sis okey lang ba talaga as maintenance yung allerkid sa bata na 1.5 ?kasi un baby ko dati pinaka allerkid sya for 3 months....tapos na 1.10 months na sya loratadine sya for 1 month...anyone had tried that loratadine safe ba sya??...hndi ba masa a yang antihistamine na yan..ano ba pinaka side efects senyo if anyone had tried..ako kasi as much as possible sana ayaw ko ng gamot ams gusto ko natural remedy lang,....i want to try vaporizer safe ba yun to use kahit almost everyday i mean hndi ba nakakahigh yun>?kasi di ba menthol like na amoy yun....tenks pow

At 1 year and 5 months, AR na ba kaagad ang diagnosis sa kanya?
I am concerned kasi that more and more kids below the age of 2 years of age are being diagnosed with AR when colds and other upper respiratory tract infections are very common for that age group. It is estimated that kids <2y.o. may have a maximum of 8 upper respiratory tract infections/year.
Also, there are relatively few safety studies for the use of loratadine for kids <2y.o. as opposed to cetirizine. Loratadine is safe to use for kids >2 y.o for a period of 3 months. Cetirizine, another 2nd generation anti-histamine (popularly known as Virlix, Zyrtec and Alnix) has been extensively studied in the "Early treatment of the atopic child" study where it was given for kids for 18 months. In terms of safety profile, cetirizine is the only anti-histamine that has been proven to be safe for infants as young as 6 months of age and may be given for a long period of time. It is also metabolized by the kidneys so the metabolites come out in the urine.
Side effects of anti-histamines: sedation, drowsiness, dry mouth and rarely, hyperactivity in very young kids and the elderly.
Zadec or Zaditen, a mast cell stabilizer and technically not an anti-histamine but works like it, may also be safely given for kids as young as 6 months of age and may be given for a period of 6 months. However, it is used for the prevention of allergies and not for the treatment of an acute attack of allergy.
I would not recommend the use of mentholated vaporizers for kids since it has been associated with chemical pneumonitis. Better pa rin ang steam inhalation rather than mentholated vaporizers.

^ Sis, I would advise against self medicating, especially when steroids are involved as it has many side effects and should only be given if prescribed by a physician.

Anti-histamines like Allerkid may be given for a long time to prevent further attacks of AR. Thus, it may be used as part of conservative preventive maintenance for AR.
To be strict about it, the true maintenance treatment for AR are nasal steroid sprays especially when the AR is already persistent and affecting the quality of life of the patient.
BUT in the case of young children, we sometimes opt to go conservative and instead of nasal steroids, we may give anti-histamines and montelukast.

Montelukast is the generic name of Singulair.
It was first formulated as an anti - asthma medication, but after several researches/scientific studies, they found out that it can also be used to treat AR (but not as the sole treatment; it is usually combined with an anti-histamine). It may also be given for urticaria or hives.

hi mga sis pasali ako ha.... yun anak ko is 14years old na and nag start yun allergic rhinitis nya when he was around 1 year old... almost all nasal sprays na try na namin until such time na sya na din ang sumuko sa medications.... pero napapansin ko as he grows older i think na out grow na niya unti unti yun sneezing every morning and the all year round na may running nose eh nababawasan na din not until this week na sobrang grabe yun attack to the point na di na makatulog ... ive been searching for a new doctor sa Asian ito [textspeak!] ang pinaka malapit sa amin.... baka naman sis meron kyo ma recommend... i want to give him steroids na pero ayaw naman din nya.....

my 11 month old daughter also has allergic rhinitis. she was diagnosed when she was still 6 months old pa lang. what made her decide that this was really the case is yung pagkakaroon naming magkakapatid ng allergic rhinitis. rtw kasi ang business ng parents ko so madalas maraming tela and stocks na naiiwan sa bahay so it causes our allergy. ako being a mom, hirap talaga ko to differentiate whether colds talaga ang cause ng runny nose niya or allergic rhinitis so i make it a point to really bring her to the pedia kapag sinisipon siya. the pedia looks at her throat and sabi niya if it's not reddish at all hindi inflammation ang cause kung hindi allergy lang. what the pedia advised is that we nebulize her with NSS for 3-4 times a day kapag umaatake yung allergy niya. she is also on virlix drops as her maintenance simula pa nung lumamig ang panahon and were going to continue that daw until february pa. so far she's doing well naman na now. =)

my friends told me that their childrens AR is actually tamed by Wheatgrass juice.  I bought a bottle before but nadiri yung baby ko sa color. Will try to get another one and hopefully inumin nya and sana magwork din sa baby ko.
