I know how it feels, my baby was crying so hard during our first two days in the hospital that I had to ask for breastmilk.  My baby was purely fed with breastmilk till 6 months napagod na din kasi ako.

When we got home, sobrang sakit ng nipples ko kaya I would sometimes pump the milk. Till now my baby seems to still want to latch.  Pag nakakakita ng bare breast, kahit sa papa niya bubuksan niya mouth niya as if to latch.

^please go to a breastfeeding advocate pedia or hanap ka lactation consultant para maturuan ka paano makapagdede kahit flat nipple mo.

So they did the syringe thing on me sa recovery room. Parang na pull lang yung nipple. Now my left breast is my son's favorite side. When he was younger medyo hirap siya to latch pero i dunno what happened he prefers that side now.
I dont think flat nipples are a hindrance. Patience talaga ang breastfeeding. It does get frustating lalo na sa start kasi ALL you do everyday is to have the baby latch and feed on you (small tummy, always hungry). So feeling natin walang nakukuha, thats where patience comes in.

I joined Breastfeeding Pinays when I gave birth but instead of helping, that group just made me feel a lot worse. I didn't post, I just read other people's comments. Unfortunately, I found most of those active members judgmental, narrow minded and scathing.

Mums need support... we don't want to feel like we're failures ::) just because breastfeeding came easy for someone doesn't mean it'll be easy for everyone else.

So in the end, my husband made me leave that FB group. He'd see me crying lang everytime I'd read it ::)

Anyway, I had a difficult time breastfeeding. I had super sore, cracked nipples. I had midwives checking my baby's latch the entire time we were in the hospital (5 nights) and they kept saying the latch is fine. Where I live, though we're not in the country, it's hard/expensive/far to find professional support. But I really tried my best and even if other mothers' may think it wasn't good enough, there's really nothing else I could've given more.

I'll still breastfeed our next baby but as early as now, I'm already doing more research. I already told my husband I'll be hiring an international board certified lactation consultant to visit us at home 2x a week for 2-3 months. They cost $130 per hour (see what I mean when I said they're not cheap?) but I don't care. All I know is I had such a hard time emotionally, mentally and physically when I was BFing and $130 p/h is a small price to pay.

gumdrops same sentiments re breastfeeding pinays.

1 year and still breastfeeding, though not exclusively anymore. I give fresh milk or formula sometimes though he prefers yung strawberry milk.

Re Breastfeeding Pinays

Sometimes nga medyo too aggressive ang reactions ng ibang members dun. But in fairness, the admins and some reasonable members speak up din naman to pacify/mediate..

Ako, i just mainly read, minsan nagco-comment pero di ko masyado dinidibdib, haha.

14mos na baby ko. I pumped at 5 weeks, bottlefeeding with pumped milk. Nakatikim ng jarred food si baby nung constipated (pureed prunes) and when we travelled to HK nung 6mos sya, pinapakain ko ng "junk" snacks like Baby Mum Mum biscuits and yun nabibili sa Healthy Options na veggie/fruit cereal (parang Fruit Loops na bilog-bilog). When out, i'd usually baon expressed milk, i cannot always "strike anywhere" so i look for the breastfeeding room if walang baon na expressed bm. So yup, madami din ako "violations", hahaha!

Anyway, when my baby turned 1, she started drinking fresh milk na (she likes Cowhead). Tsaka Dutch Mill, she likes it. So i stopped pumping at 13mos. During the day, di na sya masyado naglalatch kasi she eats solids na naman, so usually naka-straw cups or usual plastic cups si baby for the fresh milk and Dutch Mill (or minsan, straight from tetra pack).

Pero last week nagka plugged ducts ako and both the government clicni and LLL here were so quick to respond and help.

re: Breastfeeding Pinays

Bihira na ako magbasa dun...either bangayan or payabangan lang eh. Pero xmpre merong mga very informative infos lalo na from the admins.

I can't blame them.

Good luck breastfeeding mommies!!! :)

Mix fed kami dati from 3months to 3.5years(35% fm).

Wala naman akong nakitang kayabangan or what.

Minsan nagrereply but most of the time hinde hehe.

kayo mommies, pano niyo nasurvive yun? tia!

^ naku sis, masakit talaga yan. One time tiniis ko talaga na wag sya padedein for a few minutes. After nya bite, napasigaw talaga ako, then tinanggal ko nip then kinausap ko sya na "please don't bite Mommy, it's ouchie. No biting. It hurts Mommy so don't do it again".

Sharing. From Mommy Mec(Admin) of Breastfeeding Pinay.

Mommies who mix feed or formula feed...

I am reviving an old article I wrote for Rappler, please do read it. Because it is just so tiring to have to keep monitoring posts expressing sentiments of being judged day in and day out, esply now that it's Breastfeeding Month.

Please... It isn't that we breastfeeders do not care about your stories or your feelings. It's just that IT IS NOT OUR FAULT that you did not get, or aren't getting, the right information and support.

Breastfeeding will have its challenges. Others are blessed to have the right info and support from the get go. Others are blessed with ideal circumstances. Still, most do not have those But were just really rabid and creative in finding ways and making ways.

