How to deal with loss of pet
« on: November 24, 2013, 05:01:31 am »
I seem to have read a thread about this before but can't find it. Mods, please merge na lang if ever..

We recently had to put our dog to sleep due to old age. We're all sad about this because he was like our "bunso" in the family. Alam naman namin his time is coming soon but knowing does not make it easier pag dumating na yung panahon..

May mga nagsasabi o nagtatanong ng pagkuha ng bagong pet/dog and this makes me sad and hurt as if his life did not matter. For others, this may be crazy but pet lovers would understand.

I'm really depressed.. I keep myself busy but there's no denying the pain. I know the others are feeling the same way too pero hindi namin pinapakita sa isa't isa and we're all trying to move on.

For those who has experienced this, how did you deal with losing a non-human loved one?

I am so sorry for your lost.

My 10year old lab died last September. He became sickly after his birthday. A few days before he died i already had the feeling that he was leaving us. At that time I was already crying. I had to ask my dad to take him to the vet again because I was already in pain and in tears. At that time, I could no longer hold my tears. I cried while I was talking to my dog. I told him that we will be okay if he leaves us. We took him to the vet and even had him confined but he was really sick. He died while he was confined. He was having seizures for almost 2 weeks. He died after having another seizure.

After our dog died, we all felt sad. My sister and I kept on crying. Even our male helper cried when he buried  our dog. A day after our dog died my sister and I decided to buy some Christmas decors. By the end of September we had a belen and a Christmas tree in our house. Our maids kept our dogs toys so we would not see them. My sister asked me to delete the videos of our dog. I had to record the seizures so I can show them to the vet. After every seizure I would take our dog to the vet kahit na makulit na ako kasi halos daily nandun na kami.

For me, it is not easy to forget my dogs after they died. Because usually they died after living with us for at least 5 years. They have a certain personality that makes them unique, they have favorites as well. After our lab died, suddenly we had a lot of excess bread because he loves to eat bread in between meals. We would all remember him when we see that we have alot of bread. Since he stayed inside our house most of the time, we felt sad every time  we eat as a family because he is not there to greet us. We miss him a lot because he loves being touched. In the caes of our 12 year old pitbull mix, he was always greeting us every morning and he seems to talk as well. He knows how to say mama and he seems to mumble on 'words' instead of barking. When our 1st dog died, I was in HS and i had a difficult time going to school because I kept on crying. I cannot forget our 1st dog because he tries to comfort me whenever he sees me sad. These unique traits makes it difficult to forget them. I am still mourning for the death of our lab but I think I am okay compared to last month.

We are now ready to adopt a new dog. But that does not mean that I no longer love my old dogs that died. I still love and miss them so much. From time to time I still cry when I look at their pictures. When that happens I try to recall how happy we were when they were still alive.

I hope you'll be okay soon.

i found a lump on our pet rabbit's jaw. dinala namin siya sa vet and he underwent x-ray. we found out na medyo malala na yung positioning ng molars niya. and base sa explanation ng vet even if we opt for surgery walang guarantee na magiging ok. the thing is, ang sigla sigla ng pet namin. he is eating well and very lively. pinacheck lang namin siya kasi may nakapa akong lump. the day na nadiscover ko yung lump i started crying na kasi based sa research ko it's not good na nga, may abscess na yung jaw niya. pinacheck namin siya sa vet just to be sure. nastress siya sa check up kasi hindi naman siya sanay na may ibang tao na humahawak sa kanya and we have to travel pa, tapos mainit, and doon sa clinic maingay kasi may mga naka confine na cats and dogs. and nung nakauwi kami naging matamlay siya and ayaw niya kumiain. nafeel ko din na parang nagtatampo siya.

the vet told us na lalala pa yung condition niya. so naglakas loob na kong magtanong kung ano yung time frame more or less. max 1 year daw bago maging full blown yung condition niya.  :'(

in my 30+ years of life ngayon lang ako nagkaroon ng pet that i am really attached to. before may mga fish kami and lobsters. nalulungkot ako kapag may namamatay but itong nararamdaman ko ngayon ibang iba. naiiyak ako kapag naaalala ko yung condition niya and nadedepress ako.. hindi pa namin sinasabi sa daughter ko.

