Sorry for being the devil's advocate here.
I was brought up kasi in a different way. I guess. Kaya siguro iba ang mindset ko. Lumaki akong deprived. But hindi ko naman naranasan magutom or mangutang at never manghingi (well with the exception on when I was a child, manghingi sa parents lang ang rule namin, otherwise, sampal ang abot namin if marinig ng parents namin nanghihingi kami sa aunt/lola, etc). Ironic?
I consider myself deprived kasi my parents only provided us the necessities. EDUCATION and FOOD above all. Pagdating sa gifts - christmas lang at birthday. I never had a birthday party or debut. Alala ko pag bday, my mom would cook spaghetti, buy me a cake and ice cream, tapos tawagin nya playmates ko na kapitbahay to celebrate with us. that's it. I used to remember why my classmates had all those Sanrio items samantalang ako hindi mabili ng mom ko. Hindi kami yung family na laging may bagong damit kung bagong taon. Bihira din kami lumabas nun, hindi kami nag o-outing or mall. Laging "tipid" mode kami. And I did not understand it then. Why ganun. Pero we have our own house, car, etc
Now that I am married and have a family, now I understood. Tipid mode sila ever since and only providing the necessities. Kasi they DO NOT want to depend on us once they grow old. They want to make sure we live our own lives and that we make sure that their grand children will also have that privilege to run their own lives without the previous generation pulling their finances down.
Point is - before they spend on something - ang question nila hindi lang "can you afford this?" ang question is, will it make a dent on your future commitments whereby most of it is still unknown as of this point? Kung binigyan nila ang eldest ng debut, ma-afford parin ba nila bigyan ng debut yung mga susunod pang mga kapatid years from now (they also tried to be as fair as possible samin magkapatid). kung nakapag aral sa private school ang panganay, can they sustain that also for the rest of the siblings? Mga Long term na tanong.
Now that they are getting old na. Ako na napipikon at times sa sobra nilang tipid. I keep on telling them, all their lives, hindi lang nila ako dineprive, pero pati nga mga sarili nila. Sabi ko, it is about time na naman siguro na they enjoy what they have worked for! Mga graduate na kami and they just have to spend lahat ng earnings nila since I would not want any of their mana. I want them to enjoy what they have sacrificed for.
and alam nyo ano ba ang sagot ng parents ko? Ok lang, because they still do not know how much medical bills they have to face in the future, not only for them but also for my grandparents.

Hanga lang naman ako, kasi simula nung pinanganak nila kami ng kapatid ko, they have always put my grandparents and us as a priority in all their financial decisions. Even if it means, walang debut, second-hand books and hand-me-downs na uniforms.
But I guess it all paid off. Walang utang-utang or whatsoever. We treat each other once in a while when we go out. Pag kami nagsama sama, lahat kami laging nag-uunahan who will pick up the bill. I treat my parents once a year din for a trip abroad or within phils kasi ayaw nila gumastos, para naman makarelax sila somehow.
Sorry ha, hindi ata ako nakatulong. Pero nagshare lang ako how to make it right. At least for your generation and the next. Otherwise, if you continue to just look at the short term, hindi titigil ang pattern. If you and your spouse do not think of your retirement and potential meds in the future pag may edad na, chances are you would also rely on your kids for that, and the cycle repeats itself. Sa future, do you want your kids to be in your situation or in your siblings' situation?
As for your parents, will have to have another post, otherwise ang haba na nito.
