Hi...im new here
I have a 9yo son with mixed receptive-expressive language disorder. I noticed he is having difficulty coping up in school. He's already in 3rd grade and school works are starting to become complicated, more so, when he reach higher levels. He can only make simple sentences without reasoning. He was seen by a developmentalist in Phil Children's Hospital. The doctor recommended Thinkids for speech therapy and Worldlab for the reading. The assessment in Thinkids = P3000 and therapy session is P600/hr. The 3-4days assessment at Worldlab costs P5000 and the therapy session is P700/hr (minimum 15hrs). Too expensive and I haven't heard any feedbacks from these schools. Can you recommend tried and tested good teachers who could handle school-aged children? We're trying to catch up with lost years in my son's developmental years. Thanks ...

sis my son goes dyan sa Thinkids (therapeutic intervention for kids),...Kaya mahal assessment kase 2 hours sya..Unlike sa iba na 1 hour [textspeak!]..tapos ang binigay sa kin di lang naman tlaga assessment kundi pati program na gagawin sa anak mo..Magagaling sila sis...Sulit...than spend 500 sa mga therapists na wala namang goals at di din naman mag improve anak mo..kase nangyari sa kin yan..been to 2 regular speech therapists and sadly yun ang nakita ko sa kanila..:(Bago lang clinic nila...maganda din ang facilities and ang mga toys nila eh ok na ok....highly recommended ko sila...mga galing St. Luke's ...visit mo sila sis...please see my message above..

oh i see. Thanks for the info sis. We are planning to have my son assessed. Naka pag pa schedule na ako kay DR. VILMA BAGAY-SALCEDO in St. Lukes. Pero nag hahanap pa din ako ng ibang dev. pedias at therapy centers.

^ang alam ko lang na marikina based dev ped is Dra. Rita Villadolid at St. Victoria Hospital. She holds clinic there every thursday if I am not mistaken.

My son, now 3 1/2 years old,  has been attending OT and SP as he was diagnosed with Developmental Language Disorder.  Almost 5 months of doing SP, ang laki na ng improvement.. Dati usually single- to 2-word utterances lang sya.  One of the goals initially was to make him say 3-word utterances, pero now more than that pa kaya nya.. He also can express himself more, so the focus now is on articulation.  I am very happy with his speech pathologist.  I was told she was the cum laude in her batch this year.  Ang galing talaga and thorough when giving feedback at the end of each session.  And you can feel she genuinely loves kids.  The center though is small and a bit old but nevertheless I am very happy with my son's progress. 

But I cannot say the same with the OT.  My son's behavior concerns me more now.  While he is enrolled in a regular school as a nursery, with good feedback naman academically, yung behavior, writing, and attention/focus ang medyo mas problem.  Though we started OT only in February, parang compared sa progress sa speech, medyo nakukulangan ako sa OT.  Isip ko tuloy masyado ba ako nagmamadali mag-improve sya o dahil ba yun partly sa kakayanan ng therapist.  I want sana sa Therabilities, yun nga lang lalayo kami, dagdag din sa expenses, di ko na ata kaya pang stretch yung budget namin.  Any center as good as Therabilities within QC?  Kasi now parang mas gusto ko tutukan yung OT.

^ Sis, hanap ka ng center na UP Manila grads ang mga OT.  Sa Therabilities kasi, kaya magagaling ang mga OT most of them UP Manila grads.  When I was looking for a center in QC (hirap to get a slot at Therabilities), I would ask if the OTs are from UP Manila.

Try mo pa-assess ang son mo sa Healing Touch at Mapagkawanggawa Street, Sikatuna Village.  My sons go there for OT once a week for refinement of fine motor skills mainly and para din makapag-focus dahil baka ipasok ko sila sa traditional school in two years.  Ngayon, hindi pa issue masyado ang pag-bargain nila minsan sa teachers (my sons could be very headstrong kasi) since they're in a Montessori school.  Pero nag-advise nga ang teachers nila plus their dev pedia na makakatulong ang OT for them to develop compliant behavior, aside from improving their fine motor skills.  Just being pro-active.

So far, happy naman ako sa mga OT ng sons ko.  Hindi ko nga lang alam kung gaano katagal ito dapat. Siguro naman by 3-4 months, may improvement na.

^With all due respect sis, i think graduates of other schools are also good. I have worked with therapists from both UST and UP, and magaling din sila. Iba iba yun approach e. I have an OT friend who works in Healing Touch and UST grad yun

^^Di lang sa therapist yan, may factor din yun kid, his/her parents, entire family, school,schedule, etc. If you are worrying about your kid's progress in OT, you can ask your son's OT regarding your concerns.

^^Sige sis, I'll discuss this with hubby.  Sabi nya nga after ng first followup visit namin this September 19 kay Dr. Tanchanco, pagusapan namin if ililipat namin ng OT son ko, sabihin na lang daw namin if ever sa center and sa OT nya na may nirecommend si Dra. for OT. 

Actually sis, yun nga din naisip ko na sa UP-grad OT ko din ipahandle since talagang ok for me yung SP nya from UP.  Di naman sa I am underestimating yung capability ng OT namin pero since improvement ng son ko nakasalalay, syempre kung may mas makapagbibigay ng mas pang improvement sa son ko dun sana kami.  Thanks again sis marose..

