Hello Ladies and Bros,

Just a disclaimer that I am NOT single. I'm happily married and will be getting married again soon (religious ceremony 2nd wedding). However, I thought I'd share my experience and thoughts here. I was single for a LONG time before I met the one. And while I was single, I was actively dating for many years -- as in twice a week, I'd meet a new guy. I thought I was wasting my time and effort -- for many years I was going on random dates with 1-2 guys a week. Out of those, siguro a handful lang ang may second, third or fourth date. I prayed, I asked God to send me the one. But then I realized that prayer is a spiritual act of speaking to God, not intended to be a wish-list request to God. I believe that it takes human effort, and to a degree, LUCK, to achieve finding a mate/partner. If you look at humanity and civilization and evolution, I don't believe humans are DESTINED to be alone. Humans, like most MAMMALS in the animal kingdom, SURVIVE better when they have a partner. Life is just more achievable with a partner, whether it's in the modern sense of LIFE or the pre-civilization sense when humans were still hunters and gatherers and men did something while women did something else.

So based on this idea, I re-assessed my goals and figured out what I really wanted -- the CORE qualities I want in a man (my non-negotiables) and my good-to-haves in a man. I also assessed my environment -- what is the dating landscape of the city i live in: how many women am I competing against in the dating pool; what are the traits of these women -- from physical attractiveness, educational background, career situation/success, family/life values, etc. Then I compared myself to that. In terms of all that as a combination, I'd say I was faring slightly above the median --
let's say a 60% score, when compared to the entire dating pool. So from that, I assessed the TOP GUYS won't go after me, they'd likely go after the top ladies too. I found where I was PLACED in the market, and who should my target guy be (meaning gusto ko sila and gusto din nila ako -- my profile is their top choice, and their profile is my top choice) and after I accepted this, I finally went on a date with a guy who fits the profile of my ideal match. That was my first date after a PRAGMATIC and PRACTICAL approach to dating using data. And by data, I don't even mean I used some business intelligence or analytics to assess this. I just assessed the cultural landscape and dating pool of my city, and I acted accordingly. First try after that, I hit a success. While my single gfs who were pa-demure, pakipot, dream-y standards, and focused on praying, hoping, wishing, waiting.. wala pa rin. It doesn't mean WALANG standards na dapat pag single and waiting. It just means, REALITY CHECK. Standards go BOTH ways and increase/decrease in demand based on market supply. A highly educated guy from a wealthy family is HIGHLY unlikely going to date someone who graduated from an average school, from an average family. Hindi ibig sabihin masama or lesser yung second, it just means si guy ay mas-relatable to another woman who has the same background or situation as himself --- because they have a lot of things in common and probably same life aspirations. Very rare yung cinderella, knight in shining armor peg, so my point is stop wasting time waiting for Mr. Right. Find out what the traits of YOUR MR. RIGHT should be, and find him.

Hindi ako naniniwala sa dasal dasal lang yan. Or that Prince Charming will come like a knight in shining armor. It DOES happen but often times it is the EXCEPTION and not the norm. Let me try to elaborate a little, and this is a matter of observation without trying to sound snooty or offend anyone. What is my non-negotiable? One example is education and good job. Kailangan may professional job sya and well-educated. Why? Because I offer the same and in my world where I revolve in, that's the norm. I can't date a guy who is less educated (HS graduate) -- wala kaming common traits -- so eliminated na yun sa target ko. I can't date an auto mechanic or a labor worker. I live in the US by the way and those jobs earn good money. An entry-level corporate job probably starts at $50 to 60k/year fresh out of college. While a construction worker likely starts earning 90k/year immediately and most of them earn over 100k/year (I'm giving rough estimates, just to get my point across). But I won't date a labor construction worker. Cute, mabait and maayos sila and have stable incomes, and stable lives. Nothing against one. Pero why not? Hindi kame talo. At the end of the day, we have nothing in common and nothing to talk about. Hindi same educational attainment, travel aspirations, or personal ambitions, etc.  So hindi ako magiging happy.

