Ynazki and Marose - My 2year old also had her first cleaning and fluoride application kanina.

Since nagpa-crowning nga yung toddler ko, before they started nilinis muna thouroughly, sedated naman kasi yung bata. 2 months earlier noong una nila yun nilinisan di rin matagal. Pero yung sa 8yr old ko thourough kahit mas malinis yung teeth nya than my youngest.

Hi GT Moms,

It's been more than a year since my last post. I purposely did not visit the thread because of the bad and hurtful experience I had with another member.

Anyway, I am very happy to tell all of you that my son's year-old strip crowns are doing well. :)

I was able to find a pedia dentist who understood my concerns about "conscious sedation", and he agreed to do his treatment with oral sedation, as long as I do the "monitoring" myself.

I am a medical doctor, my mom is a medical doctor too. My lolo, and my uncles are doctors too. We studied all other alternatives that time, we consulted several anesthesiologist friends, and my mom and I both agreed not to have conscious sedation for a baby less than 24 months old.

My son was only 21 months old when I noticed ridges on his 4 front teeth. He was 24 months when the pedia dentist repaired his two front teeth. And he was 25 months when his 2 side teeth were repaired.

I am not trying to scare anybody about the after-effects of conscious sedation. It's just that from my research, conscious sedation is also a form of General Anesthesia. And the risks for babies less than 24 months old outweigh the benefits (in my case, and in my opinion).

Anyway, my baby did not have any trauma at all (as what most dentists fear would happen if I opt to have oral sedation). His "happy/non-traumatic" dental experience happened inspite of our "multiple" visits, and despite no sedation done on our 2nd procedure! I am really thankful that God led me to this wonderful pedia dentist.

I guess our 2-3 months "preparation" worked too. I've been reading him books about dentist visits (Dora, Berenstein Bears, Curious George, etc), and also watching cartoons with the same topics for several weeks prior to the procedure.

On the first procedure (2 front teeth), I gave him oral sedative and we monitored his O2 sat and pulse rate with a pulse oximeter. He only cried a bit when the procedure was almost over (around 30-40 minutes, if I remember it correctly).

The assistant "intern" was  just too slow in tying the strings for the rubber dam. It wasted a lot of "sedated" time, sayang! The pedia dentist decided not to use one anymore.

After a month, we did the 2nd procedure (2 side teeth), and this time, we did not even need a sedative anymore. My baby follows command really well. And this is one of the many reasons why I was confident to ask all the dentists we consulted if we can try oral sedation lang.

So my advice, follow your instincts! You know your baby the best. All of us only wants the best for our babies. Kaya nga tayo nandito sa GT to seek for answers, advice, recommendations, and learn more from other moms, right? Isn't that enough proof that we want only the best for our kids?

Don't give up in looking for a dentist whom you can trust 100%. The one who will truly listen to you, and not throw their weight around because they are "experts", and one that would not call you a "horrible" mother for wanting something different for your baby.

I consulted several dentists -- I think mga 5 pedia dentists ang pinuntahan ko, before I found THE ONE. And heavent-sent talaga sya! :)

Pangungunahan ko na ang iba sa tabi-tabi, I am not saying one should avoid conscious sedation at all cost. Because every case is different -- the age, the severity of the problem, the level of child'd cooperation, his/her temperament, attention span, etc.

In the end, it will still be a case to case basis. In my case, I followed what I think is the best for my baby, and I have no regrets.

Again, you know your baby the best, and you know what's best for him/her (sometimes, much more than what the "experts" tell you).

@twelvth_goddess

Ganun din lang kami kabilis sis, pero gumamit naman ng mga tools yung dentist, like yung "small spoon" (yan yung pagkakadescribe niya sa baby ko nung ginagamit niya) and un parang electric toothbrush. Then saka nilagay yung fluoride.

he had accident kasi last dec 2012, and his teeth got chipped off until after a few weeks, it became graying na in color...

it was really unpleasant to loom at....that is why i decided to look for a pedia dentist...

we went to abesamis at festival alabang at first, but she said that we dont have any choice but to extract it...

ayoko naman...kuwawawa because he is only 3 years old....

so we lookedfor another option....

then we went to Dra Georgia Remulla...and i was satisfied with her suggestion...

so we followed it....my son had baby root canal surgery and some tooth were placed with crowns...

super ganda na ng teeth ng anak...ang galing galing niya.....super!!!!

My son is 5 years old and has at least 2 teeth that requires filling. Our pedia recommends that we go to a pedia dentist that provides sedation for fillings as my son is very makulit.

Anyway, sorry if I didn't backread, does anybody know of pedia dentists that are accredited by HMO, offers sedation and does an efficient filling for kids? yung hindi po nagmamadali sa client para lang makarami.

thanks in advance

I highly recommend Dr. Eric Hernandez for your toddler's FIRST dental appointment. we went to him for my daughter's 1st dental appointment, and he's worth it. his clinic at that time was in medical towers across makati med. His clinic has a small playground filled with toys and story books in the waiting area, and in the private room there is a TV in the ceiling so that the kids can watch spongebob while lying down. he asks if first time ng bata. My daughter then was like 2 or 3 yo. what he did was magkaharap kami ni doc, seated facing each other, then baby will lie down with her head on doc's lap and her legs naman on my lap. my daughter enjoyed it so much, she kept asking for another dental appointment. but he is also expensive for me, its like i paid almost 2K for that visit which only included cleaning with flouride. i wanted to treat my daughter's rotten teeth caused by bottle feeding, however i have no budget for a major operation like that, and im not too keen on putting my daughter to sleep thorugh sedation just because of rotten teeth, considering her age. We only went to him ONCE, but for me a child’s FIRST dental visit is very important. Sino bang bata ang hindi matatakot pag nakakita ng doctor, total stranger na nakamask, may ilaw sa noo, at maraming pointed instruments na pinapasok sa bibig nya? Parang twilight experience ata sa bata yun.
While my now 6-year old daughter has a different dentist already (less pricy), I credit to Doc. Eric that  my daughter never gets afraid of dentists (daig pa ako) and looks forward to every dental visit, regardless whose dentist. Her succeeding dentists nga always commends her good behavior in the clinic, very "brave" daw and hindi fussy. After Doc Eric I just bring her to a regular dentist for cleaning.

Finally, my youngest finished his pasta na. We started our appointments with Doc. Jay (Tooth Fairy) last July, come August and September namin natapos lahat. First time ng youngest ko sa clinic niya, we came with 4 front teeth with cavities. Then meron pa pala siya 2 sa bagang then 4 front teeth and then 2 sa likod. Sa 2nd visit ko nagamit maxicare card for the consultation then the rest I paid 8 pasta with flouride for 500 each. Naka 3 sessions kami. Finally restored na lahat. I'm so happy. Ang taas ng tolerance ng 3 years old ko sa pain, nakahiga lang siya and wala lang kaya nagawa lahat ng pasta in less than 30 minutes palagi. :) Now it's my 2 other kids turn naman...
