Teaching your Preschoolers at home after office hours

Hello mga mommies. First time ko gumawa ng thread. Question lang, how do you teach your child pag nasa bahay na? Araw araw nyo ba natutukan? Medyo guilty kasi ako dito. Hindi ko sya na aaraw araw natututukan. She's 4 yrs old and is currently attending day care level 2. she can read A-Z, count 1-20, knows the colors and shapes, and very active. Kaya lang suuuuper tamad mag sulat. Sabi din ni teacher sa school daw, inuuna ang laro. Siguro magsusulat mga 5mins, tapos ayaw na.

I brought her practice writing books. Sa umpisa, ok naman Mga dalawang letter A, 3 letter Bs, 3 letter Cs, pag D na, ayaw na.. tinatamad na... We practice at home pero ganun din, pag ayaw na nya, Magpplay na sya. Ayoko naman pilitin, sabi nila diba wag pilitin ang bata. Ang problema ko pa, i work on a shifting sched. Right now im on a 1PM-11PM sched. Puyatera din sya, sumasabay samin, so late na dn sya gumising. Siguro if im on an 8-5 shift, kayang kaya matutukan everyday. My routine ba kayo pag study time mga sis? Or whats the best way to catch their attention pag study time? Thanks

My daughter was 4 when she started Nursery, and sa umpisa talaga ANG HIRAAAAAAP mag-sit down session (even at home) para mag study-time --- lalo na writing. Test of patience and determination talaga sya...for mommy. hehe. With my kid, WAHM ako so I try talaga to insert study time with her from M-F. Pakonti-konti, nung una 3 minutes, then 5 minutes, then yun patagal na ng patagal. Pero I try not to make it more than 15 minutes at a time nung Nursery sya. Pero say, we're in the middle of a session, tapos bigla-biglang gusto play, I try to do something fun with her na related pa din sa writing activity namin. Like say, letter na sinusulat is letter B, magdrawing ako ng things na nagstart sa B ganyan, tapos hulaan nya. Tapos after two or three samples, balik sulat. Technique technique. Hehe. Pero hindi ako basta give up agad, sige laro ka na lang ganyan.

And I am so thankful na I didn't give up agad kahit hirap na hirap din ako. Kasi in her Junior Kinder year(2014-2015) napakadali na nyang turuan, pati sa pag-assignment, she needs very minimal guidance. And she knows when it's study time, it's study time. Play comes after. I don't have to tell her, she even reminds me pag sobrang busy ko nalilimot ko na study time na.

You really need to build good study habits early on, especially sa bahay. It's challenging, pero it will benefit you and your kid talaga in the long run.

Hello TS: well when my son started big school, it's difficult ot get his attention to review since in his mind... It's all about play. So we thought of a way to make it look like we were just playing. We do question and answer while we play lego, puzzle. Or sometimes we ask question then if he got it wrong there's a consequence e.g. Dance, sing etc. of course on my part, I sometime get my answers wrong to encourage him to correct me. Whenever he asks me something I will answer him wrong and he would tell me "No Mommy, the answer is ___". It encourages him also to be confident with his new learnings.

Then Junior Kinder, i bought him big white board. We started drawing there for lessons. Then sometimes he would be the teacher and I would be the student. But most of the time, we play contest. Whoever wins, get this prize. So until we built the study time and routine.

Also make sure you instill as early as now, no play time without doing their assignments first. We need to make sure to remind them how important education is. We need to give them example that they can easily understand. Like in our case, when we go out and we see street children begging, we would tell him how lucky he is to be able to go to a good school to learn and not worry about how he will be able to eat for that day. Unlike those children they need to work to be able to buy something to feed themselves and their family. Then we give him a tour sa slum area one time, we told him that most of the people there haven't finished schooling and it's possible it could also happen to him if he wont study well.

Kids are smarter nowadays, they can easily absorb information, life lessons like sponges. Even if you can't spend time with your kid all the time, what matters most is the quality time you will be able to spend with them during your free time. A friend of mine would really wake up early just to be able to meet her daughter before going to school in the morning eventhough her shift ends at 4 am sometime. Or she would adjust her sleeping time to be able to spend at least an hour with her before she goes to sleep..  (She works at the BPO industry, so she also have shifting schedule)

That whiteboard is a must.  If I want to teach my daughter a bit intensively, I need all the tools I can get.  I love that whiteboard that her father set up for us.  It's so helpful.  Whenever  I want to emphasise about something, I write the word/s on it.  She finds use for it whenever I'm not around too.  She puts a lot of drawings that she shows to me once I'm home.

Salute to your friend.  Hirap ng sched nya pero still finds the time.  We really have to spare time for our kids, no matter how long or short, they need to know we really are around.  Maganda na may natututunan sila from us instead of strangers (or househelp).

True sis Anne, I really admire how she makes time to do that. She even told me one time if she can only choose not to work, she would bring her child at school and pick her up too everyday. Kaso need nila both mag work so they can send her to best school.

Ngayon ko lang nabisita to. Thanks everyone for the input. It's been almost a year whew! Sa umpisa lang pala mahirap. I transferred my daughter after 1 year of daycare to a big school. Dun sa big school naaccelerate pa sya from Junior Casa to Senior Casa. Totoo yung test of patience. I allotted 1 hour to review/study/make homeworks and achiever naman sya sa class nila. 

