toddler tantrums- how to handle?
« on: June 09, 2014, 11:46:08 am »

how do you handle your babies pag ganyan, mga sis?

Hi sis, try diverting his attention like kunwari magbibigay ka ng toy na matagal na niya di nakita. Baka pagod nga lang talaga sa paglabas niyo and I assume going to the beach is not your daily routine?

i normally talk to my child calmly, as in kahit nagwawala na sya, I stay calm as much as I can. I talk to her, and ask her why is she crying, is there something wrong in her, kung may masakit or what. what makes her cry like that, why is she angry, etc etc... basta inilalabas ko ang emotions nya, napapansin ko, kapag nasabi nya ang gusto nya, kumakalma na sya. nakikipag-usap sya ng maayos.

We try to distract her. If that doesn't work and she's already in deep in the tantrum we ignore her nalang. I'll tell her I won't play with her until she stops her crying.

Sometimes it works, other times it doesn't.

My son used to throw tantrums whenever hindi nya nakukuha gusto nya. I just ignore him. I know mahirap pero kasi for me it worked.

Pag tumahimik na sya at tumigil na, that's when I talk to him. Pag umiiyak yun ngayon, titingnan nya muna ako. Pag biglang di na ako nakatingin sa kanya, titigil na sya and sasabihin nya..."Mommy, smile please!" then saka ko kakausapin. It works all the time for my son. Kaya whenever he cries, usually 2-3 minutes lang then stop na sya.

I distract him with a toy or I'll point out the window kung may cat or dog sa labas or kung may plane. If that doesn't work, I'll hug him and talk to him until he calms down. Minsan I'll sing to him.  Depende on what works at the moment. I read somewhere kasi that prolonged crying releases stress hormones in babies' brains.

Before wala kaming problem when we go out, di naman kasi sya iyakin. But now whenever he wants something, we will cry out loud na may kasama pang tili, nakakaloka! Pag nasa bahay lang kami, I would normally ignore his tantrums, pansin ko kasi pag nakita nyang dedma kami, titigil din sya, but mahirap pag nasa labas, lalo na pag nasa resto, syempre nakakahiya sa ibang diners.

Hi Sis,

I have 4 options whenever my toddler throws tantrums.

1) give in.  kung ano man kinakagalit at kinakainis nya na hindi nya makuha, binibigay ko. end of story. (yun lang, hindi ito pwedeng palagi).

2) i let him cry it out.  deadma na lang ako sa cry at arte nya. pero nakamasid lang ako. baka kasi masaktan sya in the process ng pagiinarte.

3) show him who's boss.  we establish rules sa bahay na when mama or papa say no, no na. (sana...)

4) diversionary tactics.  I keep brand-new old toys.  why? for reasons such as tantrums and rewards.  whenever my little boy receive gifts, i keep some so next time, may bago pa din.  i use these brand-new old toys as diversionary tactics whenever he throws tantrums.

hope this help :)

Aside from the tips mentioned here, check the times when your toddler's tantrums occur.  Usually, young children who throw tantrums are tired, hungry, irritated because of external factors (heat, sweat, nap was cut short, etc.), a change in his usual routine, etc.  You have to be attuned to your child. Pag nag-travel kayo or pumasyal, work around your child's schedule (i.e., do not schedule a trip to the mall during her nap time at pag na-cut short ang nap siguradong magwawala iyan).  Do not expect your child to adjust to YOUR schedule.  Bring lots of snacks and small toys to distract your child.  Talk to your child in calm, soothing tones.

The key to effective discipline is consistency.  Be consistent and establish boundaries.  Model good behavior.

My daughter is turning 4 years old and she rarely throws unreasonable tantrums. When I say unreasonable, these are times when she merely just wants to get/do something that she's not supposed to.

I've never really believed in terrible two's nor troublesome three's cus I don't see my child as a nuisance. I'm not saying she's a perfect angel who does things right all the time. As early as 1 year old, I've started establishing boundaries with her. There were power struggles at first but she has learned that a NO is a NO and there really is nowhere around it. Whenever she would throw tantrums, I'd check if she's tried or hungry or if she's not feeling well. Most of the time, they throw tantrums kase they want attention or because they can't express what they feel.

I also teach my daughter to be expressive. Even when she's crying really hard or simply whining, I would ask her questions to know why she's acting that way. My rule is clear: If I don't get a proper answer from her, I'd stop talking to her and ignore her until she talks properly to me. I also respect her feelings especially when she's mad.

Bottomline is to be attuned to your child's needs and emotions.

Mga sis, my toddler is now 18 months old. She rarely throw tantrums but she never listen. Pinipilit nya lagi yung gusto nya and she finds way na makuha sya. One example is playing the switch of the electricfan. Sabihan namin ng "NO", kakalikutin padin nya. Sobrang hard headed ng toddler ko and I can see very strong personality nya. Sometimes, I don't know what to do. Any advice?

Also, my toddler is not malambing even she is a "SHE". Dahil ba she sleeps with yaya and not daddy and mommy?

Just remember "wala si tantrums pag walang audience". Kung mapapansin mo the more na inaamo or ine entertain mo yung tantrums niya lalo nagwawala. Let him cry for  a few sec/mins pretend to ignore his/her antics you'll see kusa yan hihinto.

And i agree na remain calm as you can kasi the more na nafu-frustrate ka lalo yan iiyak at magwawala.

Make sure na you stand din to what you started (ie., saying NO) so next time na you say it he/she knows na that you mean it  :)

Strong personality, never listens (though ngayon may improvement na, pero he still LOVES throwing things! even his milk!).

Obviously, she still does not understand the word NO, pero dont get tired kasi sa akin eventually nakukuha na nya, pag may sutsot at waving my finger gesturing no nage-gets na nya eh. Normal naman yan, tyaga lang talaga. Siguro kaya sya tinawag na terrible 2's kasi they do not understand anything pero they explore everything.

Di rin masyadong malambing anak ko and he sleeps with us ha. So walang bearing (sa tingin ko).
