Millennials at Work
« on: July 13, 2016, 02:40:00 am »
Hi Guys!

Just wondering how you handle millennials at work.  They do have a different mindset about a lot of things.  It's like you have to explain every little thing to get them to understand why rules and policies have to be implemented.  On the brighter side of things, they are computer savvy so it helps especially with the paradigm shift in our workplace, we need people who are open to change.  Anyway, how do you motivate them to do better at work and to be more professional?  How do you make them understand things like asking them to make incident reports, feeling ko once they see na close na kayo if you ask them to make one its like mamasamain nila.  Hindi naman puwedeng walang any sort of documentation if there is a complaint no matter how small it is right?

I get you.

When it comes to explaining things. Yeah, napansin ko rin ganun sila. Parang lahat dapat may reason. I tend to not give reasons all the time when it comes to my decisions. I throw it pag importante lang talaga.

I think for long term employees medyo mahirap na baguhin ang work attitude. I guess, right after hiring, be clear with policies and be consistent to it.

Always strike a line between you and them at work. In my experience, if they feel you are their close friend na, they sort get a sense of power over you. They feel they can say whatever they want, suggest whatever they have in mind and expect you to do it, but be firm and have your reasons ready. If wala ka pa reason, say you'll think about the idea and then follow up through email.

If an employee can't follow, I will make sure it's reflected sa performance review.

I always ask for things through email. I don't send it as a request but as a task and saying when I need it.

For motivation, this is really hard. What we usually do is have meetings where we update them on all projects and the company's current status, plans and directions. Millennials always want to know what's up.

Another thing is encouragement. Mas preferred nila ang encouragement kaysa sa napagsasabihan, which is kind of correct rin naman pero I make sure I strike a balance. Pag palpak, I call it out pa rin but I tell them the "expectation".

Striking a "balance" I think is what's hard to begin with.  ::)  What industry do you belong to if you don't mind?

In a workplace of few people, it helps to know them on a personal level.  I'm just getting a little stressed, having to explain almost every new thing in the office.  May mga #hugot memes pa on their personal social media accounts that I just ignore.

Do not request, demand >> Gawin mo ito at ibigay mo sa ganitong araw.

Kung nakakastress ang pagexplain, subukan mo ipaisip sa kanila yung sagot ala "why do you think this policy exists? what is the purpose of having this rule?" tapos antayin mo kahit matagal nila maprocess. Patience is a virtue nga lang pero di naman kasi pwede spoonfeeding lagi. Hayaan mo magbrain exercise din sila haha!

I am 32 also and I supervise millenials at work.
Is it just me or they have this I-don't-give-a-Fkkk attitude?

I researched a lot about leadership, management etc but this batch, iba. Iba sila. Maybe I need more research, experimental ek ek on how to handle them better.
This is part behavioral talaga.

A few I hired, talaga yung matindi pangangailangan. I ask in a scale of 1-10 how much do you need this job and why
Of course anyone can give a generic response but that's when background check is for.

-Spoonfeeding to the max. Not willing to learn by themselves.
-Maikli ang pasensya, madaling mabore.
-Ang ikli ng tenure sa office. In less than a year, umaalis na. Sayang ang training sa kanila.
-Ayaw ng matrabahong tasks; super entitled. Di pwedeng manager kayo agad in less than a year of experience, jusko!

Ang edge lang nila ay yung pagiging tech-savvy nila, which is helpful ngayon na yun manual tasks ay inoautomate na. Pero ayun, I still have my reservations sa kanila... :o

After reading the posts above, napa-aray ako. Hehe.

Trust me. I am diligent and hardworking.

Why did I resign?

I confided to a GT lawyer na nasa forties na. She said kasali siya sa generation na kahit di na masaya sa work, mag stick pa rin. Traning ang habol nila at hindi salary. Mga millenials daw iba.

shines, i'm trying out the part where i let them do the thinking and solution finding whenever they do something that violates our policies.  It's still difficult to manage these youngsters i swear it's really getting into my nerves sometimes.

They like comparing also.  How come si ganito can get away with this, dapat ako din.  Magpaparinig about getting a raise pero naman, the business is not doing very well.  One sided?  I can't naman terminate everyone right?

alarming though i have some millenial pamangkins the others work well in the corp world meron ding iba  resign agad. i guess a few millenials know how to balance while those who practices mediocrity at work are the ones needed to be motivated.

There really is such a big difference on how they handle stress and how they see work in general.  It's hard to strike that balance with them mostly, and you should be thankful if they will stay for a year with you, because most often than not, they will leave before you can even say "warning".

At 28, millenial na rin ako. Nung una I feel so unhappy sa employment history ko. 2 years na ako sa profession ko pero i've been to 4 law firms already.

Pero narealize ko meron pa mga millenials na younger than me at mas malala pa. Dito sa current firm ko, marami na nahire na secretaries ranging from early twenties to mid twenties. Dios ko. Halos lahat di tumatagal because of heavy workload. Pinakasaglit 2 days at pinakamatagal 1 month.

I think Millenials have a sense of entitlement and they think they know it all.

Good advice to make them think.  Yun lang, you think better that we do this individually or as a group?

In our line of work, considered normal na makipagsiksikan ka sa divi pag may events or magcommute ka sa malalayong lugar. Konting hirap, resign agad.

Most of the millenials I've worked with are entitled and lazy. Most lang ha, not all. Ang tamad magresearch. They like cutting corners, not realizing the learning opportunities they're missing out.

And, grabe sila magdemand ng sweldo.

i'm in my mid-30s and i'm still considered a millennial. i love and support my generation. i think we put up with a lot of s**t because we were very much traumatized by the global recession.

We all put up to a lot of s**t.  Can't really blame the millennials since we were exposed to getting things fast and quick.   It was just a generational gap but now, everyone's well adjusted i think so all is well and good.  No more millennial jokes flying around.
