^Thanks sis mom.of.inchikoy for the info. I will look into that. Mukhang matagalan nga ang waiting time ah.

^Sis Jenny, how did you go about requesting an appointment with the speech pathologist? Kapag kasi tinatanong ko sa child health nurse at GP sabi nila hindi naman daw sya speech delayed kaya ndi ako makakuha ng referral. At the moment, may word spurt naman sya at nakaka-immitate na ng words namin yon nga lang hindi pa fluid at may missing letters. My son is turning 21 months at the end of the month.

We're in Geelong, VIC, an hour by train from Melbourne. Kayo ba?

@ lalei - I just called sa health centre dito sa suburb namin asking id they can recommend a speech pathologist then sinabi na meron sila speech drop in clinis parang assessing the child abt his speech. After assess they will schedule / make recommendation sa specialist which only took as for 2 weeks waiting. Then nung na check / assess na sia parang the specialist recommend (thoguh no problem sa hearing) to have also an auditory test just to make sure 100%  walang proble tpos will prioritize daw na maisama agad sa early intervention program hopefull next year.

But since we are leaving for Manila, might as well bring him to specialist din.

One factor din asi I consider is di din naman kasi gano nasosocialize with other kids son ko kais most of the time dito lang kami sa bahay tapos ako lang kausap. Kaya  now I'm planning to bring him sa mga playgroups.

I think meron di yan sa inyo, sa inquire (typical inquire lang, free pa) tapos inquire ka din ng playgroups organized by the govt. Ang alam ko halaos lahat naman me ganyan sa tin.

Miakka didn't speak in understandable sentences until she was past 2yo. Before I was also worried na baka delayed talker siya kasi one word, one word lang siya.

Before, lagi ko winiwish na sana she could talk na.

Ngayon, my favorite game with her, "the one who doesn't talk the longest wins a prize" SHE ALWAYS LOSE.

Brother ko din, he was 3 yo na when he started talking in sentences. Ngayon, consistent 1st honor and he recently won a declamation thingie.

I think as long as they understand instructions, wala naman dapat ikaworry. It also helps if there is someone who always play with them. Yaya did a lot for us kasi pagdating niya dun nagsimula maging super daldal ng daughter ko.

Di naman namin sinasanay but since yung kalaro niya ganon magsalita, my son always mention his name everytime his saying something. Like, instead of saying please help me, he will say, help tutus, mama make milk, he'll say make deydey tutus mama.Sometime its cute pakingan kaso di kaya sobrang ganon di na mawala?

the baby boys in our family mga delayed talker.  baby ko is turning 2 on the 17th madaldal siya pero hindi pa maintindihan ang sinasabi niya. sabi nga ng mom ko naglalatin daw siya. pero mostly my cousins nung baby pa sila mga 3 years old na naging maayos pagsasalita na naiintindihan na talaga.

basta dont babytalk to them kasi lalong made-delay pagsasalita nila. talk to them as if marunong na talaga sila. kasi mas makakatulong sa kanila ang ganun ;)

my son is turning 3 na; he knows a lot of words, can do two-word phrases, but most of the time hindi pa din clear yung mga sinasabi nya. hindi maintindihan, parang puro babble pag mahaba na yung sinasabi nya. worried lang ako because yung ibang kasing-edad nya parang nakaka-converse na ng derecho pero sya hindi pa. nakakaintindi na rin naman sya ng instructions. i feel that his speech is considered delayed na for his age, considering na hindi pa sya nakakapag-converse na kagaya ng kids same age as his. yung iba kasi parang kaya na makipag-usap sa adults ng tuwid eh.  :-\

hi mommies, hay super comforting to hear about other delayed talkers. My son is turning 2 on jan 17th and he can only say one-syllable words. Usually, his one syllables ay paulit ulit pero iba-iba ang ibig sabihin  depending on how he says it.

Ti - shoes, open, outside
Bye - no, ayaw, bye talaga
Ta - water
Ma - mama, milk
Boo - dora, dog

At first, when he was around 1.5yo, I thought he was autistic nga. But he seems to really understand what we say naman. In fact, nauutusan naman - close the door, pack up, give to me, where is the etc?

Feel guilty din because I am not able to spend as much time with him. I really want to do OT and speech therapy na nga just to make sure that he will not be further delayed.

What is the first step to do this - should I go straight to a speech therapist or a doctor? Who can you recommend in the quezon city area?

Thanks in advance.