Some would say eh bakit yung mga may sugar daddy? Eh kasi nga talo sila -- aligned yung hinahanp nila. The sugar daddy wants a young, beautiful woman and the sugar baby wants a rich person --- they don't care about the other stuff. So end of the day, swak, match sila. Kaso usually temporary yan kasi si sugar baby, tatanda, si sugard daddy, baka yayaman pa and hahanap ng new sugar baby. Sa akin, Partner ang hanap ko. Someone I can talk to, relate with, dream with, cry with, work hard with, etc. etc.

Using data, think of it this way: You are a single lady, and the market has ONLY five single men.  So, you have your pick of the entire market -- who would you choose? You'd choose the best of them all, leaving the remaining 4 without a partner, since you have the upper hand. The best of them all is the combined score of physical attractiveness, financial stability and career stability, personal characteristics, educational background, etc based on your preferences. But now change the situation to THE REAL MARKET. The market has about 50 men and 50 women. Of those 50 men, only ten men fit the profile I wanted. Of those TEN MEN, only five wanted a woman LIKE ME, so now I only have a pool of FIVE. Now where can I find those five men? They are likely middle managers in their careers, living in XYZ areas in my city, hang out at ABC types of places, or have friends who do 123 activities. Once I figured that out, I went to my target and BOOM, I MET the man I wanted and got married. Instantly. In fact, I found three/four and had to break the hearts of the other guys.

Now of course, we don't have REAL data. But we have logic and common sense. And using that, identify and target the man you want, the rest is up to LUCK. So that's when you PRAY that luck is on your side.

Btw, there was a Netflix documentary about this. Di ko ma-alala title. But it was NOT about dating acutely, but about data. The example they used though was dating algorithms in the US and how the dating pool works. They also talked about why online matched couples have a LOWER divorce rate than those who met without data because at the end of the day, relationships are about compatibility and alignment.

Use your brain ladies and bros. Get ahead of the curve.

I agree with this one! 👌🏻 I just wanna ask, can you suggest ways of how to meet yung ?target market? mo? Btw, I live sa US din, I tried online dating pero medyo no luck on that one too though it certainly did give me an opportunity to meet people.

Ako naman di ako na niniwala sa:

-Destiny
-love at first sight
-signs (hihingi ka ng sign kung right guy ba or sya na ba talaga ang the one mo or hindi)

@lalee888 based on my experience agree ako sa ibang na mention mo. Ako pinili ko un taong alam ko in a long run makakatagal ko kasama dahil pareho kami. Same wave length kami hindi lang dahil mahal ko sya. Iba din thinking ko di ako nagfofocus lang sa feelings and emotions ko para sa tao. Though most people naman they choose their partner because they love the person kahit ano pa status/ugali ni partner. Meron pa nga na basta mahal nya kahit feel nya di sya masyadong mahal ok lang.

Kaya ako ilang years na pagoobserved ko sa ex ko during our relationship alam ko in the end hindi ako magiging masaya. May mga point of views sya sa buhay na hindi ko gusto at alam ko di ko matatagalan after couple of years.

Based on my experience, dumating nga ang hubby ko the moment when I wasn't searching and least expecting. The moment -- kasi I was actively searching. Pero experience ko lang yun. But I put myself out there din naman.

Sa personality ko, I listed the qualities that I want in a lifepartner including essentials (e.g., religion, family values etc) and non-essentials (e.g., university where he graduated, college courses, height, birth order etc.). Syempre kailangan attracted ako physically. And then I prayed for it and asked God to please give me that man, otherwise I'll take it a sign that I'm for single blessedness.
Di naman ako takot maging single forever, kesa naman pahirap yung magiging asawa ko.

So until today, after 8 years of marriage, I'm still amazed at God na binigay at least 90% ng nasa listahan ko. Yep, including the university where he graduated (5 options ko), course (4 options ko), height, at birth order.

