Hello mga sis, just wanted to share what I learned last night sa class ko. We had 5 classes and this last class las night spent 2 hours troubleshooting the problems of breastfeeding. Lactation  specialist yung nagdeliver ng class.

- Baby to latch and have skin to skin within 30mins to 1hour after being delivered
- Sleep when baby sleeps (last week yan din ang main point na sabi saamin. Wag na muna isipin ang "Me" time kasi pag inisip mo pa daw yun...pagod na pagod ka na while caring for the baby at lalo ka mahihirapan)
- Do what works best for baby and mum - Kung sobrang nakakastress magbreastfeed, ok lang naman daw magsupplement ng formula kasi pag stressed ang mum, bababa din daw ang supply. Just as long as nagbbreastfeed padin daw. Irerecommend na breastfeed all the way, pero yun nga, pag talagang stressed na...you can supplement.
- Colostrum for the first few days is JUST what your baby needs, about 2.5ml per feed. Sobrang liit naman daw ng stomachs nila eh (like glass marbles!) and their stomachs will get bigger when the milk comes in.
- It takes 6-8 weeks to establish breastfeeding, takes 3-5 days before milk comes in, first few days colostrum lang.
- During the time na colostrum palang, either breast will do. But when milk comes in, kelangan 1 breast per feed -- kasi daw kung papalit palit...hindi makukuha ni baby ang hind milk -- kundi panay fore-milk lang.
-Get to know your breast so you know kung may lumps, kung may problem, kung may milk pa, kung engorged and kung worse pa (mastitis)
- "Do a burger" (sorry UK ang midwives haha! mga terms nila nakakatawa minsan!) - flatten your breast for the baby to suck -- not just the nipple but the dense area bandang areola. Nipple to nose first then when the baby opens the mouth, lagay na si baby sa breast. Make sure your nipple is hitting the back of the ngalangala. Soft part yun eh so di tayo masasaktan mummies! Always baby to breast daw, not breast to baby :)
- Baby will suck your breast and will create a vacuum, wag daw huhugutin si baby, laging ilagay muna tip ng pinky finger para mawala ang vacuum then pull baby away.
- For sore nipples, best daw ang colostrum/breastmilk to be spread sa nipples then a bit of fresh air.
- Your baby will make more milk for you than any pump. Pumping should start at about 6 weeks and hindi enough na pump ka lang. Massage your breasts first to stimulate then pump then hand express after, kasi di daw naeempty ng pump ang breasts, kelangan may hand expression pa sa huli. Then cold compress.
- Breastmilk is easily digested kesa sa formula kaya they get hungry faster so they'd cry sooner. Feeding takes up to 45 mins per feed and no more than 3 hours in between feeds (baby sleeping or not!). Baka daw kasi magstarvation mode si baby at lalong maging sleepy.
- If they are breastfed, di daw kelangan na palagi silang biniburp. Do that when they're awake..pero kung nakatulog naman daw after mo ibreastfeed, leave the baby alone. Also pag formula fed...kelangan talaga daw iburp every time.
- Night feeding should be the last one to be stopped.

Ayun lang mga sis! Sana kayanin natin ang mag breastfeed and not be stressed! :D

Agree with night feeding :)

It was the main reason I got my sleep at night plus co-sleeping!

I read from babycenter na it's normal daw specially for babies 6weeks onwards kaya lang parang nakaka-worry pa rin.

question here,  may mga bawal bang kainin during breastfeeding like caffeine or coffee bawal ba during breastfeeding? alam ko alcohol bawal hindi naman ako umiinom ng alak. coffee drinker kasi ako kaya medyo concern ako.thanks

^ sis join ka breastfeeding pinays. dami info dun. actually alcohol is okay in moderation. a glass won't hurt. nalimutan ko na link pero kay dr. jack newman they did a research on this one and it turns out in small amounts hindi nakaka apekto ang alcohol sa breastmilk.

as for bawal kainin, wala naman. except lang if you notice some allergic reactions kay baby. there are moms sa breastfeeding pinay group na nagstop kumain ng certain food kasi mukhang allergic si baby nila but under normal circumstances, wala talaga bawal. coffee in moderation is not bawal either. even meds, konti lang ang bawal. just make sure you're hydrated lang all the time. best parin syempre well balanced diet. pero a bit of coffee, a bit of alcohol won't hurt.

Super sakit at first pero worth it when you see your baby grow healthy.  If magkasakit man, mas mabilis gumaling.  Effort lang talaga for us working moms, and that's where pump comes in, and full support of the husband :)

Anyone experience less milk output from pumping during the day? I can pump 2 oz every 2 hours during the night til early morning, but when the clock hits 8am my output decreases, i can get 1.5 or just 1 oz lang. My baby feeds every 2 hours so needs 2 oz.

^ I read somewhere na mas madami daw talaga output natin late at night until the wee hours of the morning. Kaya for those building a stash, sina-suggest to pump na ganung oras..

Alcohol is okay, coffee too, etc. Moderation is the key. When drinking alcohol, just make sure you're not too tipsy na medyo maapektuhan ang capacity mo to care for your baby. Baka bigla makatulog while carry si baby or something.

