my son was given montelukast for a month. may prescribed period lang po ba ang montelukast? ibig sabihin, after 1 month, di na i-e-extend? or depende?

^ Puwedeng i-extend if okay ang response niya sa Montelukast.  Always consult your doctor before you continue the medication. Sa Montelukast kasi, you have to take it for some time before you will notice a big improvement, unlike steroid meds na instant ang relief.

Ako nga, I've been taking Montelukast since September because pag ganitong season, prone talaga ako ma-hika.

i also had the same experience baby ko b4 lagi barado ilong went to diff. pedia allergologist, derma, pulmo, E.N.T.
i went to strict diet din kasi breastfeed c baby as in naging rice and veggi lang me para talagang safe then eventually when we turned 1 dahandahan na outgrow until now sometimes ganun padin pero not  as same as nun months old lang sya

stop na ang montelukast ng son ko. nung una kasi maganda response nya, den sumunod hindi na. so eto, naka babyhaler kami for a week... weekly kami sa pulmo nya, balik kami on friday. sana ok na sya by then.... and naka sched kami to see his allergologist-pedia.

^actually sis, since november hindi na gumaling yung allergy-asthma nya. yung attack na hindi sya maka hinga, na kelangan itakbo sa hospital hindi pa naman kami umaabot dun.
pero sa gabi before montelukast, hirap sya huminga.

kaya eto, naka steroid - babyhaler sya dapat may magandang effect na by friday...

According to safety studies, Montelukast may be given for a period of 3 to 6 months without any major side effects. As to how long it should actually be given will depend on the response of the patient as assessed by your physician during follow ups.

Inhaled steroids are generally safer in terms of side effects on growth and development compared to oral steroids.
However, caution must still be exercised in the case of kids less than 2 years of age, since their bodies are still developing. Inhaled steroids should only be given when conservative management has failed and at the lowest dose and at the lowest amount of time possible. Constant follow up with your sub-specialists (pulmo and allergist) is a must.
Mukhang sobrang atopic ang family ni mom of inchikoy kaya even at a young age and with breastfeeding, nagmanifest na kaagad ang symptoms. Hope her baby gets better.

^ thanks sis! ask ko lang kung doctor ka? kasi the way you say it parang specialist :)yung eldest ko yung naka inhaled steroids. he's 3.4yro. breastfed for only 2months. yung baby ko ngayon ang exclusively breastfed, 6months and counting... my youngest has atopic dermatitis... pero sya yung nag ka pneumonia on his day1.

Sorry, naconfuse ako kasi sa "side effects in infancy". I thought it was your youngest son who was on inhaled steroids. 
At 3.4 years old, conservative treatment pa rin is best.
But I think, you mentioned that montelukast didn't work, kaya he was switched to inhaled steroids. At this age group, medyo minimal na ang effect on growth and the HPA axis. Usually, local lang side effects, like oral thrush. Marunong na ba syang mag-gargle? Ideally, patients have to gargle or brush their teeth after using inhaled steroids.

It is considered effective if it has lessened the symptoms of your kid, such as no more daily sneezing, cough and colds. How long has she been on it?

2 months palang pero dahil sa weather may cough and colds pa din.

Oh, ok. There have been a lot of asthma attacks lately due to the on and off cold weather but the montelukast should have at least lessened the frequency and intensity of the cough and colds.

^sis leletmd, are nebulizers like combivent have steroid content?  Yun kasi binibigay ko sa daughter ko when she has cough (usually following an episode of allergic rhinitis). She just turned 3.  Her pedia naman initially precribed it when she was almost 3 yo.  She also said na mga 5 days lang gamit.  When my daughter's cough recurs, we just give it to her as needed na...we dont really consult our pedia.  But it's never prolonged use. Bad ba?

^ No, combivent doesn't contain steroids. It is a combination of a beta agonist (salbutamol) plus an anti-cholinergic (ipratropium bromide). Sorry for the medical jargon  but what it basically does is to open up the airways so that excess phlegm can get out. It is really meant for as needed use ( 3 to 5 days at the most). kasi, if you use it almost daily, then dapat naka maintenance na sya.
I usually advice my patients that if they've been nebulizing with salbutamol or combivent for 3 days and there's still no effect, then it's time to head back to the clinic for a check up.

^thanks sis.  Usually it works naman...as in it lessens the coughing almost immediately.  She vomits kasi when she coughs really hard kaya when she has her attacks, we ususally just give her combivent before she sleeps (and after she finishes her bottle...sssshhhh...gusto ng pedia nya no more bottle after her 3rd bday hehe). mana kasi sa akin anak ko eh. Ako naman I take berodual when I have coughing attacks (I have allergic cough).  Lately I have been experiencing such attacks but since I'm breastfeeding, I try to minimize puffing.

mga sis, parang me allergic rhinitis ata si baby, 3 month old pa lang siya, every morning umiiyak siya dahil congested nose niya, i tried using salinase, iiyak siya pagkapatak ko then titigil naman. me iba pa bang way para maiwasan ito, madaling araw lang kasi siya ganito. me dapat ba akong iwasan like huwag malakas ang aircon or ang fan para maiwasan na mag ganun siya?
