There are lots of options actually, ceramics, glass, natural or engineered stone, brick etc. But remember that in pinoy kitchens, we do a lot of frying and oil splatter is very common (unless we have a dirty kitchen where the real cooking happens), choose a back splash that has an easy to clean surface.

I suggest ceramics since its very versatile, it comes in different sizes and colors, you just have to be creative in combining different sizes and colors of tiles and the look can be modern yet not very expensive. You might want to consider subway tiles, it adds a contemporary flair to a kitchen.

^^you can try looking at those big stores that sells tiles so you can see more options (more colors, more sizes).

Granite is very popular in the Philippines that's why a lot do recommend it, being natural, it adds elegance to the room. There's actually quite a good selection of colors, you just have to be aware of what is available, but black is quite common. But since it is a natural stone, the color you might want may be limited.

Another option is engineered stone (silestone) or solid surface (corian) where there are more color choices. They look just as elegant as granite.

Really modern house interiors use concrete counter tops for an industrial look. But this is pricey since its mostly custom made.

^Correct. 
When you see a particular design in print or elsewhere that you want to somehow replicate in your room, it would be best to scout around, see what materials are available and best to know the price range. That way, you can already gauge if the deign is feasible or if you can substitute.

Mas mabuti talaga that before simulan ang trabaho, you already have a plan in mind, para less ang sakit ng ulo.

Mga sis, help naman. Do you know what material is being used for drop or suspended ceilings? Gusto ko kasi maglagay ng recessed lighting sa ceiling ng living room. Kaso, yung na-Gogoogle ko use yung fiberboard tiles na mukhang asbestos ang texture. Gusto ko sana kasi smooth ang finish at di kita na pinagtagpi na tiles ang ceiling.

^ Sis,  There are 3 kinds:

Interior Decorator = This is your skilled hire but lacks the educational background with regards to the science of Interior Design. Usually they only use their talent in accessorizing and rearranging furniture to improve the look of an interior space. Hanggang paayos ayos lang sila ng room. They cannot work alongside Architects and Engineers because they do not know how to read and create building plans, or do electrical and plumbing layouts. Anyone can be an Interior Decorator.  (e.g. curtain-maker, florist, etc.) It's like buying from a pet store, you don't know where they've been or how credible they are, you only get what you see. They lack in pedigree, or papers, but they still do the job as a companion for your makulit na anak.

Interior Design Consultant = This is a holder of a bachelor's degree in Interior design, gained all the necessary skills and knowledge, but has not yet taken or passed the board exam with PRC. Meaning,wala silang license-denying them of  discounts in furniture and home accessories. LOL. But they have a huge difference from Interior Decorators. Interior Design consultants are still professionals in their area but they are limited to how much they can charge as their professional fee.   Pero pwede parin silang makipag sabayan with architects & engineers kasi equipped sila with the knowledge of the architecture lingo. You know, it's like buying a dog from a breeder. yung iba may papers, yung iba wala. Cheaper yung walang papers syempre, pero yun nga, you'll be the judge nalang of their credibility. Paano mo malalaman kung pure-blooded shihtzu nga yung binili mo..at hindi pinagsamang bulldog at shihtzu diba. LOL

Interior Designer = This is a proven pedigree and their bloodline in the papers state it. You are only given such a title when you have attained a bachelor's degree, and passed the board exam from PRC. Having a license means they also have discounts when buying their materials for their projects. They are the full-fledge partners - and sometimes defenders- of their clients. hehe Because sometimes naiiba yung design or plan dahil sa architect or engineer, but with an interior designer, she can compromise and make a layout plan which is acceptable to the architects and engineers and still get that dream design of her client.
And yes, depende sa design requirement, yung interior designer din ang gumagawa ng plumbing and electrical plans. For example, you bought a house which only has one socket for a bulb, but you need ten, your interior designer can design the electrical plan in such a way that it complements how you want your lights to look.

Usually teamwork yan tatlo in the construction, yung architect, engineer, and interior designer. Si architect yung gagawa ng form ng house, pero si engineer yung gagawa ng structure. Si designer, well, designs, pero with approval from both the architect and engineer. Kasi mamaya, you wanted to break down a wall, yun pala structural yun, meaning pag giniba mo, magigiba din yung buong second floor. LOL usually yung iba tinetake over yung job ng iba, which is sometimes acceptable or unacceptable (depends sa situation). Pero the dream team parin would be to have all 3 working together to build a dream house. Hayyyy... sarap.

ANyway, I just shared what i know and this is not to offend anyone. Sorry for the lame jokes. haha but I hope my corny analogies has explained things better.  I always do analogies to my husband and it irritates him. So sorry if i irritated anyone.

sis sofala thanks for the info one more thing pala sis nasa magkano nga pala rate ng interior designer...naka kuha kasi kami ng condo so dalawang unit yun plan namin pag-isahin para medyo lumaki then pacustomize namin mga cabinet etc,,,para walang masayang na space and yun tipong magmumukhang malaki sana yun unit kahit maliit and kaya ba yun ng 1 mth lang..tnx

actually my bf is an ID. pero he chose to teach in UP than practice his craft. mas nag-eenjoy siya sa mga academic conferences than entertaining clients. may mga clients siyang co-faculty niya, pero pro-bono lahat. 

i told him to make himself available to clients since ang may demand nga ngayon...pero ayaw talaga.

The fees vary kasi depending on the ID and the project that they would handle. The way they charge varies as well. Most common is to charge you per square meter,and some will charge you by computing the entire project cost and charging you a percentage.

A good way to know for sure is to ask your ID how they would charge you. But most probably the price she will give you is only the ID's fee and will not include the contractor's fee, the construction materials, and the furnishings that they would be using on the project.