I drink a glass of red from time to time, after makatulog ni baby sa gabi. Personal decision ko lang to wait at least an hour or two before I make feed/pump. Or I drink lots of water after para mas mabilis ma-dilute sa system.

For food, ganun din, everything in moderation as long as walang any adverse reaction kay baby. Some babies kasi react when their Moms eat egg or chicken or dairy, etc, nagrarashes.

Ako naman, I just lessen the level of spicy-ness in my food. I noticed kasi that when I eat super-spicy stuff, then I direct-feed my baby, medyo nagiging fussy and gassy sya. Other than that, wala naman ako in-adjust sa diet ko.

ilang minutes after ko manganak, as in nasa delivery room pa lang, pinalatch nila si baby sakin, nafeel ko may tumulong milk while doing that. siguro yun na yung colostrum ba yun?

gave birth last 12/24/2014, NSD, baby boy :D

^ Continue mo lang sis. Even if you think aburido si baby or not satisfied, meron at meron yan! Importante sa lahat, BELIEVE that you have milk, kahit feeling mo dry or walang lumalabas, even if its painful or cracked and bleeding. Lahat yan normal, na sagot na yan dito sa GT so many times. :) Back read ka lang for more helpful tips and information. :)

Kaya mo yan sis! Ilang days pa lang naman si baby.

Remember:
1. Let baby suck 24/7. YES! 24/7 :)
2. Skin to skin to let baby feel the warmth of your body and so as your heartbeat.
3. Massage your breast and warm compress can help.
4. BELIEVE that you have milk. BREAST IS BEST.
5. Baby will lose weight in the first week, thats NORMAL. Baby will regain it once your milk comes in.

Btw, my baby is an exclusive breastfed baby for 5 months now  8) I am a working mom from 8-5 and I usually come home around 7-8PM (OT or traffic). My work is soooooo stressful and pumping in the office is also limited due to my busy schedule. BUT, my point is, I can still manage (THANK GOD) for exclusively giving my baby my most precious liquid gold despite of my busy schedule. :) Thank you to my supportive husband and mom in law.

So sis, your journey in BF has just started. You have a long way to go and so am I. Again, just BELIEVE in the power of your breastmilk.  8)

Hope this helps.

^^ sis, congrats sa baby! :)

Massaging your breasts may also help. Basta, don't give up agad. Palatch lang ng pa-latch. In my experience, first two weeks pinaka-challenging for me re breastfeeding, especially since cs ako. After that, medyo tolerable na. Mag-7mos na si baby tomorrow. :)

I know it will not be easy but i'm dedicated to breastfeed my first baby. So i always tell her na galingan niya ang pag-latch paglabas niya. We just need to believe na may milk tayo.

I'm so glad I joined GT dami ko nalalaman. I joined Breastfeeding Pinays narin kahit [textspeak!] pa si baby para makapag prepare narin. Waiting to be accepted sa group (filled out the form na). Gusto ko talaga EBF and no formula. Can I give her water o hayaan ko lang basta regular ang pag latch? 3-5 days sya walang kain?

^sis based sa lactation consultant ng classes namin...colostrum ka muna begore the milk comes on after 3-5 days and that is just what the baby needs. No need for water din. Normal din na maglose sila ng weight after being delivered hindi dahil kulang ang colostrum...also dont need water kasi very very small lang daw stomach ng newborn (like a glass marble!) So colostrum lang ok na. Lalaki tyan niya pag nagkamilk ka na. Impt din na pag breastfeeding daw one breast per feeding para both fore milk and hind milk ang makuha ni baby -- habang colostrum palang kahit aling breast ibigay kay baby.

^thanks..kasi I've been told na pwede daw water. Hindi pala. I'd rather colostrum lang inumin nya. Sana lang magkaron ako agad ng supply. May 10 weeks pa ako to get ready. May difference ba pag ngayon pa lang mag malunggay supplements na ako? I'm living somewhere na walang malunggay eh. Thanks po

^ hi sis, I hope ma-accept na membership application mo sa Breastfeeding Pinays group. dami mo matututunan dun including your concern na sana magkaroon ka milk.

Meron yan sis, kahit ngayon if you stimulate your breast enough (wag lang ngayon, it may cause contractions hehe) lalabas ang colostrum mo. lalo na kapag nalabas na placenta ni baby when you give birth kasi it signals the body to produce prolactin to start the let down ng milk. production starts when you're pregnant, not when you give birth.

tama din lahat sinabi sis preggygielian. mature milk (yung white) comes in after 3-5 days basta continuous ang stimulation ng breast through baby's suckles. pero colostrum is a milk din, a very healthy and important milk in fact. it is produced even before you give birth. you noticed your breasts get bigger during pregnancy? yun na yun sis. during baby's first few days of life it is the only milk they need as their stomach is only the size of a marble or in volume, 5-7ml capacity lang nila. even if you don't see it, when baby is latched on properly, meron at meron nakukuha yan. basta may output si baby (wiwi/poop) may nakukuha sya.

hehe. :) when  you're approved na sa breastfeeding pinays, you'll read about this a lot. hindi totoong kulang ang milk ni mommy, isa kasi to sa mga myth that causes moms to stop breastfeeding. mommy makes as much milk as the baby needs basta feed on demand si mommy.
