The doctor who claimed the link between autism and the MMR vaccine admitted that he faked the study and his medical license was revoked.

It seems that because these diseases rarely occur (thanks to vaccinations) people don't seem to take it seriously.

You cannot say that it is a family decision NOT to vaccinate your child because then your child becomes a potential carrier for those who are immuno-compromised-such as newborns, babies too young to get the vaccine, the elderly, people who are undergoing chemotherapy. Vaccinations work only if everyone gets vaccinated -it's called herd immunity. The moment people stop vaccinations - the disease will begin spreading.

And these diseases? They are highly contagious and some even before any symptoms appear so no proactive measure on your part will help. Fine, if you choose not to vaccinate your child, then live in a bubble - live in a community where no one is vaccinated. Do not put innocent others at risk.

Still don't believe it's true? Read about the stories of newborns who have died of pertussis (whooping cough) or the one month old who died of measles because she watched her sibling's Christmas program.

The incident in Disneyland came from ONE unvaccinated adult. Imagine what would happen if more and more people do not get vaccinations.

I applaud the schools and doctors who turn away families who choose not to vaccinate their children. Sana the same practice is done here. Again, if you don't want to vaccinate your child, then that's your decision, but you and your children should be isolated from everyone else.

Individual shots narin kami. From what i read dr. Andrew Wakefield does not propose you do not get vaccinated but dapat daw individual shots instead of those 3 in 1 or 5 in 1 vaccines.

Are these individual shots widely available like those x in 1s? I will discuss this further with my pedia.

Since my cousin is a pedia we all got our shots from her, so i was confident i was complete with my immunization. My mom was too. She said she was sure i got those shots. During my pregnancy it was also the time where there was a rubella (german measles) outbreak around the metro. My Ob asked me to have my blood checked if i have been immunized, turned out negative. So imagine nalang how scared i was. I barely went out of the house. We went to the states and i just sighed in relief then nagkaroon din ng scare sa California a few days before i left. It was so hard to live in fear, i feared for the child i was carrying. Buti hindi ako nahawa. Now i got MMR shots again because i do not want to live in fear anymore. Super bastos naman kasi ng ibang tao, pag na expose sila pa mall mall pa, nag disneyland pa. Kainis! Nagkakalat ng lagim!

I think some here don't get Scubadoobidoo's point. He's not saying naman na we should NOT have our kids vaccinated. His point is about the side effects of those x in 1 vaccines. If you'll read his original post, he said he want his kid vaccinated pero paisa-isa (instead of those x in 1s).

Baby ko kumpleto naman ang vaccine, and she had the x in 1 types. She's healthy. Tatanggalin naman siguro sa market kung may bad effects talaga yang mga vaccines na yan.

Plus, the pedia of my baby is my pedia too nun bata pa ko, as well as my siblings. We call her the Lola Pedia. So trusted talaga ng family. Unlike sa mga social groups sa FB na hindi ko naman alam kung licensed ba talaga mga tao dun.

David Kirby, the author of the Huffington post article is a known anti-vaccine supporter, just like Jenny McCarthy and Andrew Wakefield. I hope you went beyond reading the article penned by David Kirby and did a search on the case of both Ryan Mojabi and Emily Lowrie, the children mentioned in the article. There are many articles available that provide further insight with regards to the 2 cases. In the case of Emily Lowrie, an article cited that she was actually found to have periventricular leukomalacia, a congenital condition (congenital means present at birth) and is said to be a risk factor for developing ASD. Ryan Mojabi was also said to be examined by doctors in Iran where he went after getting vaccinated and several other doctors/specialists in the US and was found not to have ASD. It is possible that he developed encephalitis, but that it is not linked to ASD.
Were there vaccines linked to encephalopathy? Yes. Several years ago, the whole cell pertussis component of DTwP was linked to febrile seizures, irritability and encephalopathy which is why the acellular component was developed. The acellular component of pertussis is the one found in most 5 in 1 and 6 in 1 vaccines.
The risk of getting encephalopathy from vaccines is rare compared to getting encephalitis from an actual viral infection. In fact, vaccines are given to decrease the risk of complications such as encephalopathy/encephalitis. If a child less than 1 year of age developed measles, there is a high chance he might get Subacute sclerosing encephalitis or SSPE. This disease shows up later in life (around 7 to 8 years of age) with development progression later leading to debilitation. There are also a lot of cases of varicella or chickenpox infection leading to encephalitis later on.
These are the single or mono vaccines available:
BCG
Hepatitis B
Tetanus toxoid
Polio
Rotavirus
Pneumococcal vaccine
Measles
Hepatitis A
Varicella vaccine
Typhoid
Meningococcal vaccine
H. Influenza type B vaccine
Influenza vaccine

