mga mommies share naman tayo dito on how we take care of our kids when they are sick...yung common sickness like cough, colds, vomitting and fever...some pedia kasi would prescribe meds agad but there are also some who would just advice to give our kids lots of fluids and fruits. our tendency kasi is to get praning kasi kawawa naman sila pagme sakit...

in my case, i have a nearly 3weeks newborn and 21mos old panganay...both of them are girls. kakastart lang ng panganay namin sa daycare and been sickly lately (on off ang ubo sipon fever at pagsusuka--but she's getting better na)...ganun daw talaga on the 1st 6mos pagnagdaycare ang kids.

plus, first winter din niya and soon spring na kaya royal rumble ang weather. me sipon na din ang bunso namin.

nahihirapan din kasi ako dito sa denmark kasi di sila mareseta ng gamot at vitamins unlike satin, kaya pahirapan pagme sakit yung panganay namin. mabilis pa naman siyang mangayayat kaya i'm so praning pagme sakit siya

kayo mga sis, anong preventive measures ang ginagawa niyo and how do you take care of them when they are sick...ano ba ang usual do's and dont's (minus the pamahiins...

)

Naku sis, sinabi mo pa. Mahirap nga ang kumuha ng medicines dito sa ibang bansa. Although nasanay na ako. Kasi kung ma-frustrate lang ako eh baka maloka ako dito.

Kapag fever, bigay ako ng suppository kapag around 39 degrees. Nose-spray lang ako pag sinisipon sila. Pag nag-dede pa ang baby, I give the nose-spray 5 mins before mag-milk para makainom siya ng mabuti.

Meron ding nabibili dito na parang vicks, apply ko iyon para lumuwang din ang paghinga. And also, kung may sariling room ang babies mo at clogged nose, lagyan mo chopped onions sa ilalim ng bed. Mabisa ito..na-try ko na. Maamoy nga lang talaga.

Tapos, pumunta ka sa drug-store at magtingin-tingin ng mga homeopathic na gamot. Marami sila niyan dito eh.

hi sis!
since your eldest just started attending preschool, expect mo na laging may cough and colds daughter mo especially during winter. ganyan na-notice namin sa son ko simula nag-aral sya. last fall pina-flu shot namin sya, awa naman ng Diyos once pa lang inubo't sipon unlike before na every other week may sakit sya.
whenever my son has cough and colds i only give him lots of fluids and 2 tsps of honey at bedtime to relieve itchy throat. for stuffy nose, i give him Saline nasal drops. i really don't give medicines to him unless may throat or ear infection involved. for fever naman tepid sponge bath lang, i only give paracetamol/acetaminophen if his fever is 38.5C or higher. it will also be helpful to always tell your child to wash her hands often (pati na rin kayo) para di mahawa si baby.

it is common in daycare that the kids are sick. nagkakahawaan eh. my niece in denmark is also going to daycare since sept of last year & recently she had a bout w/ colds accdg to ate.

when they went home here last oct till jan, ate bought vitamins for lil liza. i even told ate to buy natural meds and look for probiotics. ayun awa ng dios she is ok now.

she would often call me when her daughter is sick coz she's out of circulation na. her eldest is 14yrs old so sabi niya she needs guidance. basta i remind her to increase the fluid intake of my niece & give fruits all the time. and to put a lil oil on her chest kasi ayaw ng naka thermal wear un bata kasi madaling mainitan. vaporizer & muconase to use when clogged nose. for fever sponge bath no paracetamol unless high grade fever.

My son gets his daily dose of probiotics and fish oil to help boost his immune system.

When he is sick, I get this tincture from our ND (naturopathic doctor) that he calls children's glycerite. It's a mix of herbs and homeopathic remedies (I think it also has echinacea) that helps the immune system din. I also increase his vitamin C intake.
To relieve his colds, we use saline spray and/or homeopathic remedies (pulsatilla, allium cepa, etc, depending on his other symptoms) or minsan we just use the homeopathic cocktale by Hyland's (Sniffles and Sneezes).

Minsan talagang hindi maiiwasan na mangayayat sila dahil syempre walang gana kumain. I just push fluids though lalo na orange juice or breastmilk. I refrain from giving cow's milk when my son has colds.

We also don't usually medicate fevers unless na lang sobrang uncomfortable ang son ko. We usually try sponge baths or water therapy muna.

