Hi first time owning a toy poodle here.

I want to more about this kind of breed. So let's share infos, tips on how to care and maintain these adorable little ones.

I have one male apricot toy poodle named Ruu. He's 2 and a half years old already. He's not the first dog I've ever had but he's definitely the first one I bought and personally took care of so he's spoiled and has attitude problems (sad to say) but because of him, I learned so much about pet care and I wish I could have given my older pets (who passed away) the same love and care I gave him.

I decided to get a new dog after Dokyunko, my most loved dog, was murdered by our drug-addict neighbors. I was initially planning to get a labrador retriever because Dokyunko looks like a mixed labrador and I love big dogs but my mom and sister are both a bit apprehensive of having a big dog inside the house (all of our past dogs weren't allowed inside the house). My sister wanted a toy dog so I gave in and after going through toy dog selections, I opted for a toy poodle because poodles are the 2nd most intelligent and highly-trainable dogs. I got him for P9,500 (he was the most expensive from the litter at that time because he was the smallest) at Sulit from Arthur Mendoza, a poodle breeder. He has a birth certificate, contract and came with a basket, vitamins, bowls, towels, etc.

Taking care of a dog is no joke and I took it very seriously. When I'm not at home, I assign a maid to specifically look after him and I always leave a fan on because he might feel hot because of his fur. Also, I tend not to extend my vacations too long (maximum of a week) because I can't bear the thought of being away from my babies for such an extended period of time and I make sure to check them in a reliable pet hotel (downside: expensive) just so I can have a peace of mind that they will be safe.

We have a three-month old toy poodle named Lychee. Kasama niya sa dito sa house yung 1.4 months old shih tzu ko, okay naman sila. Both boys so super lilikot. The poodle in particular masyado siyang maharot, pero puppy pa lang naman so we understand.

What we've noticed with him though is super lakas niya kumain. We feed him three times a day pero PG mode siya lagi. Pati dog food ni shih tzu gusto niya kainin so separate sila ng feeding time.

^ Sis per feeding time around 5-7 tablespoons siguro pinapakain namin sa kanya. Di na nga namin binababad sa water para mas matagal niya kainin. Lol Vitality yung dog food niya.

Wow! Anlakas kumain ng poodle mo sis! Samantalang poodle ko halos 7tbsp lang. buong araw na yun ha. Tig 3 tbsp. Sapilitan pa. Minsan sinusubuan ko na para lang kumain. Napakain ko kase ng table food naging picky eater tuloy. Acana dog food naman diet ng aken. 30-60grams lang naman suggested sa feeding guide. Tapos siguro 3-4 kilos lang poodle ko... Super gaan at pag kinalbo talagang ang payat. Hayst... Nalulungkot ako kase mukang diko sya pinapakain sa weight nya... Ay oo nga pala sis mamaya (july 19) 4-6pm may get together ang poodle club philippines sa moa seaside malapit daw sa vikings. Baka member ka din. Baka magkita tayo dun or if dika member pwede ka parin pumunta. 1st time ko din aattend. Hehe. Gusto ko makahalubilo naman ng kapwa nya poodle si kisses ko. Hi sis! Sabi ng breeder ng toy poodle ko. Hindi daw talaga malakas kumain. Pero hindi ko pa din kase na e-experienced kase wala pa sya sakin. Excited na ko, this July 25 makukuha ko na sya. 2 mos pa lang kase sya.

Yep sis. Sabi din ng breeder ng poodle ko sis tipid daw talaga. Monthly expenses nya daw sa bawat toy poodle nya is 300-400php. I think na sa 20 poodles nya. And good thing about toy poodles daw hindi daw maamoy? Totoo ba to sis?

Pero super saya. 1.5years old na poodle ko. Female din. Kisses name. Pinanganak syang red toy poodle tsaka sa papers nya red talaga kaso naglighten color nya parang apriot/light beige na. Hehe. About sa amoy sis. Diko sure kase yung aken dapat atlis once a week paliguan kase bumabaho sya unlike sa spitz ko na once a month lang paliguan at never nagkaamoy as in amuy baby. Kahit siguro half year di maligo spitz ko di yun babaho. Natry ko na umabot sya ng 2 mos na walang ligo tapos pag winalk ko napagkakamalan padin na bagong ligo. Yung poodle sis mabilis umamoy tenga nila kaya kapag ikaw magroogroom need mo hilahin yung buhok sa tenga nila. Ansarap ng may poodle kase para kang may baby talaga. Super harot nya. Tsaka yung aken di tumatahol sa strangers. Katakot baka sumama pa yun kahit sa magnanakaw. Hehe. Tinatahulan nya lang yung spitz ko pag hinaharot nya. May iba kapa bang dogs sis? Matipid sa food pero magastos sa grooming kase prone sila sa buhol buhol na balahibo kaya dapat lage suklay ng suklay....

