschooled. mas malaki ang age range ng mga taong nakakasalamuha nya. we also meet people from running errands - grocery, bank, etc. when he gets a bit bigger, i will probably join a homeschool coop in our area.

napapansin ko rin sa mga homeschooled na bata na nakikilala ko, is that they treat grown-ups as they would treat their friends. pero hindi yung bastos na way ha. kasi since they are exposed only to the people that their parents like for them to model - wala pa naman ako narinig na bastos. they talk in a refined way.

i was very shy when i was a kid even to kids who are 1 year difference lang sa age ko. mas nasanay siguro ako sa ka-age ko. well, that's just from my experience.

sabi nga nila, you need quality friends - not quantity.

also, if you expose your kids to people you'd like for them to model, more than likely ang magiging ugali nila ganun din. di ba nga tell me who your friends are...

oh, and with today's bullying pa. i don't think that is a healthy socialization.

tiggerlily,  you're right about that. at least the child gets to interact with good and mature people. childhood trauma will also be averted this way.
