Quinoa - "The Slimming Superfood"
« on: November 08, 2013, 05:24:40 pm »
Halu mga sis! Me and my friends learned about this slimming superfood recently. It's an alternative to rice and it's super healthy! The only catch is that it's quite expensive here in phils. Have you tried the quinoa rice diet? Share your insights! :D

Healthy Options.

Somebody nutritionally qualified hopefully answers my question: Does it jack up one's uric acid level? TIA

aquacharly,

I eat a lot of quinoa. although they all give the same amount of vitamins and minerals etc, i favor the black ones. hehe sanay din kasi ako kumain ng black rice.

i don't eat a lot though.

its almost a complete food and high in protein for something that "small."

i think it shouldn't. but we all know excess protein can lead to high uric acid levels.

http://www.livestrong.com/article/282327-foods-okay-to-eat-to-prevent-high-uric-acid/

Whole grains are rich sources of vitamins, such as folate, minerals, such as magnesium, and fiber. Replacing processed carbohydrates, such as enriched breads, pasta, cereals and snack foods, with whole grains may reduce symptoms of gout, according to the University of Maryland Medical Center website. Whole grains also support weight management and appetite control, since they provide more satiation than refined grains. As naturally low-purine foods, whole grains fit well within a controlled uric acid level diet. Though whole wheat is the most common grain in America, other grains, such as oats, spelt, brown rice, wild rice, popcorn, barley and quinoa, provide unique nutritional benefits. Consume a variety of whole grains regularly for maximum benefits.

Last Dec 2011, I had my first "gout" attack. my left big toe, kung saan siya nag join with the next big toe. but that was it. maybe it was all the Christmas food that was given to me because i was the guest ba (dinalaw ko relatives ko sa Canada, at that time I had not seen them for almost a decade ba).

2013, started eating quinoa and other whole grain foods. no gout attacks whatsoever since 2011.... im 80% vegetarian naman.

I like them a little bit gnawy so i use less water when i cook them. sometimes when i eat my salad, i'd sprinkle them over the vegetables.

mahal din dito sa Australia and even in New Zealand. a close friend of mine , who lives there recommended it to me, mahal din daw.

lahat naman ng whole grain ay Carbohydrates. kaya lang naman "hindi siya nakakataba" is because the breakdown of such food is slow, therefore the absorption is slow. time released kumbaga.

but still, if the volume is high, you eat more than you burn, tataba ka pa din. lalo na if you have unknown hormonal or medical problems, kasi they disrupt the body's
metabolism process.

and quinoa, compared to other whole grain foods, has high levels of protein.

^^ thanks bro akthung. so far i read blogs about it and palaging maganda ang feedback about quinoa. Filling food sya so mabilis kang mabusog and matagal ka rin ata magugutom... not sure about the latter. Di lang sya basta basta for weight loss but about eating healthy in general. Antioxidant pa raw plus other benefits!

Sa healthy options yung alam kong mabibilhan nito and it costs about Php 300 per cup i think? Yes, per cup! Or may pack din, around Php 700+ for about 26 oz (di ko sure 'to) Nakakaloka. But if you buy outside the country, like US ata, it's still pricey pero less than here in phils. Where do you buy yours, @akthung?

Dito sa area ko in Australia, it's available sa grocery stores, markets and whole food stores. plus/minus $8 dollars per kilo galing south american countries. a lot come from peru. so thats roughly 324+/- pesos per kilo.

again kaya nakakapayat dahil slowly sya nadidigest at hindi lahat nadidigest ng body (fiber) excess blood sugar ang nakakataba,

yes but some people do not like microwaving their food.

hope it helps. it's considered as a super food: nutrient dense. high fiber.

quinoa is a super food.

how is it super?

a half cup of quinoa is jam packed with nutrients compared to a half cup of white rice.

quinoa is high in protein, high in fiber, high in vitamins and minerals. foods with high fiber are slowly digested by the body (parang time released ang dating). and for a smaller amount of calories, you get so much nutrients to feed your body.

hence it is very useful in weight management.  On the other hand, white rice while being far less dense in nutrients, is easily converted into blood glucose.

so for those with inefficient metabolism and other metabolism problems, the increased levels of blood glucose, sugar in other words, will be converted to fat.

now if blood glucose is high, during exercise the body will focus on reducing your blood sugar levels before tapping into any reserve fat.

so if you're able to control sugar levels, your body can easily tap the fat reserves and result in the reduction of fat and overall body weight. (that is if you're eating to lose weight/fat) eating foods like quinoa, can help in the overall management of health

I love quinoa since I've discovered it! You can use it in so many ways too - on its own like rice, mixed into a salad or even form into patties!

I used to buy from Healthy Options but it's pretty expensive. I then discovered the A&F brand from S&R, 900 pesos for 4 lbs! Not bad na!

So if this is a rice substitute, you can eat it with ulam? Ive checked quinoa recipes online, it always includes mostly vegetables/fruits.