Knowing their time is coming does not really help cope with the pain. All you can do is to make their remaining days the best you could.

I lost my two-year old shih two weeks ago.

He was doing well, ang takaw pa nga, until one morning nagsuka siya.

When we came home, andun siya, so tinatawag namin. Kapag ayaw niya lumabas, titingin 'yun. Nagtaka kami kasi he was facing the wall so nakatalikod siya sa'min na noon niya lang ginawa.

Nung paalis kami for church, hinatid niya pa kami sa door. Little did we know na 'yun na pala huling beses makikita namin siyang buhay. :'(

First time namin magkaroon ng pet na na-attach kami talaga kaya sobrang hirap.

this is so true.  :'(

^in a way i believe that. early this year we experienced a bad week. parang everyday may nangyayari na hindi ok. then one morning, nahulog yung pet namin from a bad jump. akala ko ok lang kasi he kept on running around pa. narinig ko nalang na parang he was slurping. hindi naman niya ginagawa yung sound na yun. pag tingin ko he was already bleeding. ang daming blood sa buong chin niya. ang mahirap sa pet namin konti lang ang vets who accept rabbits for check up. buti nalang yung malapit na vet sa amin tinanggap siya kasi yung gagawin sa kanya was to stop the bleeding lang. nakabalot siya sa towel na soaked in blood na. pati damit ko may dugo na din. akala ko talaga he will not make it. after his accident nawala lahat ng mga kung ano anong problema. but kung ako lang ayaw ko ng ganon. ayaw kong may saluhin siya. minsan nga kapag pagod ako after work hindi ko agad hinahawakan pet namin when i get home kasi ayaw kong may mapasa ako sa kanyang stress.

nafrufrustrate lang ako kasi may mga nameet akong mga vets na hindi mo makikita sa kanila yung care. na ang sarap agawin sa kanila yung mga pets kasi the way they hold/administer medication. walang kacare care. minsan nafeel ko din na parang wala manlang effort na ilaban yung case. well maybe kasi mas alam na siguro nila yung ending but it's still life at stake.

Our kitten died after Christmas last year, nakain nya yung sand litter nya na clay and nagcclump pagnabasa, nastuck sa throat nya at hindi na sya nakahinga because of that. We've only had her for a week kasi na pulot lang sya ng boyffriend ko on his way home from work. Narinig nya sa sidewalk na may umiiyak na kitten and when he looked down nakita nya yung kitten, he brought her home. We were so happy kasi gusto namin ng kitten and we found her, sabi namin na she's a gift kasi right timing sya. At first binigyan namin sya ng water and uhaw na uhaw sya, we don't have anything na for kitten or cats that night kaya nag luto nalang ako ng corned beef for her at sobrang gutom na gutom sya. Pinunasan namin sya and all after that we went to sleep, she was lying sa gitna namin and she looks very comfortable. The next day we brought her sa vet kasi nakita namin na putol yung tail nya, parang nabali yung cartillage and namamaga yung isa nya paw. Then we bought her food, her plate kitty litter and toys na gusto nya sa store and yung mga meds and vits na niprescribed ni dra for her. Few days na at lalo syang nagiging masigla nagstart sya tumakbo takbo unlike before na she's just laying beside me and sleeping, gigising sya to eat, drink and go to her potty sometimes magpplay sya saglit pero not more than 5 minutes sometimes even less. She would climb on my chest pag nakahiga ako and just lay there and cuddle with me. Until yung day na nakain nya yung sand sa litter box nya, she was playing there and yun yung way ng laro nya is kakagatin nya at I think nalunok nalang nya bigla yung mga sand at dun na nagstarmagclump sa lalamunan nya, iyak ako ng iyak and nagpapanic nung time na yun. Boyfriend was holding her and trying to remove the clump sa lalamunan nya, naghahabol na sya ng hinga at nagpapanic na din yung kitten namin. Nakanganga sya the whole time until na huminto na sya sa pag-galaw nya at lumaki na yung black ng eyes nya dun ko na narealize na patay na sya, nag wala talaga ako nun kala mo drama sa tv. Sinasabi ko pa na dadalaw pa kami ulit sa vet bukas kasi may appointment pa sya for following check-up at kailangan na nya gumising, umiiyak talaga ako at sinasabi ko na don't leave me. Boyfriend was there to comfort me pero kahit sya di mapigilan ang luha at nagssorry sya sa kitten namin dahil hindi nya naligtas. After namin ilagay sa box yung body nya we comforted each other my boyfriend would tell me na she lived a short but happy life kasi kahit a few days she didn't have to suffer sa streets at makipag patintero sa mga kotse. He kept saying that she's happy kasi we loved her unconditionally and that's all that matters that she died happy even just for a few days. I just keep that in mind everytime na naaalala ko sya, that she's happy and she's resting now and that this is God's will and it's out of our hands.