Just want to share that my son, 22 months now, has a word spurt during the Christmas break and is starting to form 2-word phrases. Tyagaan lang talaga siguro. Masyado lang akong nag-panic.

my daughter who just turned 22mos improved a bit on her speech. medyo nadadagdagan like when she calls her baby sister, she calls her TIF (before te te lang). sana magtuloy tuloy. we always talk to her, how i wish she could talk straight already.

Ang 3 year old son ko din tamad magsalita. nakakaintindi naman sya pero sobrang tamad makipag usap sa amin. siguro wala din kasi syang kalarong bata kaya ganon sya.

palagi na namin syang kinakausap at try ko din isama sya sa mga playgroups para matuto syang makisama.

sana next time may ma post na akong improvement.

same here sis..yung anak ko tamad din daw magsalita sabi ng pedia nya...tulad mo din, walang kasamang bata sa bahay o nakakausap ng ibang bata..kaya nga maaga sya pumasok sa school para may makasalamuha sya...nag try ako magpa sched sa dev.ped...pakahirap kumuha ng slot na maaga, palibhasa konti lang sila...sabi naman ng pedia ng anak ko, dalin ko daw muna sa neurologist, para ma test ang IQ..medyo alanganin ako sa suggestion ng pedia na dalin sa neuro eh..smart naman ang anak ko, wala naman ako makita na kakaiba sa kanya maliban sa hindi pa naiimprove ang conversation ng anak ko..

My kids are delayed talkers too but when they started, they couldn't stop.  At 2 years, 6 months of age, they could already say 4-5-word sentences.  They understand and speak English and Tagalog, even some Bisaya. :)

My advice to worried moms is to continue to talk to your kids.  Engage them in conversation even about the most mundane things and even if they do not reply. And, this is very important, limit tv exposure.

Sis Marose, what books can you suggest for Joehna's age? HELP!

^ Hi Joefe, when Marty and Milo were approaching 2 years of age, they were really interested in picture books and not really so much in story books.  They also liked flash cards with pictures of objects.

For story books, I really like those by Eric Carle, Karen Katz and Sandra Boynton.  There's a good selection of children's books at Fully Booked in Bonifacio High Street.

My kids' favorite book now is The Very Hungry Caterpillar by Eric Carle. :)  Oh, and they now appreciate their Time-Life books, especially when their lola reads to them.  Their favorites from that series are Moonlight, Good Morning, Baby and Just a Minute Mommy.

For a girl like Joehna, maybe Dora the Explorer books and the Maisy books by Lucy Cousins.

Sis quixotic (sorry kahit hindi addressed sa akin yung question mo, may I answer it also), I would recommend Dr Seuss's small board books (not the big ones, mahahabang sentences na kasi yun).  Maganda ito kasi simple rhyming words lang ang gamit, enough to hold a baby's attention and for her to remember the words corresponding to the pictures.

When choosing books for my baby, first I read it aloud.  Pag hindi maganda ang flow ng words, or for some reason ang hirap basahin aloud kahit simple lang ang words, yung tipong magba-buckle ka (like Baby Einstein books), we normally don't buy it.  I'm not an expert nor do I have an education degree, but based from experience, pag madaling basahin ang book mas naka-catch ng anak ko yung words at kaya nyang ulitin.  I would say 60% of the words she can say now are from Dr Seuss's books.

I don't particularly recommend Dora books (especially the small board ones), medyo may sabit ang grammar (although pwede na, but I'm very particular) and could use a more thorough editing.  My daughter likes Dora so we bought her a couple anyway.  Hehe.

i also worry about my 18-month old son. i don't know if i am obsessing or if it is too early to worry.
he could only say the following words na medyo clear:
dada
papa
dede
te-te (thank you)
bo-bo (ball)
and barely grumbles out other small words.
pero lagi ko na siya pina-practice, lagi ko siya pinapa-follow sa mga words ko and i try to speak slowly para he could understand it clearly. i am comparing his development kasi sa Ate niya who progressed ng maaga sa speech skills niya.

@marose, since wala rin kasama or makakausap na bata anak ko ganyan din ginawa ko sa kanya. Kinakausap namin sya ng dadi nya kahit mga simple things, activities etc kaya masipag magsalita anak namin :) sa sobrang sipag e sabi nung teacher nya dati (inalis namin sya sa school na yun nitong 2nd sem) e kwento raw ng kwento anak namin. Kahit daw yung process ng mga simple tasks dinidescribe pa daw at laging nagtatanong. In short naiingayan sila sa bata. Dinidevelop ko speech ng anak ko and yun yung alam ko na way para mas magsalita sya kaya queber na sa teacher nya.