Combination vaccines include:
Measles - Rubella vaccine (MR) the one given at the health centers at 9 months
Measles - mumps - rubella vaccines (12 to 15 months and 4 to 6 years of age)
Measles - Mumps - Rubella - varicella
Diphtheria - pertussis - tetanus vaccine
Diphtheria - pertussis - tetanus - h. influenza type b - polio vaccine (5 in 1 vaccine)
Diphtheria - pertussis - tetanus - h. influenza type b - polio - hepatitis b vaccine (6 in 1 vaccine)
Diptheria - pertussis - tetanus - h. influenza type b - hepatitis b vaccine (the 5 in given at local health centers)
Diphtheria - pertussis - tetanus - polio vaccine (4 in 1 vaccine that may be given as the 2nd booster at 4 to 6 years of age)

If you give only mono vaccines, then how about protection against rubella and mumps? How about the DPT? It has long been proven that combination vaccines do not lead to more side effects or risk compared to mono vaccines. Even the local health centers who give the government recommended vaccines have been giving 5 in 1 vaccines and MR vaccines for the past 2 years now. These vaccines are provided by the World Health Organization.

With regards to those who are saying that vaccines should be given at a later age of life when the immune system is more developed, it is precisely the fact that the child still has a developing immune system and needs help with protection against diseases as to why they need vaccines at a particular age. Age recommendations are based on when the maternal antibodies start to wane or disappear. Antibodies for pertussis, diphtheria, tetanus, h. influenza type b, rotavirus, polio and pneumococcal infections disappear fast or are poorly transferred during pregnancy which is why it is recommended that the 1st dose should be given by 6 to 8 weeks of age. The 3 primary doses should be completed by 6 months of age because it is at this time when maternal antibodies are very low. Haven't you noticed that at 6 month of age, your baby gets more sickly? This period of low antibody protection usually last until 2 years of age which is why it is very important that primary doses are completed before maternal antibodies disappear. There is immunologic basis for the need for vaccines at this age and not at a later age. For your information, the immune system only gets fully developed at 7 years of age. That is also the reason why previously sickly kids get better by age 7.
It takes several years for vaccine development. It goes through 4 phases of research and there is also post vaccine surveillance. If it was just that easy to release a vaccine, then we would have vaccines against malaria, dengue, SARS, MERS, ebola, etc by now. The dengue vaccine has been on its' last phase for the past few years. It has been 15 years since they started to develop it.
Andrew Wakefield, the one who started the anti-vaccine movement was found to have falsified results in his MMR - autism study which was why he was stripped of his license in the UK. He also had conflict of interest during the study because he was developing a mono - measles vaccine at the time he was doing his MMR - autism study. He was against MMR because it would go against his own Measles vaccine.

I agree that parents should be informed about vaccination but please do proper research. Go to the CDC and ACIP websites. Do not depend on testimonial evidence. Know the background of the authors. Do not be afraid to discuss your fears/qualms with your pedias. Report side effects such as fever and irritability. Be upfront about family history, especially cases of epilepsy, neurological conditions, etc. Prepare for your pedia appointments. Ask for the box and insert of the vaccines so you can read up on the vaccine being given to your baby.
Vaccines prevent diseases. It saves lives. Our aim is to eradicate disease. Have we not learned anything from the recent measles outbreak?
It is good that a lot of schools are getting pro-active about vaccination and asking for a list of immunizations prior to school entry.

Yup i did research about it. Read tons of articles about it including the court judgment awarding the damages for the victim. (Both in vaccine court in US and the one in italy) Also talked to our pedia and she says we can do mono daw. Hassle for us lang which we really dont mind.

Here is one of those other article i came across: http://articles.mercola.com/sites/articles/archive/2012/06/25/mmr-vaccine-caused-autism.aspx

Dr. Mercola is a known supporter of Andrew Wakefield.

http://www.quackwatch.com/11Ind/mercola.html

With regards to the Valentino Bocca case, I hope you were able to read this as well:

http://www.skepticalraptor.com/skepticalraptorblog.php/italian-mmr-autism-decision-overturned/

As stated:
"On February 13, 2015,  a Court of Appeals in Bologna overturned the decision–a decision that apparently lead to a decline in MMR immunization rates in Romagna, an historical district of Italy.

