When my son was 18 months old, di pa rin sya talaga nagsasalita. As in mumblings pa rin. His pedia advised us to see a DevPedia. We went to Dr. Treichler in Makati and dun nga he was diagnosed to be in the spectrum of autism pero since he was still young, di pa daw sure yun.
She advised us to start ABA therapy. After just a month of therapy, I've seen results na. Of course, may follow up din sa bahay dapat. My son is very hyper. As in short ang attention span nya, akyat yan ng akyat kung saan nya makita. Tapos pag nagsasalita sya, gibbrish talaga. di ko ma-gets.
Now, he is 2 years and 3 months old. He can say Mama, Papa and other words. Nakakaintindi na rin sya. Nauutusan na nga sa bahay yan, we wanted him to learn kasi. He can undestand instructions very well.

He'd usually say "pe-pen" if he wants to open something. He'd say "buy" pag may gusto bilin sa tindahan and he'd say "mi-milk" whenever he wants to drink milk.
Nakakatuwa pa nyan, alam nya yung mga inuutos namin sa kanya like get your dirty clothes, give Mama your dirty bottles and turn off the lights. Oh he knows how to pack his toys away after nya mag play.

my baby is already 26 months and mga 8 words lang yata na sasabi nya. I don't want to be alarmed with this because bata pa naman. I can feel that she is about to say words na....needs time lang.

Hi sis pinksuman..

My son is also 28 months and a delayed talker. He can only say less than 6 words and inconsistent pa yung iba. I think much better if you would consult a developmental pedia na rin just to make sure.

In our case, my son is also showing early signs of autism. Me and my wife's worst fear was confirmed yesterday, and his developmental pediatrician said he's under the spectrum (ASD). We kinda expect it na rin because we are closely monitoring his development. before, when he was on his 18th month, he can talk or say at least 10 words plus can sight read. Now, of all that regressed, can't even read a single word nor gesture it.

You can't go wrong in having a consultation this early specially if there's a developmental delay particularly sa speech because early intervention is so important so we can help our child at this early stage and it will definitely benefit them in the long run. I still cry a lot everyday, I think more than my wife pa nga. But I'm trying very hard to snap out of it and focus in helping our only child. He completes our family and we waited and prayed for him for 5 years to come in our life. So we took the initiative to have a consultation na kasi everyone in our family is in denial and suggesting na to wait for his 3rd birthday before kami magpa-tingin. Now, he'll start his OT next week and hopefully he will improve and start to communicate with us.

^ Backread a bit and you will find the speech milestones I posted.  From there, you can gauge whether your child has delayed speech.

mga sis, yung baby ko kasi gusto din ipatingin ng pedia nya sa dev ped kasi delayed talker. baka daw may problema. he is 18 months old. i do not think he is autistic or may problema sya kasi he understands what i tell him, sumusunod naman sya. pag may gusto sya, marunong sya mag comminicate in his own way. hindi lang talaga nagsasalita. may mga bagay nga na nao observe nya lang sa akin pero natututunan nya na agad. he knows what i do with the laundry, with cooking, pati sa pag witdraw sa atm. kasa kasama ko kasi sya palagi. he sings also, wala kang maiintindihan na salita pero maririnig mo na may tono sya at may rhythm. madalas, kakanta muna ako tapos pag sinabi kong it's his turn, kumakanta naman sya.

^ same thing with my son sis myjoy. When he was 6M kasi I started to introduced him to Sto. Nino and Papa Jesus and all the religious chatholic items, then when he turns 1yr na hindi nya kasi mabigkas yun Sto. Nino so ang sinasabi nya lang lagi is No-No.. Even sa image ni papa jesus kahit anung correct ko sa pagpronounce nya e No-no pa rin ang pagtawag nya dun. So what I did I started to buy toys like talking tom then I started to introduce talking tom to him, so this time he can promounce na yun name pero "tom" hehe..  Sabi talga ng sister ko delayed ang boys pero she said na laging kausapin or papanoorin ng mga educational shows. Right now ang gusto nya lang na show e yun show ni Jollibee na nabili ko sa Quiapo.hehe.. That time nakikita ko na rin na he learned and follows the rhythm from the show. :) May mga words din sya na hindi ko talaga maintindihan, inaadjust ko na lang ang sarili ko by asking him "where?" "turo mo kay mommy" or "come here, where?". :)

