Sis advise ko lang na ipa manage mo yung scoliosis mo kasi, it can really progress and it will result to chronic pain and other symptoms later.

^^chinita_eyes, i agree with mrs.S. mas mabuti kung magpa-consult ka sa isang orthopedic doctor. it's better knowing ilang degrees na yun curvature.

and always, always be conscious of your posture. iwasan ang standing and sitting for long periods of time. if you have to pick up something, instead of bending your back, bend your knees, as if you're going to squat. it puts less strain sa back. ;)

here's a little something on Proper Body Mechanics.

here's another: Body Mechanics.

exercising (Pilates, weight training. swimming daw is good. but, it's not my thing. ;D) has helped me a lot. but there are certain precautions to be done and some exercises promote back strain. exercise may not decrease the curvature per se, but it sure helps in stabilizing the back by strengthening our back muscles. :)

i have mild dextroscoliosis too...i think the curve is towards the right....i discovered it a few years back when i had my xray...so far mild pa lang naman...the doctor said it could be a result of my poor posture as a teenager...and favoring the right side in doing everything....

and yup i do have uneven hips....hassle nga because i get lower back pains when i wear high heels....and when i enrolled in one gym dati yung trainer nila isnt a PT so he would just give me a series of programs but in the end i think it hurt my back more...kase parang nag increase yung curvature niya....

now im enrolled in this gym where the trainers are all licensed PT's and i was checked out by the doctor before i was given a program...now all my exercises are for scoliotic people talaga...;D

Dextroscoliosis is a scoliosis with the convexity on the right side.
Levoscoliosis is a scoliosis with the convexity on the left side.

@sis mrs S & vixen, thanks for the advice. btw, do you know any reputable ortho doctor in manila area? better sana kung sa metropolitan or even chinese gen,  dito kasi ako malapit eh. or kung accredited cla ng medicard, hay sana its not something to be alarmed.. sana manageable pa or pwede makuha sa exercise.

pero like sis hoopchick, i also have an uneven hips.. yung parang nakaside sa right side.. tsaka pag ttignan mo sa salamin, yung right side ko may curve, sa left side wala  :( dahil din kaya sa scolio yun? o sadyang malaki lang yung waist ko kaya wala akong curve? hahaha..

^you're welcome sis. ;) re ortho doctor: wala akong kilala since i'm from Cavite pa.

anyway, ako din uneven ang curve ng waist. pero di super halata. and aside from that, my left rib is a bit protruding. oh well...

sis chinita_eyes, let me re-post the signs/symptoms again:
from Wikipedia entry on Scoliosis, here are the signs/symptoms:
    * Uneven musculature on one side of the spine
    * A rib "hump" and/or a prominent shoulder blade, caused by rotation of the ribcage in thoracic scoliosis
    * Uneven hip, rib cage, and shoulder levels
    * Asymmetric size or location of breast in females
    * Unequal distance between arms and body
    * Slow nerve action (in some cases)

so sis, kung may scolio ka, most probably yun ang dahilan kaya uneven ang waist mo. HTH

^Val, you have it din pala.  I do too.  Hereditary sya, my mom has it so me and my sister have it too.  I hope my daughter doesn't get it when she's older.

I wore a body brace when I was in high school but after 1 year I stopped wearing it.  Medyo malala yun scolio ko and I have back pain sometimes- pag too long standing up.  Wala lang, ayoko lang bumalik sa ortho or have an operation coz I've assisted in an OR for Harrington rod insertion, it was not a pretty sight.

i have scoliosis too. nalaman ko lang when i went to the ortho para mapatingnan sana kung bakit grabe yung backpain ko. nakita nalang sa xray ko that i have scolio. niresetahan ako painkillers tas regular rahab sessions. hot box, massage tas exercises yung rehab ko. pero tinigil ko na din kasi medyo mahal per session, P230. minemorize ko nalang yung exercises para magawa ko sa bahay ng libre. :)

^^^Nikki, i hope your daughter won't get it when she's older. it's hard enough living with back pain.

