Measles Outbreak in Metro Manila...

As feared my daughter had measles. BUT since her MMR is up to date, the symptoms were very mild. Fever never went beyond 38.1 and lasted only for a day. She had though episodes of diarrhea and vomiting but these immediately stopped when we restricted her diet. The only telltale signs it was measles when she developed rashes day after her fever plus she had spots inside her mouth. Other than these, she was up and about. She had to miss though a week of classes cause it is contagious up to 4 days after the rashes appears.

^she's 6yo and goes to school everyday. It wasn't a big surprise anymore cause she could have easily have gotten it from someone from school.

^ The Measles vaccine given at 6 to 9 months of age is meant to cover the period when the maternal measles antibodies are already waning or disappearing. However, there are times wherein yung natitirang maternal measles antibodies interfere with antibody production if the measles vaccine is given earlier than 12 months of age kaya kailangan pa rin to give the 2 doses of the MMR vaccine to boost antibody production.
In the US. they do not give measles vaccine at 9 months of age since their maternal measles antibodies do not disappear right away and stay on till 12 months of age. They do recommend giving the measles vaccine at 6 to 9 months of age to those traveling abroad. However, this dose is not counted as a regular dose for them. They still have to give the 1st dose of the MMR vaccine at 12 to 15 months of age and the 2nd dose at 4 to 6 years of age.

You don't get protected immediately after vaccination. The immune system has to produce antibodies after encountering the vaccine and it usually takes 2 to 4 weeks for antibody production to be completed after vaccination.
With regards to your cousin's baby, it is possible that he or she was already exposed to the measles virus prior to getting vaccinated since there is an incubation period of 7 to 21 days prior to manifesting symptoms.

@Doclelet tanong lang po, my son was given PCV last feb.17 then 6 in 1 last march 1. We went to the health center today just for Vitamin A drops pero binigyan din siya ng MR vaccine. ok lang kaya yun? Btw 6 mos old si baby. TIA

Doc lelet: i just want to check with you po. kasi yung son ko na 3 and 1/2 y.o. nagka fever and abdominal pain 2 weeks ago for 3 days. tapos napansin ko na parang may bungang araw siya kasi sa may batok lang and hindi naman namumula tsaka konti lang. then nung monday morning, march 10, nag-fever nanman siya tsaka masakit nanman daw tummy nya.nung tuesday night, umabot ng 39.4 fever nya kya dinla namin sa hospital.yung cbc niya shows na mataas yung wbc nya, 14.but yung urinalysis nya clear naman.hnd pa halata rashes nya nun kc nga d naman namumula.nag start  mamula and kumalat hangang face nung wednesday na. pero since thursday wala na siyang fever, hindi din mapula eyes nya and wala din cough/cold. normal na nman pag-milk niya and wala diarrhea. measle din po ba kaya iyon? my sister said na baka viral exanthema lang daw. tomorrow kasi uwi na kami ng bicol kaya inisip namin na dun na lang ulit ipa-check and if in case kaylangan ipa-admit. appreciate your reply doc. thank you.

^ If it is measles or any type of viral exanthem, the wbc is usually on the low side. WBC is on the high side so it points to a possible bacterial infection. Kailangan hanapin ano ag cause ng pagtaas ng wbc. Best pa rin to have him checked up by his pedia para mavisualize yung rashes. Baka iba ang cause ng rashes.

Next vaccine after measles should be given after 4 weeks since measles is a live vaccine. Usual side effects are fever and rashes appearing 1 to 2 weeks after vaccination.

just to clarify po. my son with vaccinated with measles vaccine last march 12 at age 7months. and i was told by pedia to come back may 12 (hes 9 months old by this time) for him to get another measles vaccine. hindi po kaya madodoble iyon? thanks doc

^ Hindi naman madodoble since talaga namang may 2nd dose ang measles vaccine but we usually give it as part of the MMR vaccine at 12 to 15 months of age then another dose of MMR vaccine at 4 to 6 years of age.
If given early kasi at hindi pa nagwawane ang maternal antibodies, pwede ring mag-interfere ang maternal antibodies sa pag-gawa ng antibodies post measles vaccination. Please ask na lang your pedia for her own explanation as to why there is another dose at 9 months of age. Actually, based on feedback from patients, there are some health centers na pinapabalik din ang babies na binigyan ng measles vaccine earlier than 9 months.

hi sis, ask ko lang po.. may son was given sa health center ng AMV1 ng 9/20/13. he was born Dec. 9, 2012. nabigyan siya ng pentaxin 1 ng feb. pentahib 2 ng april at pentahib 3 ng May.. ng mag-announce sa tv na dalhin ang mag bata sa health center dahil sa outbreak ng measles nabigyan siya ulit ng for measles ng 2/3/14..

nung 9/13, (his 9th month after receiving yung measles amv 1 sabi sa kin, ibalik siya ng march kaso ng dalhin ko siya ng feb. for the measles booster bec. of the outbreak hindi ko na siya naibalik ng march which is supposedly his 15th month. isip ko baka hindi na kailangan [textspeak!] nabigyan na siya ng feb which was his 14th month. kailangan ko pa ba siyang dalhin ulit? I forgot to ask [textspeak!] ang damign tao sa center nun. he was also given vit. A last feb. thank you so much!

may measles si husband ko kawawa naman.. last year nagkaroon din sya sabi ng doctor posible na ibang virus daw same family ng measles.. ganun ba talaga yun?

^ Did they do serology testing to confirm if Measles (Rubeola IgM and IgG) ba talaga or some other form of viral exanthem ang naka-infect sa husband mo? Hindi kasi umuulit ang measles but there are other forms of viral exanthems that can cause similar symptoms like rubella and adenovirus.
