hi mommies! need help on what to do. nun second quarter assessment kasi my daughter's teacher recommended to have her assessed by a speech therapist/pathologist (are they the same?)kasi she seems to have difficulty in expressing herself, like for example in interview questions she doesn't answer. actually i noticed it early on when she started school kasi i've talked to some of her classmates and they can hold a real conversation with adults na. my daughter kasi couldn't that time, but her vocabulary is ok. so i set an appointment with dr. dimalanta and dra. tippy tanchanco. she had improved a lot na till the last quarter even getting an excellence in mandarin award for the last 2 quarters (we're not chinese by the way, so i could not teach her in that area, sya lang talaga). she makes sense na din and makes kwento somehow of what happens in school, before kasi even if i badger her with questions she would not reply. kanina we just had our ptc and she still recommen ded the same although she said na there's no need for me to consult a dev ped coz she said she doesn't see anything else wrong with her except for that.  i'm confused right now if we'll still take her to a dev ped or just have her assessed by a speech pathologist. btw if we have already consulted with a dev ped, will the therapy center still do the assessment? thank you so much

sis, may OT therapy sessions na home-based, ask for the rates and agree on a schedule.

For STs, parang clinic-based yata lahat because they are in demand, sila ang pinupuntahan talaga

re home ot or speech, may mga therapists na nghohome talaga. like me i do homwcare din pero ontinf speech lang nghohome kasi puno agad sched nila talaga. sa charge namam iba iba din pero ako i charge x1.5-2 nh clinic rate to offset my travel/time expenses

^ What was the evaluation before of Dr. Dimalanta and Dr. Tanchanco?  Did they recommend speech therapy?

hi sis marose, we haven't gone to either yet, our sched with dr. dimalanta is on may pa and with dr. tanchanco on mid of june pa. my daughter's teacher is not that keen on dr. dimalanta coz she said that he tends to label easily then she said na we don't need to go to a dev ped na my daughter needs to have her speech assessed lang.

It's better pa rin to consult a dev ped for a more holistic perspective.  Yung communication problem kasi of your child might be linked to other issues.

Tip lang mga sis. Sa amin (PT and OT, not sure sa SP kasi di naman sila nakalicense under PRC, but may association sila but i dont know their rules) pwede ANY doctor mag refer but then again, if you are after "diagnosis" and "labels" then we cannot give you that, only dev peds can. Pero yun basic problem areas and skills, kaya i-eval

Re dev ped assessment, for me ah, kids with and without delays can benefit from it. Wala naman masama  if you just want to see if your kid's development is at par ba, below, above, etc

yeah you have a point there, actually kaya medyo hirap ako magdecide kasi my husband and my in laws are very much against it. they don't see anything wrong naman daw with her, e they are not with her 24/7 kaya they don't notice the small things na napapansin ko specially when she's with her peers. the main problem with her kasi is she doesn't make kwento. pero she talks a lot naman and with sense. her vocabulary is ok din naman. di ba at her age 3 years and 7 mos super kwento na sila e, her teacher confirmed it kasi during snack time her classmates halos couldn't eat sa kakakwento pero sya tahimik lang, listening to them and eating her food lang.  thank you so much for all your inputs, really helped me.  I'm super decided now to take her to a dev ped. thanks again!

^ Sana all parents are pro-active like you sis. Ganyan favorite kong parents e. Hehe! mas madali for us teachers/therapists to work with proactive parents kasi they listen and cooperate

Hi sis, i think we have the same problem/case with our daughter. How old na siya? Mine is 4. Pag ok ang mood niya, she talks with real sense just like an adult. But pag hindi ok ang mood, she can easily throw a tantrum & cry. She cannot express herself well. And to compare her with children of the same age as well as those younger or "smaller than her" medyo huli siya in terms of socialization. She just finished her 1 year in montessori school, the 1st sem she was ok but 2nd sem nag regress. Yesterday we had our 2nd PTC and ang concern ng teachers sa kaniya , extreme shyness.  I don't think my daughter needs a speech therapy cause hindi siya bulol. She's a normal child at home & talks to us & can be really maingay when she's happy. Pero when we're out kala mo hindi makabasag pinggan. I tried bringing her to a psychologist, initial assessment was that she's a normal child. Though I was not really satisified with the service kase that psychologist wasn't able to address our concern with my daughter. It was just the usual advice na, hayaan mo lang umiyak and don't give in easy. Haay, hindi namman spoiled sakin ang anak ko! So sana no one in here would be able to get that psychologist cause you will just throw your money away. Searching in the internet for answers, may mga nabasa akong symptoms that could tell abut my daughter's behavior. It could be "selective mutism" it's a behavior where a child talks at home normally with her family but doesn't want to talk with others if there's a need to talk. Parang it's a type of anxiety disorder which cause is unknown. The directress in her school didn't advice us see a developmental pedia because they don't see any symptoms that would relate to autism and the like, because i-assess lang daw daughter ko & just the same sasabihin lang na normal siya. What we need daw is an expert who can help us handle her behavior. Some kind of therapy would do. So now, im looking for clinical psychologists who knows how to handle this kind of behavior.

Anyone here mommies, who has the same case with ours? Maybe we can open a new thread. Sis you may try calling the Ateneo Jaime Bulatao Center for Psychology Services. They conduct consultations and therapy for individuals & families.

^ You can also consult a behavioral/developmental pediatrician.  Dr. Tanchanco is one.  She does not just diagnose or rule out developmental disorders.  She also suggests the appropriate therapy (whether OT, PT, ST, SPED, etc.) or strategy for children who are developmentally at par but may otherwise have behavior or issues that the parents need to address.  You may want to explore this option (i.e., going to a behavioral pediatrician or expert).