^ sis neurodev ba talaga o devped? hehe. by the way autism can only be diagnosed by the time the child is 2 years old :)

imho, a lot of dev peds give wrong diagnoses. may mga wagas magpamigay ng ASD diagnosis na keme wala lang eye contact o di lang nagsasalita autistic na agad, meron naman sobrang madamot sa ASD diagnosis na kitang kita na ang bata ay ikot lang ng ikot at hindi nagsasalita, walang eye contact at kung anuano pa. i myself have seen a lot of kids na 'communication delay' lang ang diagnosis pero halatang halata naman na ASD. i have also seen children na ASD ang nasa doctors referral eh (malamang) hindi naman.

suggestion ko nalang sis follow your doctor, kahit naman normal kids need to go to dev peds :) and also, when you get there tell the doctor as much as you can kasi hindi naman talaga makikilala ng doctor yang bata in one session. ikaw pa rin talaga ang mas nakakaalam ng skills nya :)

my toddler is delayed talker and doesn't make eye contact sometimes.  lalo na kapag tinatawag siya sa name niya.  the teacher said na dapat ipa-check ko na sa pedia for early intervention daw.  worried na ako sobra.  mangiyak-ngiyak na ako while the teacher was saying that to me.

my daughter is 28 months old na. she babbles and makes a lot of sounds, sometimes i know what she is trying to say like she would say "nom nom nom" when she wants to drink water. some times i have no idea what she wants even if she keeps babbling. she knows naman how to point at objects pag may gusto sya. tinuturo nya yung snack box nya if she wants cookies or she's hungry. kaya hindi ako masyado worried.

except recently lang, we attended a kiddie party and one of the kids there, 1 month lang ang tanda nya sa anak ko pero she really speaks very clearly. as in she pointed out the cartoon characters na nakadecorate. i will talk to our pedia this weekend when we meet with him, and see if he recommends doing any tests. actually, may meeting din kami sa isang play school this weekend to see if ok lang mag-short program ang daughter ko para ma-socialize. hopefully, late bloomer lang sya and it's not something more serious.

^ Backread and go to page 7 of this thread and check if your daughter's current vocabulary is in accordance with her age.

I suggest that you encourage your daughter to articulate her needs rather than pointing or using gestures.  If she points to her snack box, instead of just giving it to her, you can ask her "(name), what is it you want?  Do you want a snack?  Tell me, baby" or something like this.  You should also speak to her all the time, even about the most mundane things.  I used to describe objects around the house all the time to my sons " this is a ___, we use it for ___; this is a flower, it is a PINK flower."  Try to enunciate words clearly in a slightly exaggerated fashion.  Reading to her will help too.

Try taking your daughter to play dates with older kids who can speak well.

Got this link from Med Mom which may be critical for moms who are adopting the "wait and see" approach:  http://www.playingwithwords365.com/typical-speech-and-language-development/red-flags/

Social skill is the key para matutong magsalita ang bata.Yung anak ko who is turning 3 sa september he can tell stories na maiintindihan ng ibang tao, bulol lang siya sa R and L.btw he's a boy.Yung environment namin lagi siya marami nakakasalamuha, different ages, toddler, teenager, lola, adult.I don't limit kung sino kakausap sa kanya. And I observed sa lugar namin yung mga bata mabilis talaga magsalita because of social interaction. If you are living in a community, let your child interact with the janitor, the panadero,sa tindera sa suking tindahan, the guards.Huwag ninyong ilimit na kayo lang kausap.Naku modesty aside,my son knows a lot of people in our community.kahit yung brgy capitan.Even yung mga sasakyan alam niya.he would tell,"nanay dumaan van ni pastor,"!saka pag kinakausap siya no baby talk.

yung pamangkin ng ex ko hanggang 2yrs. old hindi rin nagsasalita but when she started talking na napaka daldal naman.

question ko lang sa mga sis dito, did you let your kids listen to classical music nung newborn pa lang?

ako kasi days after i gave birth may nabasa ako na make your child listen to classical music kasi maganda daw sa brain development and speech. so nag download ako ng mga mozart, beethoven basta mga classical music and pinapatugtog ko siya over and over again mula umaga hanggang gabi. 4months old siya when he said his first word "papa" then nasundan ng nasundan 1yr. old kaya niya na gumawa ng sentences he knows more than 100 words na. may flash cards din ako ng mga words and books na binabasa sa kanya. at 1yr kaya niya makanood ng isang buong movie ng walang tayuan like lion king, etc, well behave siyang bata. creative din (magaling mag drawing), magaling sa math, science, language and computer.

hindi ko alam kung may kinalaman yung pag paparinig ko sa kanya ng classical music 1week pagkalabas niya. may mga sis ba dito na ganon din experience? if ever kasi baka malaking tulong talaga ito sa mga mothers. and sa mga makakabasa gawin nila yun for their kids.
