i studied mandarin way back 2003 pa. nung kasikatan ng meteor garden sa berlitz. if i could remember it right mga 8k kami ng sister ko kasi one on one kami. kami lang ng sister ko tinuturuan. ok naman kaso di namin napractice. plan ko matuto daughter ko ng mandarin kasi plan ko sana sa chinese school sya magaral. maganda sana yung one on one para sa kanya. pero baby pa yung daughter ko. matagal tagal pa before ko sya paturuan. like ko din matuto ng french. magiinquire ako sa UP baka dun mura.

i actually trained here... most of their students are foreigners studying in DLSU or CSB... when i was there, even foreigners from LSGH were sent there to improve on their english skills...

Which university? ...Hmm, simplified or traditional characters? Self-study rin ako now. How do you do it?!

^ i studied at BLCU. because it's in beijing, we used simplified. although i still remember some of the traditional characters i studied during grade school and high school. haha!

re self-studying: im in the intermediate level na so it's a bit easier to do it. oftentimes, i listen to podcasts kasi mabagal na yung listening skills ko ngayon. i read short stories online din for reading comprehension, grammar and vocabulary. as for writing, matagal ko na di ginagawa yun kaya di ko na maalala yung iba kung paano isulat pero sympre alam ko pa rin pag binabasa ko.   ang mahirap nga lang about self studying eh to keep yourself interested, motivated and committed.

@silver_dust - wow how long were you in beijing? i went there for a short vacation in jan 2008 and practiced my pimsleur mandarin with some locals. they were saying i shuo de hen hao. buti ka pa you can read and write chinese characters!

i started studying october 2007 lang... no background at all. i listened to pimsleur and chinesepod. after 6 months, got a job here in taiwan. i did the 'qu nar' and 'yidiar' at first and people got annoyed at me "ni shuo shenme!!!". so i stopped practicing well, i've been here for 9 months and can understand conversational mandarin. i can't say any of it though ~ unless it's an emergency (i.e., got lost or i need to buy rice.) for writing traditional characters... give up na ko. i can write my name and my address. that's it. reading is ok - i've passed 500 characters based on my flashcard progress. i can type chinese characters using the pinyin keyboard but not the bopomofo or taiwanese methods. being here gives me no choice but to learn it!

you really need something to get you motivated noh? i think while i was studying mandarin on my own... i started listening to mandarin music. i also started watching taiwanese dramas (or kahit korean drama, i'd switch to mandarin dubbed).

here i buy materials for kids that has the bopomofo beside the chinese characters and english translation. oh, and i write emails to my colleagues in chinese... kahit they say it doesn't make sense

I really want to learn as many languages as much possible ever since..
I'm strongly considering it right now..
I want to learn Mandarin & Spanish first coz I'm part Chinese & Spanish..
Then French, German, Italian or Nihongo afterwards
As Ive read, these are the most recomended schools from our Girltalkers.. correct me if I'm wrong nalang..

Questions:
1. Do you have to be a student to study a foreign language in Ateneo, UP, La Salle?
2. Is the tuition fee per level basis? or its for all the levels na?
3. Do u have to be a college grad to be able to enroll to any of these schools/institutes?
4. Is it advisable to take more than one class / language at the same time para mas mabilis? Or nose bleed na sobra?

^Instituto Cervantes and Alliance used to have this program where beginner's level Spanish and French were taught at each other's schools. Hindi ko lang alam if that program is still in effect.

As for your questions #2, 3 and 4, tuition rates at Instituto Cervantes depends on what schedule you will be taking. You can see for yourself here. Instituto Cervantes also does not look at your educational background. I believe that's the same with Goethe and Alliance. That totally does not matter. I've studied at Instituto and at one point I had classmates who were 13 and 60+ years old, respectively.

Whether you want to take two or more language classes at the same time will depend on how fast you learn. You mentioned you want to learn Mandarin and Spanish first; there's no stopping you from taking them up at the same time, but do remember that you have to deal with a lot of verb conjugation (Spanish), a new set of alphabet and characters (Mandarin), and then reading and pronunciation exercises, so that may be too much.

Try doing it one at a time, or take up languages similar to each other, like Spanish and French or Spanish and Italian (although personally, I wouldn't combine Mandarin and Nihonggo at the same time--way too many characters!) Pero kung fast-learner ka na naman, eh di go lang sister!