Honestly sis, first time. As in.  Kaya super iba yung feeling. Excited na din baby girl ko kase for her din talaga yung toy poodle. Aww bumili ako buds for the grooming sis. Pano yung hiilahin balahibo ba sis sa tenga?

magagamit mo padin yung buds sis pansungkit sa earwax pero need talaga bunutin yung buhok sa loob ng tenga... pwede ka magpaturo sa groomer or vet... mejo nakakatakot sya bunutin kase tumutubo talaga sya sa loob ng tenga... ah uu. iba yung feeling pag first dog congrats sis sa magiging first furkid mo

My baby is also picky with his food (he wasn't like that when he was still young). His food has always been Beef Pro Puppy, then I changed it into Holistic (not sure), and that's when he started being picky. I changed it back to Beef Pro Puppy but he didn't revert to the way he was before. Since then, we only feed him once a day at nighttime in a small bowl. Sometimes he finishes it, sometimes he doesn't. When I had him neutered a few months back and changed his diet to Beef Pro Adult, he ate a lot (though still once a day) but when I came home from my one-week travel, he doesn't finish his bowl anymore. My baby has food-guarding issues since I brought home new babies and it never went away. He only finishes his bowl when threatened.

Unfortunately, my baby really smells a lot. The usual dog smell. Plus, he has halitosis so I don't kiss him on the lips and he has pica.

Yup, you really have to get him groomed and brushed on a regular basis. Plus, you need to pluck out the hair inside the ears because moisture can get trapped thus causing ear infections. You can watch Youtube videos for instructions then watch the groomer doing it in person so that you'll know. So far, my baby has been a very sickly one. He has a lot of recurrent ear infections and it's a pain giving him otic medications because he bites. Also, he has had numerous skin infections (hot spots). And to think that I'm very particular with his care and I avoid getting him dirty. He wears shoes when he goes outside the house to potty and is just limited to our garden. I don't take him to walks because I'm afraid he might catch some disease since he's very prone to infection.

^Hi sis..  I don't have a pet but have been thinking of getting one and my first choice for now is a miniature poodle.   I've been reading about this breed and from what I've gathered, poodles hardly smell.. I went to forums too and found out factors that may cause them to smell and have halitosis:
Food that contains grains
Teeth/gum problem
Ear infection
Kidney problem
Skin problem
Anal gland problem
Poodles fur easily absorbs the smell of their surroundings, so dog maybe carrying the smell from his/her former place?  If it's the case, the smell will gradually go away after a few baths.
Sis..did you get your fur baby from a breeder? Or did you adopt?   The downside to rescuing is most likely the new owner vaguely knows the history of the dog's behavior and health issues but I'm sure the reward of giving love to a helpless soul more than compensates the imperfections that come with it! ☺

^sis sa experience ko may ibang amoy talaga ang poodle kaya atleast once a week ang bathing. prone din sila sa ear infections. sis megumii, si kisses nagkaear infection din when she was a puppy. sa 1st vet nya reseta sa kanya ilium. after 2weeks na treatment nya meron paring smell sa ears nya kaya dinala ko sya sa congressional animal clinic. may shinot silang green liquid sa magkabilang tenga nya at nilinis talaga nila yung ears nya tapos pinacontinue yung ilium sa ears. simula nun di na bumalik yung ear infection nya. careful talaga dapat din sa pagbathe sa kanila na wag pumasok yung tubig sa ears nila. tsaka after maligo tinataas ko yung ears nya para matuyo agad. high maintenance ang poodles when it comes to grooming. twice a day brushing talaga dapat. or atleast once a day. kase pag di talaga nasusuklay talagang buhol kung buhol tapos kahit groomer isasuggest na kalbuhinnalang kaya tyaga talaga dapat sa pagbrush ng fur if poodle mom ka. ako sis binili ko talaga dog ko sa breeder. but if you could find one na pwede irescue okay din yun. kase ang kagandahan sa pag-adopt ng older dog ay what you see is what you get. madalas kase poodles have fading color. naglalighten kulay nila pag tumatanda. like sa case ni kisses. pinanganak na red tapos ngayun apricot na. ang di lang nagbabago color is yung white and black tlg. tapos pag older dog din kung anung temperament nya yun na yun. natetrain naman sila. tsaka iba daw magmahal rescued dogs though iba naman talaga magmahal ang dogs talaga. hehe. pero mas malambing "daw" yung mga ganun.
mukang di lang ako ang may problem sa picky eater na poodle ha. hayst...

Every time na papaliguan ko sya. Buds ko sya sis? Waah. Bubunutin pala literal yung hair sa loob. Hindi sya nasasaktan sis? Mga what age kaya to gagawin sa kanya? Thank you sis. Konting tulog na lang makukuha na namin sya. By the way sis, mukhang hindi ganun ka curly yung poodle ko. Is it normal kase newborn sya? Or kukulot din talaga sya? Sabi ng breeder pa groom trim daw ng pa trim.
