i have a 19 month old baby, and i'm worried dahil kelangan sya i-sedate  to treat her teeth, yung upper fronth teeth nya, parang natanggal na yung enamel, sabi ng dentist naka-expose na daw yung dentin.

hi pinkypop_30, dr jasper was the one who checked my baby's teeth. he was patient in answering my questions. he looks young. since sa PDCP kami nagpunta I believe may training sya for pediatric dentistry

anyone here, whose baby underwent sedation to fix their baby's teeth.. we need feedback to at least lessen our worries..since nung nag-check up kami last saturday, worried na worried na talaga ako, ayoko naman na pabayaan na lang yung teeth ng baby ko, kase mag-to-two pa lang sya and malamang masira na yung ngipin nya ng maaga...

Hi sis, candidate before yung son ko for sedation pero di ko pinagawa kasi he's too young to undergo the said procedure and AYOKO talaga.  so I looked for other options, until I met Dr. Jay of Tooth Fairy.

So far so good, na prevent ang mga teeth niya na pasira na plus yung dating tooth na candidate for extraction, he just let it be removed on its own. Ergo, bungi siya. Mas okay naman sakin un than seeing my child under sedation. Tutal ganun din naman, tatangalin din naman tooth niya, so I just went to the natural process of tooth removal.

But this is my choice sis ah, its up to you pa din. And of course mag kaka iba naman cases ng teeth ng mga babies namin. By the way, he was 2 lang din at that time.

You know what, I really appreciate your generosity in sharing your knowledge about dentistry... But your last statement is really very offensive, and very judgmental.

It's your child who's getting treated---siya ang pinakamahihirapan sa gusto mong mangyari---hindi ikaw. Too bad he doesn't have a choice for now.

It seems as if you are saying that I am a horrible mother for wanting my child to undergo such "trauma" since hindi naman ako ang mahihirapan. I am not the one in my baby's shoes kaya sige lang, go ahead, and do what I want?! And poor baby, he doesn't have a choice.... such a horrific mother, ain't I?

Have you ever put yourself in MY shoes? Ikaw ba ang mahihirapan if my child ends up with learning disability because of GA? I don't know if you are a mom, but if you are, you would know that 99% of moms want only the best for their kids.

Don't you think I am weighing every pros and cons here? For me, it would be less of a burden if he gets trauma from several dental visits than suffer from life-long learning disability....

Now if those journals did not show those learning disability risks, do you think I would even think twice? Sino bang nanay ang may gustong nakikitang nasasaktan ang anak nya? If you can assure me that 100% guaranteed safe ang Ketamine, sa tingin mo ba mag-dadalawang isip pa ako?

Even the pediatric dentist in the US who I consulted online and who has a legitimate website acknowledged my concerns about ketamine. Several moms and parents have posted the same concerns about the recently released journal and he said .... they are going to state their position very soon. They are walking in a tight rope, they are very careful...

TOO BAD walang effective malpractice suit sa Pilipinas, and just in case I followed their advice to have GA, and my baby developed disabilities, I can't sue those dentists who prescribed the BEST!

I think it is my right as the mother of the patient to decide what's best for him now, since he has no capacity to do that for himself as of the moment... And no, hindi kawawa ang baby ko for having me as his mom.

I've seen children get treated with and without sedation. Meron din namang cases where sedation is not a must at meron talagang necessity ang sedation. In cases where sedation (NOT GA) is warranted and the parent or the pediatrician refuses to give clearance (even if walang medical contraindications to sedation) kitang kita namin na ang pinaka-nahihirapan ay yung bata. I cannot put into words the suffering of the child and the agitation of the parents while they see the child wailing and struggling inside the papoose board while 2 people are trying to keep him still.

As a practitioner, you have to weigh the pros and cons of sedation. Chances are, with rampant caries and lots of dental problems that needs to be addressed in a patient, mas malaki ang benefits if sedation will be used.

You mentioned ketamine--have you asked any dentist you've consulted for alternative agents? Akala ko ba e conscious sedation ang sinabi ng dentist as you said in you post here:

All suggest pulpectomy and crowning under conscious sedation.

The most common anti-anxiety sedatives used for IV sedation are midazolam (or another benzodiazepine) and propofol--NOT KETAMINE. Also, I reviewed your previous post, you only asked about sedation--ni hindi mo nga minention ang general anesthesia. Had you mentioned that you were looking for alternatives for GA, then that'll be a different story.

As I've said, NGAYON mo lang sinabi na GA pala ang gustong gawin sa anak mo. While it's but natural to lean towards US pediatric dentists, siguro naman mas may bearing yung mga sinabi ng mga pediatric dental practitioners na nakakita mismo sa anak mo. Again, if they deem that conscious sedation (NOT GA as you are now insinuating) is the best way to treat your child effectively then that's the way to go.

Hi sis tinmuning, just like to ask about oral sedation, wala ba talaga maaalala yung bata about sa procedure na gagawin??? my daughter is a special child and her pedia dentist is Dr. Fenella Galvan. Nag undergo siya ng procedure with oral sedation year 2009... Dr. Galvan, assures me that my daughter wala syang maaalala and since under sedation so makakatulog siya... yun ang explanation niya but the thing is nung ginagawa na nila yung procedure my daughter is keep pulling away Dra's hand and nilagyan na sya ng strap still nakawala pa din hands ng anak ko and two assistant ang kailangan para pigilan siya. After ng procedure, yes tulog ang anak ko pero when i told her that we need to visit the clinic again pumayag lang because i assure her that ibabrush and lalagyan lang ng vitamins ang teeth nya and dinedemonstrate sya sa akin yung ginawa sa kanya dun sa procedure... and believe me ayaw nila maniwala na naaalala nya... she was supposed to undergo another procedure last year but i hesitated kasi under oral sedation na naman and they need to extract 4 teeth... now, kailangan na naman bumalik sa clinic and for sure may procedure na namang gagawin but i'm a bit hesitant with oral sedation or even under going GA... thanks!

