Haha!

I used to be very particular about this before kasi I found an app in apple which really worked for me. When I switched to android, natigil. Now finally I think I found a good app sa android. Not as good as the one I purchased sa iphone dati pero pwede na. So I am starting the year right by starting to track again.

Baka may masusuggest din kayo for android users. Thanks!

1.  When I was living in singapore, since I don't have a maid and I don't know how to iron (sorry!), i made it a point to use fabric softener and it turned out a great idea since i'm lazy doing the ironing and it actually saved electricity.

2.  I learned that buying in bulk really makes a huge difference.  But only buy bulk if its the products that you can't live without.

     a.  I bought this Php900 Blue Ribbon detergent (13.62 kg) from Duty Free and we've been using it for a 10 months already.

     b.  There's also the Smart Choice Tissue roll, Php216 for 10 rolls.  Each roll actually stays for max 3 weeks on our common toilet (used by 3 pax).  Joy tissue paper lasts for 3 days only.

What I do is i try to squeeze each roll.  If your thumb and your index finger meets with few space in between, it means the tissue roll is just fluffy and it does not have enough tissue that would last a long time, else the roll is packed and will last you for weeks!

Also same with shampoo and conditioner, I buy 1 litre of my favorite brand so that I don't end up buying every month.

3.  With aircon, i keep it under timer.  It automates my split type aircon to turn off every 4AM since the cool air will linger the room till I am awake (8AM).  Not turning off by 4AM means, difficulty in waking up coz of the cold temp.

4.  Before I buy something, i turn to reviews for cheaper alternatives.

5.  I make it a point that I put a ceiling on what I buy.  For instance, for dress, my max is PHP1500, for tops, my max is PHP1000.

For pants and skirts, I go for uniqlo but I wait for them to go on sale (Uniqlo actually lowers the prices of non season stocks, for example, I buy their winter jackets during summer or their shorts during december).

6.  When I go to the mall and found something cute, I envision that its just going to be sitting on my desk (for example, cute notepad).  Then I immediately skip buying it coz its pointless. Sometimes, when you see something on display, it's just attractive to look at but when you actually buy and put it on, let's say your desk, it's forgettable already.

7.  I don't go to the groceries (or mall) when I am hungry unless my purpose is to eat.

8.  I invest on quality brands for NEEDS like wallets, panties, rubber shoes, etc.  Its pointless to buy something cute but will end up ripped after few uses.

9.  Before salary, I make it a point to compute all my payables (bills payment and allowances) then i transfer the remainder to my savings and investment bank account.

10.  I don't use my savings and investment bank account to pay for my expenses.  All earnings from it, i invest again.  All new expenses must come from allowance or bills payment.

11.  The greatest lesson I had is keeping a modest lifestyle.  If you already have a good rubber shoes, why buy 5 more pairs?  If you have a high quality branded bag already, do you need to buy three more branded ones? Do you really need a flamboyant car?  I have iphone 4 but I don't want to replace it with Iphone 6 since my phone is still working.

12.  Avoid being envious of other people, it will initiate competition and you will end up wanting everything your neighbor has (new gadget, new shoes, etc).  Be contented with simple things.  If they are trying to be competitive with you, think that your future will be better than theirs coz your net worth is higher.

Focus on your future, do you want to have a good life in the future instead of having luxuries today?

They say inverters really saves us up sa electricity. I'm not sure if this is really true because I don't have inverters na ref at aircon. But we have a friend of mine told us na nakaka-save talaga ng bongga sa electricity. Is this true mga sis?

I agree with sis xtine, who cares if hindi ka updated sa gadgets, latest fashion, latest food craze, latest travel, latest tv, at iba pa? Natatawa na lang ako sa kapit bahay namin na todo papansin whenever they buy a new tv, new food, new car, new gadget, and etc. They always put these boxes outside and near our BAKOD at take note hindi nakatiklop. At talagang nakaayos pa. Nakabox pa talaga in good condition! Even those HAMS which they recently bought and eat ha... I just laugh and said, who cares??? I do not brag anything we bought before or we've already eat it before pa talaga every Christmas... I do not brag to neighbors, because I believe in minimalist living and simple life. We keep these things secret. And these things you received everyday should be thankful talaga--- but not in your post in facebook. It should be directed through a prayer -- to GOD.

OK good vibes tayo. BTW sis, when buying bulk. Be sure to put it in small containers. Because in end, baka mas mapagastos ka pa.

Hi sis Nicola.

True that! I have a small container that is good for a month's use.  So i just pump away for refill from the big container (every month)  That's how I know one litre is about 10 months kasi I only use that particular product.  Also, I have short hair so matipid talaga.  I bought it for SGD 9 (PHP 320) so not bad for 10 months supply.

I am also planning to buy a converter aircon para tipid talaga sa electricity.  In the long run, although its around PHP30k, if I can charge it 6 months (or 12 months) on my credit card with no interest, then I think its worth it.

This.

One of the best tips I've read here.

Sadly marami ang naiinggit sa kapwa nila. I'm not saying this is exclusive for pinoys, but I also noticed it in other nationalities as well. Nature nga ata ng tao ang maiinggit sa kapwa and as a consequence, they spend their supposedly savings just to make a good impression lang.

pano ba magstart sa ganito?

^ For one, go for reputable insurance companies. Personally, I think Sunlife is a good choice because they are established. Convince yourself - do a research on how sunlife is faring. Just like banks may mga ratings/positions ang mga insurance companies with regards to their performance. Sunlife usually is among the top five of the list of insurance companies in the Philippines for several years.

You could get the information from newspapers, or the easiest, from google. Dito sa forums... well, medyo mahirap as you will find yourself reading threads as the information is not that organized. I think the two mediums above are easier anyway and it will provide you an objective and unbiased information.

