When is the time to cut family ties? Valid reasons?
« on: February 09, 2016, 07:31:21 am »
I grew up in a dysfunctional family. My dad was a womanizer. I for one have witnessed some of his "deeds" with other women. Whereas my mom is a miserable woman who loathes my dad. She stayed in their marriage daw dahil gusto niya yung tatay namin magpa-aral sa amin. The result was, they often bicker or fight in front of us, and my mom lashes out on us, her children. She has been through tough times as well during during her younger days. All throughout my childhood, she would remind us how "lucky" we are.

This is our childhood and current situation:

-2 of us "abused" by our maternal grandfather. (too vile to enter the details here). Me, for about 7 years total. My other sister, not sure how long. Because we used to live near our ancestral home.

Around 15-20 minutes that I'm often left with scars and wounds.

-my mom always reminds my younger sister na "pinapa-abort" daw siya dati, pero "nainis" daw siya doon sa doctor dahil hindi naman pala abortifacient yung pinainom sa kanya. So kapag nakukulitan siya sa sister ko when we were kids, she would often say that.

-she tells me the same. That I'm soo ugly, and that ako lang pangit sa amin. This is because I married against their advise. I was 28 when I married, on the peak of my financial success. And by the way, after I got married, even up to now, I still support them financially, even if they have money. I've given them millions, bought them cars, whatever they asked me and yet they call me walang kwenta and walang malasakit. To think they were mocking me, insulting me and saying hurtful words before I became successful. And never once did they ask if I needed help or whatever. I did it all on my own after I graduated. On my wedding day they ignored my husband's family and were even making side comments to other guests. And ang pinaka- the best, my mom kept lecturing me and telling me how negligent and ungrateful I was on the day itself.

-you will never win when you argue with her, even when she's OBVIOUSLY on the wrong side. My sister had a mild stroke when she gave birth and was asking for some consideration from her post-partum and she responds "Huwag ka mag-inarte. Isa pa lang inanak mo, ako tatlo. Alam ko lahat yan kaya tumigil ka"

-the WORSE. I was crying when I confided to her the abuse that HER FATHER/my grandfather has done to me for years, she looked like she could care less (I told her about 5 years ago). She even told my husband "Nangyari din sa akin yan. Normal lang na nangyayari yan. Di ko nga alam kung anong iniiyak niyan!"

I've had enough. Although I live very far from them, I've considered cutting ties with my parents. Sadly, I may be rich financially but family-wise, I'm like, penniless. I don't think my mom ever loved me nor my siblings.

By the way, my mom mentioned to my siblings that she's been planning to leave my dad.

I seldom answer back, seldom argue with them. Tinanggap ko lahat all the hurtful and demeaning words from them. Lahat ng sumbat, etc etc.

Although I've sought counseling, I also want to read your opinions. When is it time to cut ties with family members? What reasons are valid to do so?

Thanks.

So sad to hear about your childhood and having to go through all that (until now). hugs to you for being strong and for proving to yourself you can still have a normal life, and by what you described, successful life pa.

I think now is the right time to walk away,,actually it should have been years ago..while you were still single. No one deserves to be treated that way. I think your mother is psychologically challenged, most probably because of her childhood too and her husband. You have already stated MORE than enough valid reasons why you should just cut them off your life. Just forgive them in your heart and pray that one day magbago sila. Pray too that your heart will be healed from all this.

Take care sis. and always thank God that despite your unfortunate childhood, you were still able to get a second chance to have a better and peaceful life.

My heart goes out to you sis. All the traumas you experienced, the neglectful parenting you received, the emotional abandonment you`ve had. I am awed that you still keep on trying to stand firm and strong. And it`s good for you that you`re receiving counselling.

I am not sure why you are asking when is the time to cut family ties. Perhaps, you are desiring to sever your ties with them, yet you`re unsure and you`re also probably looking for a vote of confidence. Maybe the recurrent vote of yes here will strengthen your resolve.

Others may enumerate here the reasons why you need to cut ties, but along with that, I think you also need to address the reasons why you cannot sever the ties. Maybe you`re driven with guilt, especially with your mother pounding on your head that you will never be where you are if it was not because of her sacrifices. Also the  cultural message that family is family. Maybe deep inside of you, you`re still yearning for your mother to change and be a good mother. You`re still yearning for her love.