I met him pala sa isang catholic dating site. Nawala na nga yun sa isip ko eh. We're both based here in Philippines. Anyway, nung single ako, mahirap for me to meet different people, partida dalawa na organizations ko nun.

I will just share these 4 mottos which I held onto. Nalimutan ko na yung iba.

1. Know thyself.
Kailangan ito para ma-identify mo ang importante sa iyo sa isang life partner.
2. People don't get what they want, because they don't know what they want. In dating context, if you don't know what you want, kung sino na lang yung dumating, who make you feel special and important, na kung saan ay magagaling ang mga narcs...
3. Be Ms. Right while waiting/looking for Mr. Right. Who is Mr. Right? Refer to #1.
4. Huwag kukuha ng bato, na ipupukpok sa ulo (related to #2)

And huwag ring mag-pa-pressure o matakot maging single forever. Kung meron, meron. Kung wala, wala. Sobrang problematic kapag may matinding issues ang naging asawa mo. I agree na based on scientific research, mas mahaba nga buhay ng may asawa. Pero pag daming issues ng asawa mo, depressive symptoms din ang labas mo, na nakakaikli rin ng buhay. Dun na ako sa single and fulfilled kung walang lalakeng pasok sa standards ko.

Hi Sis @itsmeangel

I want to echo what sis @shadow angel and @glamorosa_09 both have said since they both raised very good points.

I, too, was not afraid of being single. I always thought to myself I?d rather be single than be with the wrong man. Our sis already explained this. And I think to a degree, this is critical because it translates to how you carry yourself. When you know what you want, you are CONFIDENT (not arrogant ha) and confidence is an appealing trait that both men and women want from the other. Confidence is sexy and is attractive to  both genders. Plus I felt like I had nothing to lose in dating since I was okay with the alternative anyway.

And as said also previously, we KNEW what we wanted. Magka-iba lang kame ng approach ni sis @shadow angel. My approach was not listing down what I wanted, but rather listing down what I did not want/could not live with (my non-negotiables) first. For example, I knew I had to raise my future children as Catholics and that I would need my hubby to practice what I preach. So marrying in my faith and practicing whole heartedly is critical to me. It did not ELIMINATE non-Catholics, but it was important for me to find someone who may be agnostic but respects my beliefs/etc. My non-negs included educational background, and cultural diversity (being open-minded) ? because that?s my norm, and what I can relate to, and it broadly means we have similar life goals/aspirations (to travel, to raise kids who are traveled and cultured, etc).

Next, I narrowed down my criteria by adding my preferences and my variables. Preferences, in my view, are my DESIRABLES. These are things na SANA meron, pero kung wala, I can live with it lalo na if WINNING naman si guy in other aspects. For example, I prefer a guy who is at least 5?11? in height or is taller than me.. but what if I meet someone who is only 5?4? -- it is not desirable pero kung exceeding naman sya sa ibang qualities, I?d be open to him! Wala naman kasing PERFECT diba? For my preferences, it was more on measurable tangibles (not literally) like physical attributes and career direction/prospects. Why career? Well, a doctor is great but they work crazy long hours, and have erratic schedules - not my ideal lifestyle!! But for the right person, I?ll adjust. Further, it also kind of alludes to the future. A guy who knows what they want career wise, tend to also know what they want relationship and future wise. Variables, in my view, are things that change over time. Preferences tend to also change over time so I grouped them together. But I added variables like family-oriented-ness. In my view, life is like seasons (Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter) - a guy who is not family-focused right now, could be so in the next season when the timing is right. So I needed our timing to be ALIGNED or at least I know will be geared in that direction. It is a variable, because it is almost impossible to expect that the guy we meet will instantly know they want to marry you immediately, but it is only fair to know he desires that in his life.