I am not an insurance agent, btw.

So paano mag-start? I'd say educate yourself on what insurance is, the different types and sub-types and how these things will help you. If you know well enough - only then you can decide whether you need an insurance or not, and if you need one, which insurance type is suitable for you. It's also possible din kasi na depending on your situation, baka overkill na rin ang magkaroon ng insurance and that you do not need it at all.

BTW, having an insurance does not mean you are able to save. Some insurance policies allow you to save [actually it's more of an investing than saving, as in the case of VULs] while others are just dedicated to doing payouts when something tragic happened (life insurances, car insurances, accident insurance). Group insurances is generally more of the latter, so hindi ka talaga nakakapag-save. Therefore, a talk about insurances would be OT for this thread.

There are few threads about insurances in this section that you might want to check in addition to the research I have recommended.

-nakalista lahat, mahilig naman ako magsulat sulat so okay sa akin itong method na ito (what to buy, budget for the month, etc.)
-if it serves its purpose, use it and don't buy a new one (my phone's turning 5 years old this March)
-I have a daughter who loves drinking water, kaya importanteng may non spill water containter kami.
-Unplug all appliances that's not in use, super malaki ang tipid nito sa kuryente
-Take advantage of all freebies, rebates, points. I personally love our freebie thread here in GT. Hahahaha! Naka saved ako last year ng 1 year supply for my conditioner ;)
-If you're a green eyed monster stop going to social networking site ;) Lahat ng brags andiyan
-Dining out, we always asked for water. Healthy choice and free

On topic: saving tips

same tayo sis, i also list lahat ng expenses ko for the day, down to the last centavo para i'll know where my money goes and then check my expense list kung ano ang pwede i-do away for next sweldo's expenses like last sweldo, i spent this amount of money for christmas gift, so wala na yun gastos for next sweldo :)

i have a nokia phone yung with flashlight hehe :)

my smac is very helpful. i swipe it for points everytime i shop for groceries for my "tindahan" sa office and i have used my points to shop for new items na din :D

Tipid tips by mary kate:

1. Kung nagutom habang namamasyal sa mall, tiis galore hanggang makarating sa bahay or nagbabaon talaga ko ng biscuit at tubig just in case di na kayang tiisin pa :)
5. Last but definitely not the least, nag seset ako ng budget for a whole week, na iyon lang talaga yung dapat ko gastusin at bawal ako lumagpas sa budget na yun. In case of emergency, may nakalaan na contingency fund :)

:P Mine's Nokia E63, turning 5 year-old in March. And again, no plans of purchasing a new one. Because I can still use it.

We just also bought inverter AC grabe sa mahal pero energy saving daw, fine. I have yet to see the diff kasi wala pa one month so I'll see, feeling ko naman totoo.

Ang hindi nalang maiwasan yung pag dine out as in kahit anong plan ialis wala talaga parang naging necessity na sya.

auto debit ang mga bayarin like rent, phone plans, electric bill (though pag winter malaki talaga kasi almost 24 hrs on ang heater dahil sa mga bata), etc. also, i check first the catalogues for stuff on sale before we go buy groceries.

Madami akong natutunan dito. Keep it coming sisses!

For me, some tools that help me make lesser expenses:

-Budgeting
I see to it na nililista ko everyday yung mga binibili ko kahit sa sari sari store to keep track kung saan napupunta ang pera, ultimo piso pa yan. By the end of the month, I would know kung ano yung pinagkagastusan ko. ex. 3 in 1 coffee ko, 7php sa katabing store namin and malakas talaga kong magkape like 4x a day so ending (7 * 4 = 28 28 * 30(days) = P840). Ending is I'd rather buy coffee, and creamer and sugar once nag grocery ako and it would sum up to like P500-600 so nakasave ako at least P200+.
-I always prepare yung mga things to buy sa grocery. I may not buy all of them at once, but I would at least know what the priorities are and so yung mga things on top of the list will be bought first.

-Playtime with my kid
During my free time, i make sure that I bond with my kids. And so, lagi ko silang dinadala sa mga play centers sa mall, syempre kasama ko,so may bayad din ang adult, but then mas prefer ko if they could interact sa mga kids na mas exposed. So dinadala ko sila sa park na may playground (like sa circle) and I've noticed na mas enjoy sila compared sa mall. So at least yung expense sa play center is pwede naming ipangdagdag sa food namin after nila maglaro.

-Electricty
Induction cooker is a great investment for me, same as with Led lights. No questions asked, mas male-lessen ang electricity bill. I also make sure na unplugang mga appliances na hindi ginagamit, maliit man an kino0consumenila even hindi ginagamit but then pag nagsabay sabay, ganun din.

Food
Technically, three lang kaming kumakain because my youngest is less than a year old. So meron my husband cooks at night and then sosobrahan namin siya so pwede pa siya until afternoon the next day. Hello microwave!

Clothes
-I'ma fan of ukay and tiangge! I must admit. As long as you can confidently wear them and hindi ka naman brand-conscious, then go! I appreciate that kasi I have been able to learn how to be stylish since afford ko silang bilhin and at the same time gumagana yung creativity ko. lol.

Travel
-DIY. It's not the expenses that would really matter, but the moment you're gonna spend with your family. Tiyagaan lang. Search on your own, sa dami ng resources online nowadays, I doubt if you could even find an excuse to learn to DIY.

Sorry napahaba yung post. Well, this is just for me and the things that are way too effective for me. happy saving to us! ;D ;D

- kapag kayang lakarin, go lakarin lang
- Turn off the lights/switch off the appliances when no one is around.
