Choking or Nasasamid si Baby lage

Hi mga sisses,

wala kase akong makitang topic regarding choking or lageng nasasamid si baby.
Paano po ba ang gagawin ko kase since birth up to now 4 months na si baby lage siyang nasasamid sa vitamins at tubig. Pero sa milk hindi.

Every inum niya ng vitamins at tubig nasasamid.

^ First of all, you should not be giving water yet. Water should only be introduced starting at 6 months of age once the baby has started complementary feeding. Once water is introduced, it should not be given through the bottle. It should be given via sippy cup to prevent choking and to train the baby to drink fluids through a cup. Giving water through the bottle is a no no because fast ang flow nito through the nipple of the bottle kaya nagchochoke ang baby.
Second, how do you give the vitamins? Do you aim in the middle or the side? If in the middle, talagang magchocoke ang baby kasi mastimulate ang gag reflex. Medicine should be given through the side of the mouth to prevent choking. Make sure also that the head is elevated when giving meds just like when you are feeding your baby.
Have you told your pedia regarding this concern? What did your pedia say? Medyo matagal na rin kasi since birth pa pala ito so dapat nabring up na ito sa pedia mo.

^ Current recommendation is not to give water to babies below 6 months of age since the water in the breastmilk as well as in formula is enough to keep the baby hydrated. Giving water to the baby might also make the baby feel full and lose his appetite for milk. Pwede rin magkaroon ng water intoxication as cited here:

Always keep the head elevated when feeding and giving vitamins to prevent choking kasi little aspirations might lead to pneumonitis or pneumonia later on. Pwede rin ang gastric reflux that may manifest as throat clearing or cough.
May problems ba siya with swallowing? Hindi ba malakas ang flow ng nipple ng bottle niya? Hindi kasi dapat naiipon sa throat niya ang milk or meds niya unless sobrang bilis ng pagfeed niya and hindi niya nacocontrol ang pag-swallow.

Nasasamid din si baby ko when she was a newborn hanggang 1.5 months siya. Sabi ng pedia ko normal lang yun sa babies kasi maliit pa daw yung airways nila. My pedia also said to give a little water using a dropper after feeding kung formula fed to avoid yung build up ng milk residue sa tongue. I also give my baby a little water after giving her nutrilin drops.

^ Throat clearing is normal during the 1st month of life due to pooling of secretions in the throat by the baby but this is usually outgrown as the baby grows bigger and their swallowing reflux gets better. If it is still present at 4 months of age (the age of the baby of the TS), then certain conditions such as gastric reflux should be considered.
Cleaning the tongue with water from a dropper to prevent milk thrush is also permitted, but what is not recommended anymore is to give extra water even to formula fed babies because the water in the milk is enough to keep them dehydrated. That is the recommendation of the American Academy of Pediatrics as well as the local gastroenterologists.

If your baby has a short neck (common in big babies), there is a tendency for pooling of secretions. Head and neck elevation is very important during feeding. I suggest you bring up your concern to the pedia again so that she can check if there is anything else to be done. She is the best person to say whether or not, extra interventions are needed.
