Saving Technique for Married couples
« on: February 27, 2015, 10:06:32 am »
Hi Sisses!

I am newly married, and I just want to ask you for some saving techniques as a married couple. I have my own savings and investments (though small amounts plang) like stocks, MF and VUL insurance. But my problem is, now that I am married, I find it hard to ask my hubby to save for our family as well. He is still the breadwinner of their family, kaya I cannot force him to save a lot for our own family. but hopefully, up to the end of this year nlang. we are still negotiating on it pa.
To married couples, how do you start your savings? same amount that you agreed to monthly, or like 10% of each salary? do you open a joint savings account on banks, and invest on joint accounts like MF, UITF?

Thank you in advance, sisses!

hi sis, yung sa amin ni hubby, ako yung nag aayos ng budget pero dahil medyo magastos ako minsan hindi advisable na ako ang maghawak lahat :) basta taga compute lang ako lagi.

what we did after the wedding ay nag open kami ng joint account. lahat ng monthly bills (ie. rent, groceries, etc) sa joint kinukuha and nagtatransfer kami ng certain amount (equal share) don every payday.

then we still have our own personal account para sa mga responsibility namin sa parents namin.

Newlywed here 2 weeks ago.

We also have one joint account for our expenses. We also have our own personal accounts. But I am thinking to open another joint account for Family emergency fund.

we have a joint account for emergency fund and stocks and uitfs for our retirement and plans. but i still have my own accounts and funds (which are not hidden). he gives me 80% of his salary and most of my salary goes to savings. since we don't have much things to spend on, i try to save at least 50% of our salary.

if you can't force him to commit to saving for your family, just try to save as much as you can with your own salary. it will still build up and better than nothing at all.

Married for almost 5 years now..right after the wedding, we opened a joint savings acct, diretso dun lahat ng income ni hubby. Our goal then was to save up for our own house. Now, after the house construction, medyo drained ang savings..we just started to get back on track with our finances. Nag-open kami ng another joint savings acct, passbook lang to make sure di magagalaw. Every month nagdedeposit kami dun for our savings, walang specific amount kasi di fixed amount ang income ni hubby, but our target and pinaka goal namin this year is to be able to save at least 6 digits per month..hopefully ma-achieve namin, medyo mahirap since we already have 2 young kids..we also make sure na may at least 100k pa din na matira sa old savings account (with atm) for emergency purposes lang.  our emergency fund was invested sa family business ng husband ko, higher interest kasi compared to banks at pwede naman namin kunin anytime kung kelangan.medyo di kami risk taker ni hubby so puro savings account lang kami..technically, husband ko lang nagcocontribute sa joint acct since im a full time mom..good thing is wala kaming sinusuportahan sa mga pamilya namin so nakaka save talaga. We really need to save for our kids (and for us) coz medyo late na kami nagstart ng family..

This is difficult bec it would mean different styles depende sa dynamics nyo ni hubby.

There are some husbands who give specific % or amount of their income some even full income to their wives for them to budget or manage. Others naman, magkakaiba toka sa expenses. Say husband sa schooling ng kids, bills while the wife is in charge of grocery, savings and food.

There are also couples wherein husbands are in charge of budgetting kasi their wives are not comfortable keeping the money kasi baka madala sa shopping.

Whatever you both decide on, make sure it is based on each of your income. And set aside % for savings and retirement.

It's good that you already had a good start. So keep it up and keep on encouraging your husband to do the same.

In our case, I keep both our income. Possible na meron pa din si hubby mga sidelines of course para naman sa ibang purchases nya. Pero I dont post strict rules on those na. I let him enjoy na lang para meron din syang sarili and pang surprise sa akin 😍

Everything is pooled into joint accounts. Pag pasok ng income, transfer agad sa joint account. 20% goes to savings then the rest are for expenses.

Mahirap pala talaga when you're starting out ano?

Thank you sisses for the tips! Maybe saving same % of our salary will work better for us, since mag kaiba kami ng salary bracket. We opened a joint account, but mabilis din maubos ang pera naming, so I guess we need to open another joint account na passbook lang para di magalaw.

Will appreciate more tips from you sisses!

Hi! Medyo newly married din ako sis.

We agreed to live on one income -- his paycheck pays for all living expenses (pati allowances namin), and mine goes into savings and investments. Parang pinaka-simple yun. So far okay naman :)

Part of our savings goes to helping his or my family pag may nanghingi.

BPI Save-up.  Para automatic yung pag-save namin.  Ngayon kung may natira pang savings from our pooled income, we also have a joint account.

In our case, nag-open kami ng isang joint account. This will be our savings. We will deposit thousand pesos both of us sa account na ito. Andito na din yung nalikom last wedding. then remain pa din bank accounts namin nung single pa kami. change lang ako ng name at walang mababago. Our rules so far, equal ang distribution sa both parents every month. I will give amount to my mom and dad, he will give amount to his side. Equal share ika nga. We both working btw. However, he told me na sagot nya expenses ko. Like every day needs ng isang wife, health expenses, pamasahe, and etc. 1 month newly wed here.

After nun wala pa kami naiisip after dahil may binabayaran pa syang lupa na hinuhulugan. Maybe kapag lumaki na savings sa joint account within this year, tsaka kami magbubuild at magseset ng emergency fund sa another bank account. Then after nun, for retirement fund naman.

^ that's a good start. It's always nice to have an open communication. and Kudos to your hubby for offering to pay for your daily expenses and of course for being open in terms of discussing finance.

Since one pa lang ang student namin ni hubby we make sure that we invest 30-50% of our income monthly. We try to live on the lower income and most of the time we disregard the business income and sidelines, everything goes to our UITF, MF and stocks. We both know that when the other kids started going to school the % of investment might change so we try to invest as much as we can now. We also have specific amount allocated for our parents and parents in law, relatives, or friends in need monthly. This goes well for us...

been looking for such thread :-)... Hubby and I have 1 joint account, then I have my own account then we have petty cash na readily available para hindi na kami palagi wiwithdraw sa accounts namin. Hubby gives me all his money then nilalagay namin sa joint at account ko kase he's the spender type kaya kapag nasa akin daw pera hindi niya magagastos :-).... Yong petty cash naman nakalagay sa envelopes para we can track how much na lang budget for every expense, kapag konte na lang laman ng 1 envelope it means napapa-sobra gastos namin don sa particular item or expense na yon :-)

Question sa mga married couples. How long did it take you before kayo nag apply ng joint account? Nagpapalit ba muna kayo into married name before nagapply? If so, paano set-up niyo nung wala pa kayo joint account?
