Too old for school?

im already 31 and have a family na.... naka graduate na ko ng college nung 2004 but now im thinking of going back to school to take up another course which is nursing.... Am i too old to go back to school? Meron bang mga sis dito na 2nd courser at age 30+? Share naman kayo ng experience....

Hi sis,

In my opinion, Do it if you really like to be a nurse. Kasi sis, sayang naman kung hindi mo gagamitin yung profession mo di ba and if you are not happy doing it, sayang ang 4 years.

Pero kung gusto mo talaga maging nurse someday, why not? ako, I really want to be a teacher. kaya I'm planning to take units this sem to fulfill my dreams. I know a lot of people kahit mid 30's na nagaaral pa rin, it doesn't matter as long as you love what you're doing. and also, pray and ask for wisdom if that is the will of God for your life.

It is never too late to re-invent yourself.   
But the issue is: WHY?

If you are going for a 2nd degree to go work in the US -- think that over again.
That's the only motivation?
See, it isn't that easy to work in the US if nursing ang route mo.
My mom's US citizen BFF pUlled out of Trinity here her kids taking up nursing coz there is that ruling to practice nursing there -- you must study there.   
Quite a number of hospitals have been closing down due to operating losses (3 closed down last year in NYC).  Sure, there is always home-care nursing, etc. but well...
I do not hear much of nurses from here getting hired to be nurses there nowadays, but what do I know?

Hindi din ganon kadali ang buhay sa US ha.
If you will not have the time & energy to guide  your daughter growing up -- haynaku, baka ikaw 2 degrees and your daughter HS grad lang. 

Is your daughter living with you in HK?
If not, why don't you research countries where you can be employed with your current degree and skills AND take your daughter along?  Tapos, doon ka mag aral uli for your masters  or whatever, or even a 2nd degree.   
There are sooo many other countries where life is better, than in the US.   

I really do not know of your circumstances, but YES you are not too old to shift careers, or study for a 2nd degree at your age. But make sure it is for the right reasons.
Why don't you assess yourself &  nail down your  talents & strengths? Doon mo i-linya your 2nd degree or advanced studies to upgrade your employment potential.

Yes, I know of someone.. Married, no kids.. At 34 went into med proper.
Opinion namin, she wants to eventually leave her  bossy bum hubby (bum kasi may fat allowance from US parents)  behind 1 fine day.   The way he bosses her around, we are not surprised if she will do that after she graduates.

actually the main reason is just so we could migrate to US, Canada or UK....

I used to work in an office pero hindi din ganon kalaki ang kita kahit nandito na kami sa hk, well compared siguro sa kikitain sa pilipinas shempre mas malaki, pero compared sa kikitain ko if i become a nurse, doble.... parang pinakamalaki ko na pede kitain dito is 50-100k compared to 150-200k sa abroad.

So yon parang gusto ko lang kumita ng mas malaki and feeling ko kasi mas stable job ang nursing, yung tipong kahit umabot pa ko ng 50+ e pede pa din ako mag work.

andito kami lahat ng family ko (my husband and daughter)... pero yun nga parang gusto ko lumipat sa "greener pasture".

Sa ngayon naguguluhan ako kasi matagal din ang 4 years...

If you just want to immigrate -- Canada & Australia, New Zealand too,  may be easier to get into.
AND, parang mas maganda quality of life doon kesa sa US, IMO.
Yes, HK is a dead-end, you will never get citizenship there even if you work there for decades.
Singapore  became tougher to get into since the deadline 3 (or 5?) years ago.

I still think it is better for you to immigrate 1st, then study there.
Yes, nursing is a stable career.
Dentistry, though, brings in bigger bucks.

sis nurse grad ako .wayy back nung nursing students ako may mga classmates ako na 30+ and ok naman sila.. it is not too old to study nursing but I tell you nursing is not just  having a larger income and to have a stable work. medyo mahirap din magwork kasi hawak mo ang buhay ng tao unlike other jobs.. you'll also experience both happiness and sadness from your patient as well..

if magUS ka medyo mahirap ngayon not unless na meron ka nang employer na willing to process your papers

sa canada naman mas maganda dun and pati ang benifits. same process with US kailangan mo magstate board exam dun plus IELTS

pero kung capable ka naman na dun ka na magaral mas maganda compared dito sa pinas. kasi dun you could also have specialty kahit nurse ka like for example Nurse anesthetist, forensic nurse etc.. 

if you want to pursue this.. just make sure na hindi ka takot sa dugo hehe.. meron kasi akong classmate nasa loob kami ng operating room ayun biglang nahimatay takot pala siya sa dugo eh yung inooperahan eh tinatangalan ng paa kaya madugo..