And it is US breastfeeders who aren't stopping so milk companies do not continue fooling you, so that the government and hospitals and employers will back you up. Progress is slow but there has been progress.

And please do not use "times are different now" arguments to excuse or explain your decision to mix or formula feed. Instead, own your choice and live with it. Because for every mother out there who had a preemie and mix/formula fed, there are others who breastfed. For every mom who had mastitis or other conditions and stopped breastfeeding, well there are those who had the same and continued. For every working mom hassled by traffic and commute and leery colleagues that stopped, there are those who persevered. And most working moms lived hand to mouth in terms of supply... Those who can pump bottlefulls are exemptions... And heaven bless them for the times they can donate.

And for every mix feeder or formula feeder who was outrightly judged and made to feel sh!t by a breastfeeder, there are breastfeeders who suffered the same from the hands of a formula feeder. Meanness and lack of compassion isn't the domain of just one camp. But we are trying our best not to have that happen here in BFP.

And breastfeeding success has nothing to do with luck. Please. There is no luck involved in having to pump/express all the time when away from baby. There is no luck involved in suffering through teething and growth spurts and illnesses wherein baby refuses to unlatch. There is no luck involved in having to arrange your life according to feeding schedules. There is no luck involved when you have to stand your ground against husbands, parents or doctors. There is no luck involved in training your baby to go back exclusively to the breast after separation or nipple confusion. Only grit... Determination... And maybe survival instinct.

Mommies... With the right attitude, information and support, you can triumph.

Is that putting pressure on you? Yes. Is that bad pressure though? No. Because again, breastfeeding benefits both you and your baby. You are designed to feed your child. You are designed to benefit from feeding your child. The benefits are long-term. The benefits cannot be replicated by anything else. It is not bad to put that pressure on you because frankly, you alone can do it. It's nobody else's job. Same way that nobody else can birth babies but you.

You might think it unfair but I hope you have a change of perspective instead. When God, Nature or Evolution designated you this role, it also made sure you are repaid by making sure you get protected from diseases that would otherwise take you away from the things and people you love. It is a good bargain, a good exchange deal. This is an opportunity life is presenting you... That you get to be healthier with each child that comes out of you.

But yes, you need support... For systems to be in place to help you. We are working on that. Work with us too.

Please.

Quit reducing breastfeeding (or not having done so) to pure sentiment. It doesn't do anybody any good.

If the moon cared for the wolves howling at it, it may not shine and light the way for travelers... Or inspire romance in lovers.

The same is true for you and us... There will always be people bashing us for choices we make, but so long as we are doing what's right, why be bothered by all that noise?

And breastfeeding will always be right for you and your baby... This generation and the next... Just maybe not as easy or convenient as we'd like.

But again, we are working on that. Work with us too.

Claim your destiny.

wow! that's quite the read sis airwaterfire. ako it helped that I approached breastfeeding with the mindset that breastfeeding is natural and although it will be difficult, I will succeed and that formula is not an option for me. so for each 'hurdle' it was just matter of finding the solution and moving on. I did not have formula as a back up option. I kept in mind how the very survival of the human race depended on our ancestors being able to breastfeed, if a cave woman was able to sustain her child. How can I not?

Repost(Courtesy of Breastfeeding Pinay Admin Mec Camitan Arevalo):

Babies Need to Suck and Suckle...

Gagawin ko nang post.

When your baby makes sucking motions and cries after feeding, it is not necessarily a sign that you don't have milk or only have little milk or baby is dissatisfied or you are a failure as a mom.

Babies were made to suck. As early as 15 weeks IN THE WOMB, they are thumb sucking! Am sure some of you have seen this in ultrasounds. They were programmed to suck even before they knew how to swallow (remember they get food via umbilical cord in utero?).

This prepares them for breastfeeding.

This also prepares them for talking and thinking.

This comforts them.

Outside, constant/comfort sucking is crucial to regulate their breathing/swallowing... Regulate Their heartbeat (if they're suckling from you)... Get warmth and be held (touch boosts immune system).

They do not NEED so much milk Kaya forever sila naka-latch. And that's partly why very biodigestible Ang milk natin (madali matunaw) para they can suck 24/7 Pero Hindi sasabog yung tyan sa busog. But they NEED Mommy's warmth and comfort.

That is God, or Nature's amazing design. May purpose yung sucking for the long term.

So when a baby still sucks and fusses to suck, suckle them. Nurse them. Breastfeed them. But do not think it's a problem (it is exhausting though) of supply. No. It's a need to be comforted.

And some babies NEED to be held/suckled more than others.

And sick babies need to suckle more than well babies. That's how they tell you they need more of a particular protection.

And scared babies (like in new surroundings or kaka-vaccinate lang) need to suckle more. It appeases them and makes the world right for them.

That's how you remove the NEED. Fulfill it, and baby will grow confident and secure.

So, next time baby asks more of you, breathe deeply, stay calm, feed.

The solution is to breastfeed more often or longer. And that way, your baby helps you make more milk.

It is a good system
smile emoticon
The simple reflex in the womb serves a higher purpose that ensures, not just baby's survival (creating the demand so supply will be produced), but also baby's well-being (Kasi nga babies have social, mental, emotional needs as well).