If I am in your shoes, this will be a very difficult decision to make. Ideally, is yes, you need to set your boundaries and protect yourself. And if it can be only done by cutting ties, then that`s it. But then again, this isn`t a black and white situation, your emotional yearnings and the guilt might be at play in your decision making. The right time, I guess, is when you are emotionally empowered, when you accepted the fact that they`re never gonna change, and that your mom will never be able to love you the way you deserve to be loved. You`ve had your more than enough of emotional, physical, and mental abuse to let go already.

When you feel like you've given your all yet nothing improves, it's time to walk away.

Protect your sanity and focus on the love within your own family.

Sis, madami ka ng valid reasons to sever ties with your family. I think now is the right time. Life is too short para mastress ka sa mga taong toxic.

Nakakalungkot naman ang kwento mo TS.Dapat  our own family pa nga ang security blanket natin or takbuhan pag may problema and all pero in your case mismong family mo pa un may kakaibang ugali... and ang sad non ah - ang alam ko kasi mothers should protect their kids kahit na tumanda na sila at magkaroon ng sariling families. Plus the abuse that happened saiyo when you're young plus un reaction ng mother mo when you told her... sobra na iyon and para saakin valid reason na iyon to build walls and set boundaries talaga. :(

If you're mom keeps on saying na siya ang dahilan bakit kayo napagtapos etc and nagtitiis siya sa father ninyo.. choice niya yon. Don't carry the burden TS dahil sa lahat ng pinagdaanan mo up to now sobra sobra pa sa pasakit..

Hugs and always pray lang TS.

TS, I'm not sure san ka kumukuha ng lakas after what you've been through.

If I'm in your shoes, matagal na siguro ako umalis. Sometimes kasi you need to be away from all these negativity. You need to step back, recharge, gain energy at tsaka ka nalang ulit humarap sa kanila once you're ready.

if you feel like walking out, magpahinga ka muna from them, so be it.  Take your time. You deserve some peaceful and positive surroundings naman after everything.
You cannot say you're totally cutting ties. Di natin masabi ang panahon. Malay mo magbago sila. Miracles happen.

So suggestion ko, walk out if you need to. Just disappear for awhile. Kung ready ka na magpakita, or if ever that time ever comes, then magpakita ka. But don't ever tell them that you're cutting ties. Need mo ba magpaalam, di naman di ba?

Thank you for your replies and well wishes, dear sisters.

TS, I'm not sure san ka kumukuha ng lakas after what you've been through.

^That makes two of us, because I'm not sure too. I've been through a lot, even had marital problems where my husband had an affair.

Yes, I thrived. I survived. But underneath this strength, this facade that I have -- my biggest fear is not knowing whether or not  I'll eventually crumble or be shattered into pieces in the end. That is something that I'm still trying to prevent from happening and I'm praying not to happen. Because at the end of the day, I'm only human. And I always thank God for I believe He never abandoned me. He is my rock.

How I wish sometimes na sana, hindi ko na pinagdaanan lahat. But I also believe that, as we are all imperfect beings, sad/evil/unfortunate things can happen in our lives. It is what it is. That's how imperfect life here on earth is. So I learned how to focus and stay strong and hurdle every unfortunate event in my life.

Hi po. I'm just a newbie. I have the same issues with family. Mother is not so nice. She is very partial and she used to hate me when I was young reason why I had to stay with her parents who are nice and kind enough to send me to school. I tried my best to please her and it always cost me so much to please her. It cost me financially and emotionally. I had to work for all of them. Well I came from a big family which means that I have a lot of siblings to put to school. I sent all of them to school and I tried to extend the help to my mother's kamag anak who are so ungrateful. I hate to say but mother likes to brag too. You know the humblebrag na kunwari wala pero bigla bigla she will give away money and stuffs to the people in our neighbourhood then later on she will whine for money again. She is so selfish and so thus my other stepsistersstepsisters who are older than me. They are social climbers and I always suffer every time nagprepretend silang meron. Just like my eldest sister, we were not in good terms for seven years and when we kissed and made up, kc nga feeling ko i have to forgive everybody kc i feel so blessed naman. Then this eldest sister of mine wanted to get married and she is asking for money again saying i need to help because i have the capacity to help which is not nice because they were thinking that I will never run out of money kc bf is a white man. Ang dami pa nilang hinihingi like car, house, etc. Minsan nga naiisip ko, they are just after the things that they can get from me. Nakakagalit talaga lalo na kc i am doing everything i can to extend the help naman yun nga lang hindi naman pati yung mga luho sana. I told my sister if she cannot afford to marry in church then better marry in a civil ceremony and then she acted like a dramatic actress who cried and said i don't understand what she's going through. Kaya i am still working and doing all i can to live comfortably. Isa pa yun my bf and I wanted to get married but mother is against the idea saying hindi nya daw tanggap ang ibang lahi. I tried to revive the farm that grandfather gave pero wala nagyari.