speaking of back pain, i've been having some these past few days. must be the weather? ???

re Harrington rod instrumentation: just the thought makes me cringe. :-[

^It's the post-op part that I don't like.  The pt. still has to wear a brace or cast for a few months then rehab.  Then there's also the long-term effects.  A % of those who had their operations  merong negative effects after 10 or so years that they have to remove the rod bec. of complications.  Tiisin ko na lang backpain kesa may mangyari sa akin.

nako meron din ako! :( just found out earlier. nag pa check ako sa Rehabilitation doctor in Asian.

nako mukangmay scolio talaga since hindi pantay ang shoulders ko pati pelvis. she prescribed oral meds muna then balik after 1 week with the xray na. then titignan kung bibigyan niya ko ng program for therapy.

ive been suffering for 2 years na siguro. grabe, ang sakit ng lower back ko hanggang sa "tumbong" part.lalo na pag long sitting. para ako lola pag tumayo. minsan pa yung pain, nag raradiate sa puson, kaya due to spasm, i pass gas more often. naeexperience niyo ba yun?

hot compress daw okay. kanina may pinrescribed na ointment sakin. pang remedy lang din. Voltren ata yun.

ang hirap nito, nakakainis. sobrang disturbed ako at minsan ayoko na lumabas because of back pains. i noticed din na sumsakit kagad likod ko pag naka shoulder bag ako. kasi nga nase-strain diba. even body bags actually.

pag tatayo din daw out of bed, wag derecho tayo. gumilid daw muna then saka tayo.

pag naka heels ba mas sumasakit ang likod? diba good posture nga yon? ;D

I have dextroscoliosis din 22 degrees. :( I only found out during my checkup for employment purposes. Nagpapa-xray ako every year to see if it got worse or namaintain lang. According to my doctor, hereditary daw yan and di na gumagaling. You can only prevent in from becoming worse by doing exercises.

girls, have you noticed when the weather's colder, mas pronounced ang back pain? :-X

ang hirap nito, nakakainis. sobrang disturbed ako at minsan ayoko na lumabas because of back pains. i noticed din na sumsakit kagad likod ko pag naka shoulder bag ako. kasi nga nase-strain diba. even body bags actually.

ganun din ako sis pag naka-shoulder bag. mas advisable na ilagay yun bag on the side where there is no curvature. like in my case, mahina talaga ang right shoulder ko kaya ang nagbubuhat yun left side.

if i'm not mistaken sis, wearing high heels can worsen back pain. mas nagwo-work kasi ang mga muscles natin to stabilize the body when you're in high heels. most of the time, i wear flats since i don't really need the added inches naman.

re pain relievers and muscle relaxants: i hardly take any. the pain is bearable naman eh. and besides, mahirap na din since may history ako ng acid reflux which can be aggravated by taking analgesics.

^^^charlottemarie, agree with you on the exercise part. pag nagiging sedentary ako, mas sumasakit ang likod ko. ;D

i have scoliosis too & 2 yung curve ng spine ko :(

i discovered mine when i was in my mid 20's na during an annual check-up from a health insurance. i don't know all about scoliosis then but i had already the symptoms with me since highschool as my ate always tells me laging tabingi daw lakad ko or ang likod ko. of course, i experience back pains but sa province kasi, pinapahilot lang pag may sakit. :) now, i don't want to know what's the angle of my scoliosis, as it's at 25degrees about 15 yrs ago. i know medyo lumalala na kasi napakapronounce na tabingi back ko and grabeng back pains na-eexperience ko lagi. and to top it all, just last month when i tried the bone density test, the result was i have an osteoporosis, tinalo ko pa ang biyenan who only had an osteopenia where bone mineral density is just lower than normal. so now, i had to take double calcium intake (drinking anlene + taking caltrate) para maagapan. sabi nga gelli de belen, ayokong lumiit. hehe... and by the way, scoliosis is hereditary din pala. it runs in the genes. i realize, i got it from my father. sobrang tabingi na position back nya. kaya if you have younger siblings, you better check their back condition baka maagapan pa ipapa-brace. :)
