raw chicken: to wash or not to wash??
« on: July 12, 2016, 01:55:56 pm »
Hi ladies! Do you know that USDA advised against washing poultry since 2005?

Do you rinse your chicken before cooking or not? Please share your thoughts regarding the matter..

Even at my granny's house they still wash raw chicken kahit sa manukan pa nila or sa manukan ng cousins ko galing. Is there an explaination kung bakit bawal hugasan?

Sabi sis, it increases the risk of bacterial contamination. There are lots of articles about not washing the chicken..

Here's one article that explains why it's better not to wash the chicken..

^ i understand your reaction. it may sound foolish to not to wash the chicken.

I started this thread to raise awareness and to exchange ideas about the topic. Because according to recent studies, washing raw chicken is not advisable. This idea is not just from someone na di expert. It came from microbiologists and food science specialists so I think it might be noteworthy to consider this. Consider lang naman and not necessarily accept..

Oh well, siguro let's follow what works for us na lang hehe

My friend, who is a chef, also warned me against washing fresh chicken meat. Kaya what I do is I boil water, then dunk the chicken meat in there for just about a minute to kill the bacteria.

Thanks for the ideas of hot water washing. I was using just normal water to wash chickens.... It is really a good way to kill all the bacteria and other types of dirt.

nasurprise din ako sa subject because I didn't know meron na pala advisory/studies etc. Is this before you put the chicken on the fridge or before cooking or both?

Anyway, we buy fresh meats sa SNR which are already prepacked so we don't wash na before we put it in the fridge, but we still wash it before cooking.

But if hindi sya prepacked, we wash before we put on the fridge and before cooking.
