Entering grade 1 at 5 years old...is that too young?

Hi! My daughter will be 6 late October but has been accepted into first grade at Miriam. Any thoughts on kids entering first grade at age 5?  Thanks!

She's just 1 yr advance kasi sa k-12, grade 1 is 6 yrs old. If kaya naman niya, why not diba?

She passed kinder already but Im more concerned if shes emotionally ready. A friend of mine who works Dep-ed said that studies show that kids who are at the older age group in the same grade do better cause theyre more emotionally ready. Just having second thought of having her start first grade early tuloy

It's not early, tama lang ang age niya. My daughter is 8 years old, and just finished Grade 3 sa Miriam. With the K12 adjustment, prep lang yan but they had to rename levels.

September ang anak ko.  Your daughter will have classmates who are even younger.

I think it's just the right age. Yan na din age requirement for grade 1 now because of K12.

if she is turning 6yo within the school year, tama lang yan. it is not early. my daughter turned 6 yo late July when she was in grade 1. And yes with the whole k-12 program, kinder 2 lang yan in the old system. my daughter did not have any problems since lessons were still tailored for their age group. most of her classmates are in the same age group (meaning year 2007 born). though she had a number of classmates who turned 7yo ng December. I dont remember anyone from her class who turned 7 yo in October/November.

Thanks for all your replies. My husband and I decided to keep her in kinder for another year but since she's finished with Miriam's CSC, we'll probably put her in another school and apply again  to Miriam for first grade. We're just really uncomfortable with her entering first grade at 5. During kinder, all her classmates were turning 6 and mga 2 lang sila na nag 5 and we don't want her to be in the younger age group =)

My sons were 5 when they entered grade 1 though they turned 6 a few weeks after school started.  They had classmates who turned 6 much later and those boys did well naman.  And they say boys mature slower than girls.  I think your daughter will be fine.

With K-12, my understanding is that most big schools adhere to the age requirement of 6/turning 6 during the grade 1 schoolyear and tailored the curriculum to make it fit the age group.

^true marose dahil may step up program ngayong summer ang school ni daughter dahil may classmates sya na mag 9yo na sa AY 2014-15 kaya dapat nasa grade 4  na, cite ng school ang k+12 may guidelines deped sa edad need nila ifollow.

My daughter turned 6 mid-October, so she was 5 when she entered Grade 1 and she was one of the youngest in class. Actually Assumption has specific ages for each year level (i.e., 5.8 – 6.7 for Grade 1) and she was a tad too young , but I asked the school if they could consider her, and she got accepted.
 
I think it depends on the child's emotional readiness. If you feel uncomfortable sending your child to grade school then don't :-) I myself had qualms but I didn't want to punish my daughter for graduating early. We survived first grade but the transition was a bit diffcult for her, and yes, she didn't perform as well as her other classmates who were roughly a year older than her. But towards the tail end of the school year she learned to adjust and ended up enjoying herself :-)

Thanks again. I talked to Miriam, they were fine with our decision and her age is still eligible for next school year. The age of her classmates will also be closer to her age. Although she's eligible for first grade, we dont want to rush her cause we feel she's not emotionally ready to be in that type of school setting for now

Dati yun din ang worry ko kung mahihirapan ba yung son ko na makacope sa grade 1 since 5 years old pa lang sya. Nursery and prep lang pinagdaanan niya. At sympre takot din ako kasi lalaki sya e mas playful ang mga boys at mas masipag mag aral ang mga girls pero kahit playful yung anak ko matataas ang grades  niya at nakasurvive sya ng gradeschool. He is in coming grade 7 at very thankful ako dahil pinasok ko siya ng maaga lalo na may K-12 na at least gagaraduate siya ng highschool at the age of  17    unlike mga classmate niya na gagraduate at the age of 18 -19.

pero depende pa rin kaya rin nakasurvive ang anak ko  dahil sa attitude nya sa pag-aaral  so kailangan mo lang maestablish sa kanya ang kanyang study habits.