The Court of Appeal accepted the appeal filed by the Ministry of Health (ministero della SanitĂ ). The expert appointed by the court of appeal highlighted that there is no scientific evidence supporting a link between vaccines and autism. The expert highlighted that the lower court expert was wrong to rely on the study by Andrew Wakefield, a study debunked and rejected by the scientific community."

Yup. Read both sides of the vaxxers and anti vaxxers. What worries me is may award for damages sa US already. And the scary part is even those who say is that those vaccines are safe cannot guarantee it 100% and further study and research is needed. That alone gives me pause. We have decided single shots nalang even if it might be more expensive. We dont want to gamble with our baby. Even our pedia cannot guarantee walang side effects ang X in 1 vaccines. It is a medical fact vaccines have adverse side effects. Even my friends from GSK told me that.

Also look up the causes of encephalitis on the website of Mayo Clinic. They clearly state that exposure to live virus vaccine can cause that condition on rare cases.

It is a medical fact that all medications, whether synthetic or herbal, has adverse reactions in the form of side effects or allergic reactions. There is no medication that has no side effects and no one can guarantee 100 % safety. That is asking for the impossible.
Even something as "safe" as probiotics can turn pathogenic in an individual with a compromised immune system and cause invasive infections such as those with cancer or with cardiac catheters or feeding tubes. Several studies, though, have shown how important probiotics are in strengthening the immune system and in preventing allergies if given as early as infancy. So do we stop giving probiotics to our kids because of the rare chance that these good bacteria will turn pathogenic and cause disease?
Study after study have shown that mono vaccines carry the same rare risk of adverse reactions as combination vaccines. Live vaccines may pose more increased risk of adverse reactions compared to passive vaccines. Yes, but , the chances of serious adverse reactions developing from a live virus vaccine, however, is very rare compared to getting exposed to someone with Rubella or your kid stepping on a rusty nail.
As several sisses here said, the benefits of protection far outweigh the risks.

Vaccines aren't scary. Diseases are. Imaging getting exposed to someone with Rubella while pregnant. Wouldn't you be scared that your child will have Congenital Rubella syndrome?

It's scary also that there are still a lot of people who believe and support Andrew Wakefield even though he was found to have falsified his study results to favor his anti-vaccination stance. Because of him, diseases that were already disappearing started coming back. Sabi nga sa isang article, Andrew Wakefield created the greatest medical hoax of all time and yet a lot of people believe him.
If you had read the vaxxers side, then, may I ask why you did not pose the decision over-ruling the earlier damage grant? The Italian court case highlighted the fact that not all vaccine court rulings are correct. Many rulings were earlier influenced by the Wakefield study.
A lot of vaxxers have given important insights on vaccine court rulings such as in the case of Ryan Mojibo or Emily Lowrie, but the articles posted in this thread are from the supporters of Andrew Wakefield.
This is the Mayo clinic article on causes of encephalitis:

http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/encephalitis/basics/causes/con-20021917

As stated:
" Common childhood infections — such as measles (rubeola), mumps and German measles (rubella) — used to be fairly common causes of secondary encephalitis. These causes are now rare because of the availability of vaccinations for these diseases. "

For parents who choose not to vaccinate or who choose selective vaccination, I hope that you will be responsible enough not to let your kids go to school or go to crowded places such as the mall or activity parks when they have fever, be it low grade or high. Please let them stay home even if they have an exam. Please have pity on the other kids whom they will be infecting. It takes just one unvaccinated child to infect a whole class. Happened last year in a public preschool nearby wherein more than half of the class had mumps. The other section naman had rubella. Why did the kids get these infections? Most of them got their vaccinations from the local health center and were only given measles vaccine, not MMR.

The thing is, I wouldn't want to subject my child to multiple injections when I could do it for as few times as possible.  If 5 in 1 vaccines did carry a reasonable amount of risk,  of course I would prefer individual injections,  no matter how stressful or traumatic it is for my child or me. But to put my child, a mere baby, under such unneccessary stress, over unfounded claims, is just not something I think I'd personally do.

I still prefer the mono at selective vaccinations lang. Kinausap ko rin ang pedia na ganoon muna.
Pero if vaccines like MMR, DPT okey lang. Ang ayoko ay yong 5n1 or 6n1.

Good thing I don't have to worry about this. My baby's pedia, who was also our pedia, still uses mono vaccines and all's well naman saming magkakapatid. :)
