@sis mooncake: talaga?! caregiver na under the table? meron pala nun? i thought mahigpit ang western countries pagdating sa mga caregivers  ???

merong law nga sis na sinusunod when it comes sa caregivers, naka saad yun sa work permit, which is you should work lang dapat sa given na employer yung nag sponsor sayo, kaso naman lam mo na mga kapwa natin pinoy, they want to work extra naman, kaya they do part time sa iba, so under the table talaga labas nun, yung iba naman kasi di mo din naman masisi, sa tindi ng needs regarding money matters plus yung weekends are offs so instead na mag stay sa bahay or gumala, they prefer to work nalang for added income

ano work mo
ano car mo
san ka nakatira
kelan ka huling umuwi sa pinas

maraming mayayabang na pinoy dito (not all naman, pero marami!) at uso rin ang crab mentality.

kaya when i see a kapwa pinoy randomly in groceries, malls or streets, iniiwasan kong makipagusap. kasi kung hindi tsismosa o usisera,  bumabagyo naman sa kayabangan.

oh life in abroad, not as fun as it may seem. wala kang ibang pwedeng pagkatiwalaan kundi ang sarili mo at pamilya mo.

talamak ang under the table kahit saang bansa sis.  syempre walang tax.  dagdag pera sa bulsa yun. andami ring gumagawa ng ganyan dito.  minsan amo pa nga ang nagsa-suggest na under the table na lang ang overtime.  para less tax din sa kanila.

^^^ I don't know about other countries but in SoCal, madami-dami din talaga, though stricter now.

Whatever your friends' reason for not being completely honest, it all boils down to the fact that they're not comfortable discussing it. Mahirap din kasi magsabing, "I don't wanna say" kasi mas madaming succeeding questions. So lying is the easier alternative nyaha. Baka they don't wanna say because decent as that job is, you tell someone your job, they can pretty much guesstimate how much money you make, which in turn, is people's gauge of your success. And most people would rather have other people think they've made it. :P

Give them a break na lang. It really isn't easy to live and work abroad. Nyaha. It's true, though. :P

Yabang lang ng iba kong naencounter pero that's it. :P

- "ano work mo?"

@ Laren_GT - thanks sis

On the issue of some who refuse to answer "job" and "personal info" questions - the first time I went to the US (back in 2000), I would always ask the same questions to some kababayans.  I thought that when I find common things like same province, or same school or same experience, it could start a conversation and build a network.  What I got was either puzzled look, or a polite brushing.  Medyo naoffend din ako then kase I didn't really understand.  I was just being friendly and honestly trying to survive in a foreign land.  Good thing, my sister in law and cousins briefed me on the way things are in the US. Mahirap magtiwala (from what I heard, ganito rin sa iba pang bansa) kaya ingat talaga.

But after a while (read: years) you will build a network of friends who you can trust and you will trust.  Tsaka ka lang pwede ng mag-open sa kanila (but this should be people you can really trust at mutual dapat ang relationship).  Masaya if you can surpass the challenges and make it big sa Amerika pero uulitin ko hindi ito madali.

Sa mga bagong salta, learn the way of the place sa mga luma, try to be polite without jeopardizing your security.

^ very, very true :)

as much as possible, actually, people don't want to make it awkward for other people. kaya din siguro some of them lie or quickly change the subject, when it comes to info.

as for how hard it is in the US-agree again. especially the first few years. it will take its toll on you. people seem more hostile, the weather takes a lot to get used to and you're tired all the freaking time. but after a while, you get used to it din naman. and you'll meet nice people as well who eventually become your very best friends. :)

as for retirement-i think while a lot of Filipinos express their desire to retire in The Phils., very few actually do it. if you've built a life in the US or abroad, you'll find it nearly impossible to leave it. they'll take vacations, sure, but they always end up going back to the US. isa pa, minsan, lalo na kung sa province sila titira, mitsa pa ng buhay yan eh. tapos the health care system in The Phils. is really quite dismal. and retirees aren't gonna give up their benefits no. kaya nga nagkakandakuba magtrabaho para dun eh lols. when you think about it, The Phils. is really, no country for old men/women. :P

LOL kaloka diba

thankfully, bf (now hubby) came here to follow me agad in 2 mos. time, so medyo nawala homesickness ko.  pero kahit kasama ko siya, there are still times na nakakamiss ang buhay Pinas. :P

sis mooncake - I noticed din na most Pinoys in the US, expecially yung mga near retirement age na gusto bumalik sa Pinas but when they hit the retirement, they find it hard to leave America.  Probably nga yung medical support or health care services and retirement benefits.  But sa case ng inlaws ko (80 plus), there coming home for good.  Ayaw na nila talaga sa America.

I guess if you save enough and you still have trusted relatives in the Phils., masarap pa rin tumanda at mamatay sa sariling bayan.

I had experience taking care of an elderly rin before (back in 2000), sandali lang di ko kinaya.  Naiiyak ako, though the pay is good, awang awa talaga ako.  Probably I'm not cut to be a nurse or caregiver talaga, hehe.  Kawawa ang mga matanda sa america in terms of fulfilling their emotional needs. But when it comes to their medical needs sobrang lamang sila sa mga counterparts nila sa Pilipinas.

I miss Jolibee, Gravy KFC, Rice sa mga fastfood. although malapit lang sa pinas to.. im in singapore.. working as an IT personnel.. medyo ok naman since andito sister ko, si bf, andaming classmates.. pero there is still no place like home..

Nakakamis lumabas ng bahay na andaming street foods na would not cost you more than a P100.

pero since malapit lang ako I can go home as long as I can since mura lang pamasahe. Minsan lang yung ibang pinoy akala nila nilalait sila lagi.. kasi dito when they have like donations they will tell to give it to third world countries. which is most of the people here don't mean to take it against you.

Mga pinoy kasi madali rin maoffend.. so you need to adjust kung ano ugali nila.. Happy naman dito kasi singapore is multiracial so walang racial discrimination.. pero minsan meron pa rin ilan ilan..

You are comparing two different cultures here.  I worked in the US both with Asians and whites. And I'm not talking about Pinoy lang ha. Even with Chinese and Japanese.  You don't call them by their first name, lest you'll be branded as arrogant or disrespectful.  Si husband nga, who works with Japanese, hindi sila basta basta first name lang, may "san" lagi ang name as a sign of respect.

Ano isinagot nya sa akin, na parang ako pa napahiya "Darling you're no longer in the Philippines you have to adopt the culture of Australia". Which I agree.

Quote
Cut some slacks for the Aussie Pinoys, wag kang masyadong mayabangan sa kanila.  When we are abroad we should look after one another.  Have more faith to your kababayans.

Look after one another? ang hirap mag trust sis. Tama lang siguro na i have to look after myself and my family.

Another ugly facts: Ang daming puting tamad. Lol !

Ang KFC naman dito parang imitation ! Iba ang lasa at ang gravy lasang curry. There's no place like home talaga.

peace.

pressany: yep, malungkot talaga dito. i work with older people din and they live alone, their relatives hardly visit them. nakakalungkot. but mas grabe ang lungkot nga kung may sakit tapos walang nag-aalaga nang maayos. kaya for older peeps, they really have to build solid friendships para kahit papaano, may dadamay sa kanila.

yung mga kilala ko naman, they have immediate family members din kasi talaga so talagang dito na sila, wala na din silang masyadong uuwian sa Pinas.