Preventative measures naman, the usual lang. Wash hands all the time. Syempre iwas din sa maysakit although minsan sa playgroups hindi maiiwasan talaga.

hay naku, yung panganay ko 2 days ang na missed nya sa school bec of on & off na ubo at sipon, then konting lagnat, parang wa epek naman yung binigay na flu shot sa kanila, saka ganon talaga sis pag nagpapalit ng weather, nakalakihan na rin yan ng anak ko,basta ganitong panahon, magkakasakit yan at least 3 days, usually binibigyan namin ng OTC(over-the-counter) medicine, but this time medyo tumagal,kaya ayun pinadoktor na namin kahapon, niresetahan ng antibiotic at mukhang ok naman,pero nirequesan na xray,babalik pa kami next week for the result.hirap lang kasi dahil kayo-kayo or in my case,kami-kami lang sa bahay at di makalabas, kaya madalas hawa-hawa na lang.

try mo rin sis,mag lagay ng indoor plants para kahit papaano to clean the air inside the house, kasi i assume na lagi sarado bahay nyo kasi sa lamig, at least pag may halaman,medyo clean ang air na naiinhale nyo.
Wala ba jan over the counter na chewable vitamins for kids, kasi sa US, ganon din sila,hindi nagpre-prescribe ng vitamins for kids, kesyo normal lang daw na hindi kakain ang kids for 3 days, syempre as parents freak out naman tayo non, kaya ako noon, hay naku binilhan ko na lang yung anak ko ng over the counter, yung flinstone candy vit.Painumin mo na lang din sya ng juice lagi.

nakaka-frustrate kasi i can't find that much help and support here...everytime i go out and look for 'healing' stuffs and vitamins sa pharmacy at health shops, everything is written in dansk and they don't understand/know what i'm talking about when i try to ask $:-\$ maski si hubs din--he will just tell me na i'm over protective at kids will get immuned to the virus naman daw

oh well, hindi naman sila ang nahihirapan lalo na at night! grrr

yung doctor naman namin (gen.practitioner at hindi pedia) lagi lang sabi na 'normal' lang yun and 'let the body heal on it's own'...panadol lang alam ireseta...

i don't want my kids to be dependent on medicines din naman kaya lang feeling ko mag-isa ako sa ere kaya i do my own research na lang and ask around here...

never ko pa na-try sa panganay ko ang nasal drops/spray...yun din sabi ng nurse sakin...pero medyo ok na yung panganay namin kasi lagi juice at water...i just wanna give her something to help her boost her immune system and appetite as well...

sis grumpybear,huckleberry at maribeth, wala pakong idea about homeopathic remedies but one time me nabasa ako sa bote na me echinacea...i hope madiscover ko kung san meron dito ng mga homeopathic remedies na yan...by the way yung fish oil ba is the same with cod liver oil? yun kasi ang nakita ko dito na merong available for kids...me OMEGA chenes na nakalagay dun sa label...sori kasi the rest in dansk na kaya di ko na maintindihan, nakakapikon lang magtanong kasi nga di sila familiar sa english terms...is it true ba na dapat i-alternate ang vitamins to be effective?

nakalimutan ko na pala i-follow up yang flu shots na yan kasi dito me sched sila ng shots, ewan ko if kasama na yun sa naibigay nila before...

sis fickleminded,merong over the counter na chewable vitamins for kids pero wala namang effect ke lia...besides mas palagay ako kung familiar ako sa iniinom niya at naiintindihan ko ang label. ang vitamin c pag-2yrs old pa pwede. oa sa mahal ng vitamins dito wa-epek naman ke lia...

me plants din kami sa loob ng house and minsan inoopen ko yung windows lalo na sa bedroom para mapalitan naman ng fresh air...

ngayon, may colds si baby. hirap nga... what i do is just increase yung water intake nya tapos pinapadede ko ng juices. increased vit c din - day and night. kanina sobrang tumutulo yung sipon nya kaya hindi ko natiis, pinainom ko na ng gamot. iritated na kasi sya kaka-sneeze at kaka punas dun sa nose nya.

Sis pag may sipon at ubo mga babies ko at pag gabi ubo ng ubo at hindi makahinga ginagawa ko nilalagyan ko ng vicks yung talampakan nila tapos memedyasan ko sila. It works all the time never siyang pumalya. Mga after a few minutes na ipinahid ko yung vicks sa paa nila eh ang himbing ng tulog nila at hindi inuubo for about 6 hours. Hindi ko alam kung bakit ganun pero it works eh, sabi ng mama ko ganyan din dawginagawa nya sa amin ng sis ko pag sinisipon at inuubo kami ng sis ko nung bata pa kami.

