i guess the safest way to avoid getting sick and getting better soon after a sickness is to go natural... drink a lot of fluids, eat vegetables and healthy foods, take necessary adjustments as needed accdg to theclimate or weather, etc... like sipon, nagkakaroon tayo ng stuffy nose or dry throat becoz we dont drink water...

or you could also try raising plants with natural healing effects like oregano, basil, etc, including those beautiful flowers like jasmine... dito sa subdivision namin, kami yung maraming tanim na oregano, and madalas may nanghihingi ng leaves para daw sa ubo or asthma or something else... also, ginger or luya is very effective not only for the voice but also used as anti-inflammatory...

you live in a cold country so i would suggest those air ionizers/purifiers... i know this is something common in South Korea, yung parang nagpapa-usok sila while watching tv, etc... for vomitting, let the kid vomit as much, and for babies, dont let them take in any food/fluid for the next 30minutes just so their stomach will settle first... perhaps you could give water little by little (a teaspoon at a time) just to get rid of the aftertaste and also to replenish lost body fluid...

my suggestions here are directed to your situation as someone living abroad... i would suggest bringing the kid to the doctor when it gets too inconvenient na for both the child and the caregiver (parents or yaya)...

has anyone tried Oscillococcinum by Boiron's for treating flu-like symptoms?

yes.
my husband has tried it and says i's very effective.
our ND prescribes that to his patients at the onset of a flu.

hunny_ally, we've (my son nor I) never tried it. Fortunately, we've never experienced having the flu yet.

it's a supplement that has live bacteria or yeast in it. These are good bacteria/yeast that sort of stabilize and maintaint healthy flora of our gut. If I recall correctly, I also read that the probiotics kind of stimulate our immune system in producing cells that protect us against harmful bacteria/viruses.

Yakult and yogurt would have probiotics in it but I still give my son a supplement that is in powder form. I don't like the high sugar content of yakult and yogurt because sugar promotes yeast in the gut so parang counter-productive.

Sis grumpybear, what is the brand nung powder form? Is it available kaya sa philippines?

My daughter is taking Protexin Restore. It's formulated for infants and toddlers. medyo mahirap lang siya hanapin. not all mercury drug branches carry it. so far i was only able to buy it from the shangri-la, glorietta and medical city branches. it's about Php60 per sachet.

I just found Children's Oscillococcinum (Boiron).
I don't  know how different it is from the adult one. I'll check later.

Yung Probiotics ba need to be prescribed or OTC lang?

My son started going to nursery 1 month ago..after a week nahawa na sya ng cough & colds...on & off up to now. Ever since he was a baby bihira siya talaga magkasipon & if ever hindi tumatagal..only now that he is going to school na. Sobra din bumagsak ang katawan kasi wala siya maayos na tulog & can't eat well. He's always on the go, kahit pagod at antok na sige pa rin mag play at gusto lagi sumasama samin ng daddy niya pag umaalis. Laki ng pinayat niya :(

Kayo ba mga sis, pag may cough & colds ang kids niyo you still continue giving his vitamins aside from the medicine? Dito kasi hindi masyado nagbibigay ng vitamins sa kids eh. Kaya yung vitamins ng son ko, dito ko lang based sa GT forum, more so yun pa yung mga vitamins na pinapabili ko sa Pinas.

It's OTC and is available in health food stores/health foods section of the grocery store.

I don't give him iron if he is ill.

Bacteria thrives on iron so by supplementing him with iron, I could be supplementing the bacteria as well.
Since I don't know if he has a bacterial or viral infection, I err on the side of caution na lang.

^ didn't know that, thanks for the info.
Ask ko lang sis, how does your son respond to Probiotics? Do you give it to him everyday? Aside from that, do you give him multivitamins as well? At what age did he start taking it?

Yes, I give him probiotics everyday according to the dosage instructions sa packaging. I give him probiotics for children so I guess adjusted yung dosign for kids. I'm not sure how to answer the question re:response to probiotics since we use it for daily health maintenance. Wala naman kaming tini-treat but rather it is for immune boost.
I also started giving him multivitamins along with fish oil after a year old because he started nursing less. Nung madalas pa sya mag-nurse I didnt supplement at all because breastmilk is complete na.

My pedia advised not to give any vitamin/supplement while baby is on antibiotics.

^what i meant was vitamins and food supplements. sis yung microorganisms dun sa probiotics ba are not affected by the antibiotics? o parang yung probiotics ang nagrereplenish ng good bacteria na affected ng antibiotics?

there has to be at least 2 hours interval between the probiotic-antibiotic doses otherwise, the antibiotic will just kill the probiotics.
Yes, the probiotics will replenish the good bacteria that the antibiotic wipes out. This will prevent overgrowth of yeast and other bad bacteria that is otherwise controlled by the probiotics in our gut.
