I highly recommend this site for those who's looking for cheaper alternatives. Basically it is renting a room in a local's house.

Hong Kong - 3x booked - we only book the same place since we are really satisfied with it
Singapore - 1x booked - the place is a bit far from the city but near the train station and we got our money's worth for a tight budget
London - 1x booked - great place too and the host was very accommodating

sis, pareho lang concept nya with airbnb and the other agencies acting as middle man between owner/landlord and renter. The more the merrier! Better for us consumers as we get a lot of choices.