My inlaw's 13 yo pitbull was put to sleep just a month ago. They've seen it coming and they can't really do anything but to let go. A way for us to help them was to lend them our own pitbull. So every weekend, we would drop our baby to their house and pick her up Monday mornings. She brings joy to them, a reminder of how their own dog used to be, and they will always cherish him ( his name was Tyson :) )

More than a year nang patay yung lab namin.

I can definitely relate to all of you here. Just two weeks ago, we lost our dog too. He was just five years old, but he was already sick for a long time. Six months ago dapat ipaput down na sya, pero lumaban pa rin sya so sabi ng doc wag muna ipaput down. I know people may think it's silly but I really think he held on for us because he knew how much we loved him. :(

Ang masakit pa dito, he was put to sleep by my mother in law WITHOUT informing us. Ang sama sama talaga ng loob ko. He was my husband's dog kasi, at napamahal na rin sya sakin. He had to leave him at their house when we got married and transferred to our new place, where bawal ang dogs. Pero hindi kami nagkulang sa kanya. We bought all his food and paid for his medication. We would even give tips sa househelp nila na na assign magalaga sa dog. Tapos one day he just pooped so bad, and that's when my mother in law decided to put him to sleep.

If it hurt you too much, you should definitely tell your husband about it. It's not because it was his mother but because he should be your best friend.

Next month ang first year death anniversary ng "bunso" namin and we still don't have any new pet. I think if you feel you're ready na, go have a new pet. Though mas ok sana if you adopt (like from PAWS or CARA) than buy :) Mas fulfilling kasi you help give new life to those who have been abandoned or abused.

Jengc, it depends if you are ready. When our dogs died last year we tried our best to be happy. Our entire household was mourning because our two dogs died a few months apart lang. Both were senior dogs and they were already sickly a few months before they died.

A month after our last dog died we decided to get a new dog from a friend. But something happened. A stray sick (w/ mange) puppy followed me home. I fed and gave him a bath during his first day in our home. Since he was too small to be placed inside our dog house or to wear a collar or a leash, he was free to leave our home, kasya kasi sya sa gaps sa gate namin. He left our home after I fed him but he returned the following day. That's when we decided to take him to the vet and take care of him. We made sure that he was already well before we took the puppy of our friend.

At times we still miss our dogs but we are happy that our two new dogs are with us now. :)

He is my best friend, j.adore. Oh and he knows that I was upset with his mom, he just doesn't know HOW upset. I'm treading on tricky ground here, because one, my husband is already upset with his dog's death, and second he's upset with his mom as it is. Ayoko na gatungan pa. I think as a wife it's also my job to make things as light for my husband as possible.

jengc, I think if you think you're ready to properly care for a pet, you should get one. I think it's fine to get a new dog even if you still miss your old dog, as long as you properly care for the new one. And try not to compare the dogs so much, although minsan di mo rin maiiwasan yun. Just remember every dog is different, but they all need love and affection.

brought my almost 6-month-old kitten sa vet because of a sprain. sobrang likot so pinaiwan na lang ng vet kasi kapag medyo naghe-heal inilulundag niya yung sprained feet niya, hindi tuloy gumaling galing. 3rd day of resting na niya dapat today at iuuwi na namin siya, kaso this afternoon na heart attack siya. sabi ng vet may sakit raw siguro talaga yung kitten.

stray siya nung nakita lang namin siya dito sa labas ng house (aroound 6 weeks old), so we kept him.