^Let me emphasize that general anesthesia is not routinely done in dental practice, especially in pediatric patients---pwera na lang kung major operation ang gagawin.

Ideally, walang maaalala ang bata sa procedure done with oral sedation, same goes for other forms of conscious sedation like IM/IV sedation. As to what happened to your child, medyo unusual yung mangailangan pa ng restraint (aside from the papoose board aka strap). Madaming possibilities as to why that happened but of course, I cannot comment since I did not personally saw the procedure.

I know Dr. Galban and I can assure you that she knows what she's doing. Siguro nagkataon lang or baka nasa anesthesiologist ang factor as to why the child can still break from the restraints. Maaring hindi kaagad nagmetabolize yung drug early enough kaya nakakapalag pa rin yung anak mo by the time the treatment was started. Or baka mas appropriate sa kanya ang other forms of sedation. Unfortunately, this unpleasant scenario caused the child to be apprehensive towards dental treatment.

Siguro kailangan ng anak mo ng change in dental environment on her next dental visit. She might associate the unpleasant scenario about the previous dental treatment with that particular clinic. Or you can talk to Dr. Galban about what happened and ask if anong alternatives pwede since you can't risk subjecting your child to another traumatic procedure or else mahihirapan ka na pabalikin sa dentista yung anak mo.

^ sis tinmuning, when the sedation is starting to take effect na saka pa lang nila ginawa yung pag x-ray sa teeth so they trying to wake her up and it took 15 minutes kasi nakatatlong ulit bago nakuha ng tama yung xray so parang dun pa lang medyo stress na siya and after the procedure nga pala naupo pa siya sa chair while crying kaya naawa kami ng daddy niya. nakatulog lang siya nung nilabas na siya ng clinic ng dad niya.

sis, ako ang nagrequest ng GA sana kasi extraction of 4 teeth plus two more procedures pa yung kailangan gawin so feeling ko kung sedation lang baka hindi kayanin although i trust doktora, ayoko naman maulit yung nangyari before but after talking to my husband we decided not to push through with the procedure...

what is the minimum/max time before the oral sedation take effect? thanks again

My 2 year old boy is sira ang 4 front teeth and my hole dun sa 2 sa loob.
according to the dentist, my hypermineralization daw and weak talaga yung teeth niya.
nagbu-brush kami ng teeth niya
and he doesnt eat sweets pa ng lagay na yan.

Ano ba immediate relief for toothache sa bata? Kawawa naman yung daughter ko, 4 yrs old. Sobrang sira na yung ngipin nya. 3 days na sumasakit, sobrang maga na nga yung pisngi nya. We went at perfect teeth sa sm sucat. They did a panoramic xray and cleaning. 2650php na agad yun. Huhu! Di naman natanggal yung sakit. Ano ba pwede gawin? Im giving her mefenamic and antibiotic right now na reseta ng dentist pero saglit lang ang effect.

My daughter had teeth cleaning/fluoride treatment a week ago and thank God she's still cavity free after a year of not going to the dentist. We missed several appointments for her half year check up. I think it helped that she is very diligent in brushing her teeth plus she rarely eats sweets and she never drinks soda.

My 18mo old had his first checkup too. The dentist only got to check it since my son was resisting very hard (they even did the knee to knee hold...my son's head was on the dentist's lap while his torso was resting on yaya's). He's cavity free too. Now my concern is the dentist suggested to delay his cleaning and fluoride treatment when he turns 2. Para daw di ma-trauma. Is that alright doc tinmuning? What can we do so that his teeth will still be in good condition after 6mos (well, aside from regular teeth brushing).

naka schedule daughter ko kay dra. claudette raymundo sa tooth kingdom sa june 17 before mag pasukan, actually second visit na namin to sa kanya, nagustuhan kasi ng dau ko and super satisfied ako sa service niya, yung unang visit namin is 2 yo dau ko ngayon naman mag 3 na sya. 650 cleaning niya, then 1250 cleaning with flouride. btw, sun and tue lang ang schedule niya and usually sa hapon lang siya.

my 2 year-old underwent oral rehabilitation under conscious sedation last Friday in Medical Center Imus. it was handled by dr. ryan de guzman, a pediatric dentist.

the procedure lasted for about 2 hours and in the afternoon of the same day, my son was back on his feet agad, parang wala lang nangyari. he was eating normally and playing too. the anesthesia wore off fast i guess.

i saw the need for sedation because my son is really uncooperative kahit check-up pa lang. eh ayaw ko naman magkaroon siya ng infection because of tooth decay. his 4 front teeth were extracted, some repairs were done sa remaining milk teeth niya.

dr. de guzman was patient in answering my queries coz i was really hesitant at first. but he was very good in explaining the possible diseases related to tooth decay kaya naconvince ako to do the treatment. medyo costly lang talaga. kaya parang OC na ako sa teetng anak ko ngayon. tama na yung minsang sedation.