Finally, where do I find this guy?? Strategy sis. Alamin mo san makikita ang mga guys that fit your criteria, and go to those places. Don?t be afraid to put yourself out there and try different things. It also depends on what point in your life you are in. If you are 21 y/o and not looking for this direction yet, then there?s no need to focus on this kind of guy. Kasi diba If a guy is 31 and wants to get married and have kids in the near future, and the 21 year old wants to enjoy clubbing and singlehood and traveling and not marry soon - hindi aligned diba, hindi sila mag work-out? So for me, I was at a point in my life na alam ko na ang next step ko. There are tell-tale signs where to find this guy. A guy who wants the same future as I do is MOST LIKELY, already invested in a home (home-owner) or saving up for one (so they are practical and are living with their parents/family instead of renting). MOST LIKELY go to Church, MOST LIKELY have focused hobbies ? hindi hang out sa bar after work ang trip. They have hobbies like, they join car clubs (car enthusiasts), game clubs (game board enthusiasts, etc), join sports events (sport-interest enthusiasts). Why? I find that men who are focused on career/future also prefer to have a side passion/hobby. Yung guys na ?happy hour? lang palagi after work, I find them more?too chill about life/aimless. That?s not always true, but the LIKELIHOOD of it is higher. So I focused on those areas where I fill find this type of guy? for example, a certain zip code where homes are mostly OWNED and not RENTED (it increased my exposure to the right guy to be where they are instead of aimlessly wandering without a direction).

But oddly enough, I met my husband at a restaurant that was casual and catered to the weekend crowd - very random but targeted still! The restaurant was known as drawing customers from neighboring towns and visitors. So I brought some friends there and bingo I met my husband. Our meeting and dating was so organic because we were so aligned. It was easy because I already know what I wanted at that point.

Sis, sorry ang haba nito pero sobrang gusto ko talaga may ma-meet na ang mga single sisters natin na looking. Naulit ko rin yung points ko before na mahaba rin. But I have to explain kasi HOW I concluded where to find my match. I avoided places and guys na alam kong hindi ko match or walang market ng match ko.

Yung mga friends ko na 'waiting for God for a miracle' pero work-bahay work-bahay lang sila or out with the same group of friends? eh hello? Anong mangyayari dun? Ayun mga single pa rin, five years later?

And tama din pala yung Be Miss Right. Kaya nga match diba? Miss RIGHT for HIM also. Hindi ako nag-achieve ng guy na over-achiever kasi alam ko maghahanap sya ng partner na ganun din, or ng opposite naman na aalagaan nya.. bihira yung "alaga" unless may kapalit (super sexy/ganda si girl). Sa panahon ngayon, love is there, but you love someone because they are loveable, not because you are BLIND to their flaws.

Maganda nga rin religion based dating sites... Lalo na sa mga religious... Kung preferred ang catholic, you can search sa google, marami-rami na rin...

Anyways, ours is Catholic Match. Pero sa totoo lang hindi kami active dito, hindi nga kami paid member (pareho kami kuripot). Hubby only signed up for the free personality quiz. And then during his birthday, CM emailed the profiles of people near him, and then dun nya nakita profile ko. He googled my first name, my course, and PRC result (I indicated my work or course yata)... And then upon getting my full name and googling it, voila! My Friendster! He can't message me kasi nga hindi kami paid pareho... Kahit hindi kami nagbayad, sobrang thankful ako sa kanila...

To concur with sis lalee, yung isa ko pang motto ay nasa Diyos ang awa nasa tao ang gawa. It won't happen din naman if I didn't sign up.

Bigla kong naisip yung kaibigan ko na nagsabing she's getting afraid and lonely na... I just said **hugs** wala naman akong ibang masabi. Ang dating game (including online) sa nababasa ko, medyo tiring din yata... Ito yung isang nakikita kong challenge, unless adventurous and live-in-the-moment ang personality. Kung may energy ka to look for that someone, go go go... kung napapagod ka na... if you want you can rest... and get back on the game. Until when? Sa US naman kahit mga nasa 50's go lang... here sa Pinas, I don't know about that... pwede with foreigners...