^sis rhumbafrapp, yes sis.. All schools naman have their good and best students.  Actually, I believe not all who are good academically are good in clinical setting.  Nasa training, experience, and diskarte rin ng therapist.   Mage-gauge mo na lang yun somehow pag nagthetherapy na kayo.  Saka siguro nga dapat din kahit papano ok yung facilities pag OT kasi iuutilize nila yun during therapy.   Thanks sa input sis

^good point sis yeah dapat the clinic is well-equipped (not naman meaning dapat may vestibulator, pool, etc siyempre it depends kung ano need ng kid) more in terms of toys and materials and space. OTs are very creative (trained to be) so magaling mag-adapt.
Another  suggestion sis, you may want to ask your OT to do school visit para makapag school assessment siya and conference with parent/teachers.

@rhumbafrapp, pardon me.  I did not mean to put other schools down.  I am just laying a preference.  I am unabashed about saying that I prefer UP grads - for doctors and for therapists.  I am a UP grad myself and that is probably why I have this bias for UP people so when I look for professionals, I almost always tend to ask for UP grads.  For me, maganda kasi talaga ang training sa UP Manila for OT/PT and UP-PGH for Med and when I talk to them, we're usually in sync.  Not saying that therapists or doctors from other schools are not as good.  Based lang iyan sa experience ko.    

@kitty07, hindi masyadong maganda ang facilities ng Healing Touch, not if you compare it with centers like Therabilities.  One of my sons went to Therabilities for PT naman when he was 1 year old.  But since my sons naman do not need sensorial therapy, etc. at table based lang their therapy, okay na with me ang Healing Touch.  It's homey and I like Ven (the person who mans the reception) and the OTs as well.

I just want to know san SP ng anak mo?  My saon was diagnose with the same disorder as your son but he is now 2 yrs old and 8 months.  The dev ped recommended OT and ST and ABR.  I am now starting to explore about the disorder and all the possibilities.  Please give me ideas how do you start?  I am at a lost right now thinking that maybe my son can still develop his speech and lanuage as he grow older but also im thinking that it might hinder him and give him other problems in other aspects of life. kawawa naman baby ko.... please advice.... thanks...

sis nj1022, sorry for the late reply, wasn't able to visit the thread this past few days.  My son's speech pathologist is Teacher Weng, cum laude of UP batch 2011.  I'll send you via PM the name and contact # of the center sis.  Try to contact the center sis if there's still open schedule available or if you want to be placed in the waiting list.  We were fortunate kasi when we started OT in February, naka-lista na kami sa kanya while waiting for her to graduate.  She will evaluate your son the first two sessions and she'll discuss it with you, her assessment and goals for your son.   She is very nice and easy to talk to, and like what I've said very thorough with the assessment and feedback after every session.  There is no harm in having our sons go to SP.  While we'll never know rin naman if their speech will develop on its own eventually (like what others would say) or not, pero time lost na kung late talaga development then saka pa lang tayo magpapatherapy.  The earlier the intervention the better.  With my son, laking improvement with his speech and I hope to see more as we continue with his therapy.

Re: Thinkids, si T. Jeri lang yung alam ko na nagtrain sa US for PROMPT (Level 2 na yata sya), the others dito na lang. Im not sure if yung training/seminar ng PROMPT dito for level 1 na (Di kasi ako pumunta sa training, super mahal! 40k yung training/seminar fee).

sis may i know how old is your kid and what made you concern about eating behavior? coz i have also a son 2yrs old na siya pero napapansin ko di siya pa siya marunong ngumuya (chew) or parang ang tamad niya mag chew ng food. kaya hirap pakainin pili lang ang kinakain niya ang it starts to bother me now.

please sis share your info about this issue..thanks

^hi sis, it's my for friend's son actually. 2 years old na kasi yun pero ang kinakain lang cerelac and milk. tapos konting biscuits. if you make him eat rice, butil by butil lang kasi hindi talaga nya io-open ang mouth nya for rice/viand, even fruits. naawa na kasi ako sa friend ko, my 4 yr old mahirap pakainin pero kumakain naman ng rice/viand, fruits, vegetables, so hindi ganun kahirap.

her pedia has advised her to undergo dev ped screening kaso feb 2012 pa ang sked nila. tapos iniisip ko kung pwede kaya sa dev ped ang ganung problems? yung related sa food? kasi nung in-assess kami parang wala naman naitanong tungkol sa kung ano kinakain ng anak ko. hehe.

^ Sa dev ped namin tinatanong ang eating habits ng bata during visits.  May milestones din kasi for eating.  And she also gives tips on how to make our kids feed themselves without need of subo-subo.  Actually, helpful nga si Dr. Tippy kasi my kids are easy to feed and they have been feeding themselves since they were 3 years old.

just want to ask if anybody here heard of or have any feedback with NEST (Nurturing Early Skills Therapy Center) in Cainta. Kasi I have two choices it's either NEST or Movement Matters for my 4yo kid - he's going for OT & ST (and if you could recommend great teachers na din )

any advice po if I should start both OT & ST at the same time or if it's better if he'd go on OT first and later na lang yung ST.