Atsaka pag barado ang nose naman pinapatakan ko bawat nostrils ng anak ko around 3-4 drops ng salinase (sodium chloride nasal drops) tapos saka ko sila papasingahin or i-susuction (pag sa baby),also keep them warm palagi lalo na pag may sipon, wag na mag aircon kasi nakakatuyo ng nasal passages yun eh.

Para sa ubo naman (eto ok lang ito sa more than 1 year old ha) nagpapakulo ako ng 2 lemons ( hindi hihiwain) tapos pag malambot na yung lemon yung tipong pwede ng pigain ihahango ko na sila tapos ilalagay sa isang maliit na saucer saka pipigain para lumabas ang juice nito, ididiscard yung remnant ng lemon after.yung juice na nakuha ko sa boiled whole lemon lalagyan ko ng half cup ng honey at hahaluin maigi(kung maasim sobra sa panlasa ng anak ko yung ginawa ko dinadagdagan lang uli ng honey. Tapos nun ilalagay ko sa malinis na glass bottle at ilalagay ko sa refrigerator. Ipapainom ko yun sa anak ko 5ml 3x a day hanggang sa mawala ng ubo.

Pag after 1 week persisitent pa din ang ubo eh dapat dalhin na sa pedia.

rehydration din para matunaw yung plema at madaling ilabas. Hindi lang maiwasan pag inuubo at sinisipon ang bata eh walang gana talaga kumain at dumede

Pag nilalagnat naman eh pinapainom ko ng calpol every 4 hours, at pag tumaas ng 38.5 na ang lagnat nila dolan na ang binibigay ko. lagi din akong may opalgesic suppository incase na sobrang taas ng lagnat nila. syempre tepid sponge bath kahit na napainom na ng gamot para madali diin bumaba ang lagnat.

^OO sis, dalhin mo na din as soon as possible, baka kasi kailangan na din nya mag antibiotics especially kung yellowish/greenish na ang plema o sipon nya. Mahirap na din lalo na pag matagal na ang ubo baka asthma/bronchitis/pneumonia na ang kalabasan eh. Yung vicks trick effective din sya actually sa adult

anak ko nga kahit walang sipon nagpapalagay ng vicks sa talampakan kasi sarap ang meme nya pag gabi daw

anong age youngest pwede gamitan ng vicks? naalala ko i grew up asthmatic kaya relief yang vicks at sanitary balm pagnilalagyan ako sa chest at likod nun...pagme sipon naman ako ginagawa ng lola ko nag.gigrill ng calamansi sa kalan at pipigain, yun ipapainom sakin...di ko lang matandaan if effective ba sakin... heheh...

and of course, the ever reliable vicks, ako sa likod at dibdib ko nilalagay para hindi nila masyado malanghap,pero yeah,it brings them comfort din,lalo na sa breathing.

pero hands up naman ako sa mga mommy dito, talagang mommy knows best! at hindi na kailangan umattend pa ng Harvard or Yale Med School,talagang proven effective ang mga home remedy

newmumi: naku sinabi mo pa. un niece ko natutong tumili dahil jan sa daycare. tapos lahat ng gusto binibigay nila kaya pagdating sa bahay hindi na maawat ng ate ko.

bumili si ate ng sandamakmak na growee & pedzinc. pag may sipon/ubo/allergies ang binibigay niyang vit is scott emulsion lang kasi taas ng vit c pati may cod liver oil un. everyday may probiotics siyang binibigay.

ingatan mo rin ang kids mo kasi asthmatic ka pala. the drastic climate change can trigger allergies

yes, the fish oil that i give my son is cod liver oil. But the one that I give him, they don't replenish the vitamin A that gets lost in the process, which I like, because I give him a multivitamin anyway. There is such a thing as vitamin A toxicity kasi so you have to be careful in the dosages too. Try to find a naturopathic doctor, kung meron dyan, because they're really knowledgeable in more natural methods of medicating illnesses.

i agree with probiotics. ever since after my daughter was hospitalized last oct, i placed her on probiotics. she doesnt get sick even though she was exposed to people who are sick. during the cold season, when viruses are all over siya lang ang hindi nagkasakit sa house

i give her as well honey every morning.

when she starts having sniffles, i give allergy relief immediately. it's a concotion of homeopathic meds like echinacea. it's available fr healthy options

it's a supplement that has live bacteria or yeast in it. These are good bacteria/yeast that sort of stabilize and maintaint healthy flora of our gut. If I recall correctly, I also read that the probiotics kind of stimulate our immune system in producing cells that protect us against harmful bacteria/viruses.

Yakult and yogurt would have probiotics in it but I still give my son a supplement that is in powder form. I don't like the high sugar content of yakult and yogurt because sugar promotes yeast in the gut so parang counter-productive.