Looking back at my struggles before, nakakatuwang isipin. Straight A's lahat sa subjects nya, baka magtop pa sya. So ayun, guidance talaga and make time for our kids. Thanks mommies!

This is so inspiring! I've been wanting to do this kaya lang my kid is such mautak. Daming excuses. Then ako naman pagod na din. Tapos iniisip ko na may tutor naman sa school. Kaya imbes na i push ko ang pagturo ay hindi nalang.

I admire you sissies na kayang gawin ito. I hope magawa ko din.

@smile yay sis congrats. Di ba ang sarap ng feeling when you know your kid is doing great at school.

@electricpink, there is no suvh thing as mautak sis when it comes to our kids. One thing I learned from my hubby is "never give up on our son". Ganyan rin ako before, kaya ako icontrol ng kid ko but I realized that im the parent so dapat ako ang magcontrol sa kanya. Bata pa yan, kaya dapat kaya natin sila icontrol mahigpit kame super sa anak namin. By the time na mag 13 na sya maglo loosen up kame ng kaunti kasi siguro naman sa 12 years na instill na namin yung mga important basic manners nya to be a good person. Then when he's in college, loosen up a little bit again. After college sya, bahala na sya. Im pretty sure he will survive na nun kasi naituro na namin siguro ang halos lahat na dapat nya malaman. Iba pa rin kasi sis na parents ang nagtuturo sa kids compared sa tutor. Try mo ulit, dont give up sis

^yes sis electricpink. how old is your kid? if i may suggest, take it one step at a time. let's say 15 minutes a day muna. sa umpisa... just play with them... observe kung anong hilig nya, (sample: my daughter mahilig sa lutu lutuan kitchen kitchen playset) Gigising ako ng maaga (im on a nightshift) which is around 6 or 7PM, makikipagplay ako sa kanya ng kitchen kitchen. After a couple of days, eventually, i introduced yung money. 10pcs 1 peso coins. So, mag oorder ako sa kanya kunwari "can i buy a fried chicken please? how much?" sasabihin nya, this is 5 pesos. Ill give her 5 1 peso coins. Ayun tuwang tuwa naman sya na magluluto kunwari and isserve yung order ko... Then its her turn, sya naman mag oorder and mag babayad sa akin... Ganun lang din.. So naglalaro kayo and nag aaral at the same time.

Be creative lang sis and most importantly, have time. kahit 10 mins of your full attention lang at first... masasanay ka din... go for it!

Thanks for inspiring stories sisters! Trying to homeschool our son, he is 3 years old, foundation stage 1 na dapat sya kaso hindi kame nakapagpareserve ng maaga at ang mga preferred affordable schools namin e full na.

Working mom din kaya thrice a week at least 1 hr a day ko lang sya natuturuan, sobrang nakakaubos ng pasensya minsan at gusto ko na talagang tigilan, iniisip ko nlang we are building our child's foundation.

Hello mommies, share ko lang. di pa naman preschool daughter ko, but i started to "homeschool" her when she was only 14 months old ata - pero hindi talaga aral na aral. Through play namin dinadaan. Nakaktuwa lang kasi nakita ko talaga yung progress nya. She just turned 19 months, and sa ngayon, she can distinctively recite phonics, count from 1-10 , recognize yung shapes, colors and now naman sound ng animals. Dinaan ko lang sya sa palaro laro, then pinapakitaan ng educational toys (hindi yung battery operated) and other learning materials. Sobrang mabenta sa kanya yung flashcards hehe.

Minsan nakakaubos talga ng pasensya kasi super kulit kulit, tapos yung work ko pa is panggabi. pero i make sure na kahit 15-20 mins nag aallot ako ng time to "homeschool" her. Ngayon naman, ang pinapagawa ko sa kanya is painting naman. para mas madami [pa sya malaman na colors.

Bottomline lang, if parang ayaw ni baby mag aral, try to figure out kung ano yung dapat i apply na teaching style sa kanya. My daughter kasi loves music, kaya whenever i teach her, parang dinadaan ko sa pakanta kanta (kahit di naman kagandahan boses ko) plus medyo visual, kaya more on picture cards pinapakita ko.

I also sometimes go home na super late from work. First school year ng son ko, hubby and I just made sure that he gets to a habit na when we tell him na it's time for homework ay kusa na syang uupo sa study area nya. Pag wala namang homework, pasimple lang namin sya nirereview while he's playing. For example when they just learned about colors (and how to spell them) I would ask what color of play-doh he's playing with then spell it out. When they started learning about counting 1-100, we noticed that he's getting into it when we sing so we just take advantage pag in the mood sya for singing tsaka namin sya sasabayan ng song nila na counting 1-100.

I think study time should not be stressful for both parents and kids. Maraming pang-uto ways kumbaga so your child can learn while having fun. Pag pinipilit kasi sila mas lalong pumapalag.

we put up a poster of the alphabet and numbers from 1 to 100 sa playroom nya and whenever nasa mood sya, I recite the numbers from 1 to 30 (muna) and then sing the ABCs while pointing to the letters. She's 2.5 yrs old and she can count naman from 1-10 but bulol, medyo medyo until 20 but misses some numbers sometimes and ganun din sa alphabet... but she recognizes the letters na kasi pag may kaharap syang book, tuturo nya yun letter and she'll say it out loud

I'm thinking of buying some worksheets na rin na we can work on... meron ba kayong alam san makakabili ng worksheet na in tagalog?