@prettybarbie - sis hindi pa ako nakapag abroad mga cousin ko na nurse at friends ko ang nasa abroad. yung ibang staffmates ko dati mostly ngayon nasa abu dhabi infairness malaki sweldo nila tax free and with food and housing allowance pa sila.

pero mas family oriented sa tingin ko ang canada kasi maganda din ang health benefits dun and other things compared US. gusto ko magpunta ng US kasi may mga relative ako na andun.

ah... may relative din ako sa abroad and sya din ang nagpu push sakin na mag take ng nursing para makasunod ako don.... matagal pa naman ang pasukan makakapag isip isip pa ko....

It is never too late to study again, kahit pa 40+ ka na.

Ang question ko lang is gusto mo ba talaga maging nurse?  Hindi biro yung work. Kasi I know of people who enrolled in nursing, MBA or any course kasi ang iniisip lang nila, end in mind, malaki ang sweldo. Pero the job itself, or mismo yung pag-aaral, hindi buo ang loob nila. Kaya in the end, they drop out in the middle, sayang lang yung naspend na tuition and time.

Sis, maybe you can look at your undergrad course, and take up more certifications/courses to supplement your existing strengths?  Baka pag ganun, it can take you 2 yrs lang to complete a degree or masters in whatever you are doing?

Sa ngayon nagtitingin tingin ako ng mga post graduate courses at naghahanap din ako ng open university...

mas okay nga siguro yon kesa mag full time na naman ako sa school...

Kung US ang target mo, and MBA ang route mo -- study there.   Think that  over well.     Even MBA grads there have difficulties finding jobs there.
Dito sa Manila, madami from top schools  here went to the US for their MBA -- bumalik dito.  Sangkaterban sila sa Citibank & unibanks dito.

Sis yung tinutukoy ko na both happiness and sadness eh you feel pity and emphaty over the patient and there are times that you feel attatched to them kasi super tagal mo na sila inalagaan and in the end they'll die. Pero may times naman na ang saya saya ng pakiramdam kasi nakauwi yung pasyente ng magaling at buhay and yung family ng patient eh as in super nagpapasalamat sa inyo na mga nurse at doctors kasi inalagaan yung kamag anak nilang may sakit.. All the hard work you did for the patient is all worth it..

In nursing depende din kasi sa area na napuntahan mo. Ako kasi sa pedia ward ako nagstart and later nasa pedia icu na ako.. Mas toxic sa icu kasi 50-50 na ang patient pero very rewarding kapag gumaling yung patiente.

May maeencounter ka na maarte, masungit, nakakaiinis, demanding na mga relative at patient pero you still have to smile and talk to them nicely.. Pero my mga ubod ng baet din naman tapos yung iba super gwapo at magaganda na relative hehe bonus sa work kaya masaya pumasok sa room.. Hehe speaking the truth lang ha.. Hehe..


Ako hindi ko naman totally gusto ang nursing kung baga Ok lang. Pero when I started working I learned to love my job and my patient too. Pero case to case basis kasi hindi naman lahat after grumaduate eh gusto pa din magnurse. Pero while working nakakaburnout din naman

HI sis. One is never too old for learning. If it thats what's in your heart then pursue it. I am currently enrolled in college takin up OT Im 26 and I have a family already. The thought of going back to shool terrifeid me at first, but it is what I wanted even before I had my son. Its actually fun for me because the youngsters remind me of what I used to be. It is hard balancing school and family but it wil all be worth it. If target mo U.S if possible wag nalang Nursing sis, super dami na kasing walang work. Look into Pt or Ot and Rt they have a promising future ahead.