Yes, it's time to cut ties.

I know sobrang hirap dahil may guilt factor, but we have to do it for our survival and peace of mind. They are dead weight. You need to cut them off so you can live beautifully, at hindi kasalanang gustuhin mo yun para sa sarili mo.

You need to stop the cycle for your sake, and most importantly for your kids if you have any. It will take all of your resolve so prepare yourself. Long uphill battle, but trust me, it's awesome to be far away from their negativity.

sis @ayka, you were featured in Smart Parenting (about cheating husbands) which gave me the link to your profile.

I salute you sis.  You're one of the best example of a strong lady.  I think after what you've been through under your parents' "care", it's time to let go of them.  Hug your sister sis.  Make her feel that she has you and make her feel you also need her.  Do not cut your ties with her.  Lumayo na kayo sa nanay niyo.  She's no good for you.  And maybe you're not good for her.  She might also be better off without you guys (saying that just to make you feel a lot less guilty) since she only feels hate for you and your sister.  Do her a big favour and get out of her life.  Don't even look back sis.  Create your own future na from this point of your life.  You have given so much already.  Not talking about the material things but the love and respect she didn't deserve from you.  You are actually what she says you are, parang wala lang.

Good luck sis to you and your sister.  You guys have been through a lot.  Spend the rest of your life happy without your biological mother.  God has taken care of you and kept you safe while you were under her "CARE".   Focus on the people who actually cared for you and has given you so much happiness and helped you survive.

im fine!

I am changing my answer.  LOL!

You're like the extreme situation of my mother.  And until now, she is fully supporting my grandparents.  They're not as crass as your mom (sorry sis, I just hate what she's doing to you) but they didn't treat her as lovingly as parents should.  She's also have problems with most of his siblings. She sometimes cry and say how tired she is.

Your mother may be your cross to take.  Pinasan mo na sya after ilang years.  Wag mo na lang siyang bitawan.  Just don't expect that the weight will lighten.  I don't really know if your mom will change.  Just stay away from her while partially supporting her (not fully since you have to support your own family and YOURSELF).  Maybe let go of her mentally (for your sanity).  Don't mind her words anymore.  You are probably scarred for life but wear those scars with pride.  Don't be ashamed of how she was to you before.  The best thing would be make her ashamed of how she treated you by not treating her back the same way.

By now, we should be in the stage of acceptance.  There is nothing you can do for her.  You still have your sister.  Take her away from your mother.  I think you already are a survivor.  Help your sister survive your mother too.  Focus on her, instead of focusing on your feelings towards your mother.  Set her as a goal.  And then set another one after that.  Your mother shouldn't be in your mind anymore.  Help your mother if she needs help but don't give her a chance to speak to you and your sister like before.

I'm not in your situation and I couldn't be sure how hard or easy it will be.  Hopefully, it works out for you.

Your situation is not easy. But you have to be firm with your decision. Maybe its not easy for you. Pero it's the best way for you to cut your family ties. It's no longer healthy if you keep on staying in that situation. Move away, and start Anew.

Sis, nakakalungkot naman story mo. Buti na lang matapang ka. If you feel that the situation would get better if you cut your communication with your parents, maybe thats the best thing to do. Pero sis, if time will come na kailangan ka nila, I hope you can still forgive them.

IMO the right to the title "parents" is earned. For me hindi enough na basta mag-anak para matawag na "magulang."

And hindi porke "magulang" sila at "anak" ka lang, kailangan mo silang patawarin kahit anong ginawa nila sayo just because you're unfortunate enough to be their children. I will advise TS to forgive eventually, but not because they're her parents, but for her own peace of mind.

I sound very coldhearted I know.

^ i agree

just like my half brother who abandoned his wife (passed away na) and their 3 kids..as in, he turned his back and no support nor care at all. oo mas okay patawarin ng mga pamangkins ko in their heart when the right time comes..but to go to him and take care of him kapag tumanda na ng dahil lang "he is still the father" ay hindi na uy..because he is not worth it, after he abandoned them for good

^^ Well said.

Gusto ko talaga yan mawala sa culture natin like you said.