There's a forum on REDDIT called on online dating but it was for a specific site - r/okcupid is the forum i think...and in the forum they critique dating profiles. So posters would post a screen shot or link of their dating profiles to get opinions/help from the community.

Nakaka-conscious for someone like me, but those people who do it (a lot of them) are really serious and it's very helpful. Those who post a screenshot, they blur their faces for privacy but keep the rest of the picture visible para nga makakuha ng feedback. They also hide their names/screen names for privacy.

@labyu -- maybe you can share more details about your profile para maka-help kame. Ano bang klaseng pictures post mo.

Dating sites:

Never tried this when i was still single but i know people who've used it here in the US, with success:
Christianmingle.com (or something like that)

Other dating sites where my friends have had success:

eharmony
match.com
chemistry.com (yata)

Caveat is that the people I know who were successful in dating, all paid or had a free full-trial.. someone explained to me na.. you can get lucky trying for free, but yung nag-pay you know they are seriously looking and that alone helps you filter out how serious a person is about finding a mate.

I, personally, tried Bumble and OkCupid. I enjoyed bumble a lot because it fit my active lifestyle and i met a ton of great people there, BUT it was also very "looks-based" so pag meet in person, di pala kame same ng gusto, or di click so i felt i was wasting my time (seriously) but enjoying me time (for fun/entertainment/excuse to go on a date)

That was a few years ago though, before I met my now-husband. Btw, yung hubby ko he also tried OD before he met me sabi nya.

^e-harmony and match are paid sites. If someone's paying then they are serious about finding their mates. However, they also don't delete deactivated profiles to make it appear that there are lots of members. So limited din ang choice. Our former receptionist met her now husband in e-harmony. But that's not as rosy at everyone think. She needed someone to take care of her because she can't. She was even telling us that she's not really into him but she had to settle but nothing better came along.  But she's empty up there so I am not surprised...lol! I just feel sorry for the guy because she's only up for his money.

^sad naman nun sis :(

it is what it is, even in thy physical world (not online) we all can meet people who have ulterior motives.. hindi maganda ang hangarin.. hindi lang sa online world.. i think it's both draw of luck, and pag-gamit sa utak hindi lang sa desires at puso...

kahit saan may masama, i really believe that.

^It is sad. But she's been divorced twice, this is her 3rd marriage. Tinalakan ko nga yun at nag-away kami kasi ang tamad tapos feeling ang daming ginagawa. In life, we get what we deserve sometimes. Her lifestyle doesn't fit her salary and without that much skill in her 50s, she probably think that it's her only way out. I hope I don't have to be like that. I mean, I want to be with someone that I really want to be with. I would rather stay single than to settle.

Agree with sis lalee :)

Naniniwala pa rin ako sa funnel principle. The more people you meet, the more chances of winning lols.

agree with lalee din and all the others who gave wonderful advice. and this! this is what i always tell my single friend din, who whines all the time about being single but refuses to do anything about it.

in my case, i met the love of my life when i wasn't looking for a serious relationship. but like what the others mentioned, at the time, i knew exactly what i wanted already. i didn't make a list or anything like that. but i've learned from past mistakes and i want to say, i knew myself well enough to know what my non-negotiables are.

i think someone mentioned that thing about goals being aligned and i couldn't agree more with that. i had a really nice bf before and he was perfect but ultimately, we wanted different things out of life. he wanted children and i don't. so we had to break up. it's very important to be in the same place with the other person and to want the same things.

LABYU: have you tried bumble? if i'm not mistaken, with that app, the women control the conversation. women are the ones supposed to initiate the chat. i'm just thinking that if you are afraid of rejection, you can at least alleviate the fear by knowing that you're the one who has to make the first move.

agree with what you said, though-- if it's such a long profile description, it's a bit of a turn off. it might seem a little needy, i guess? as for photos, people want to see how you really look like. think of it this way- it's better for people to be pleasantly surprised when they see you than to be disappointed. add a full body pic and maybe a pic where you look made up a little.
