sobrang nakakalungkot lang talaga isipin ang mga ganitong pangyayari,mapabata man o matanda lahat nagdurusa sa bohol quake.it's almost 1 week simula ng nangyari ang lindol dun bat everytime you watch their situation there,this will give you the courage to help them in any ways more so ang pinakailangan nila ay Panalangin.And you feel Thankful and blessed kc kahit you have just enough your not going through something like them.kaya sa araw araw sana isama natin sila sa mga dasal natin.GODBLESS us all.

kaya dumadami na ngayon ang mga Preppers, dahil the most reliable person in such a scenario will be yourself.

yung ibang troubles naman ng pinas e gawa ng tao. hindi ba't noong araw, kahit umulan/bumagyo ng malakas, hindi naman nagbabaha ng basta basta.

as for earthquakes, sadly, people buy houses along fault lines and developers never bother to consult geologists. kung may alam sila na hindi maganda, tahimik na lang sila.

I've recently been exposed to preppers and i really admire some of them. not the interesting ones ha. (ie end of the world type) kahapon lang, they were reviewing the faultlines of manila. some of them purchased houses far from faultlines years/decades ago. some have sold their houses na. yung mga may kids na pumupunta sa school na malapit sa fault eh nilipat nila ng school.

bottomline is that they are being VERY pro-active. they plan for various scenarios. invest in gears. may mga bug out vans, bug out bags, network, radio network, etc. some have even grow their own crops etc.

as for their homes, nagawan din nila ng paraan.

i think every pinoy right now should be a practical prepper.

Remembering the 1990 quake, people had also made a big fuss about building codes, repairs, etc. Pero as usual, ningas cogon, noong nalinis na ang paligid, people went back to their old ways. Call me jaded but I think the same thing will happen this time. Mas magaling sa hindsight ang karaniwang pinoy.

Preppers are getting a bad rep as crazed gun-toting doomsday hoarders. Post WWII so-called 'prepping' was nothing unusual; people back then had not been that dependent on the gov't or for handouts, at hindi sila sigurado how long the time of plenty will last kaya masinop sila sa gamit.

Take for example Bohol's current situation: nagkakagulo at nadedelay at pinupulitika pati ang pagdistribute ng relief goods. Sa dami ng affected areas, madaanan man sila ng relief, di na alam kung kelan mauulit. I won't allow my family to starve for a week or more without potable water and the most basic of necessities. Generally useless ang government natin lalo na sa widespread destruction.

Kung bibili ka ng lupa at magpapagawa ng bahay, take note din ang mga tao at structures sa paligid mo. Matibay man ang bahay/building na pinagawa mo, pero yung kadikit mong building mahilig sa short cut...pag lumindol madadamay bahay mo pag humampas dito yung nagibang structure ng pasaway na kapitbahay. At kung yung sa 'yo lang ang natitirang bahay na nakatayo, where do you think people will flock over for shelter and sustenance? Disasters bring out both the best and worst in people. Mas maganda kung ikaw at neighbors mo are like-minded in disaster preparedness.

alam ng mga preppers yan na when SHTF maaaring bahay lang nila or sila lang ang nasa "comfort" zone. kasama na sa prepping yan. in fact its a basic problem and a common question,  and there are many solutions. e di sana hindi na sila nag prep. hehe

as for the buildings shortcut etc, lahat yan napagplaplanuhan. again, prepping is about thinking ahead. if you have to leave your place for another because some idio(t) did something, then so be it.

Yesterday nga i told a few preppers in a certain thread na they can't expect every one to be a prepper kasi it takes money. prepping is like buying a first aid kit, kung maswerte ka for the next 3 years, you won't be able to use it. in a way its money gone. in the same manner, souping up your house, car, bag, other houses etc etc costs money. supplies too and a lot of them have expiry dates. and ang taong isang kayod, isang tuka will not think of prepping.

as for all the problems, if there's a will, there's a way. pinoys kasi madami satsat, excuses and counter arguments etc.,  aside from having short term memory. a lot of these i learned when I left Pinas. you only get to see who you are, what your country is, who your kababayans are etc, when you get to get out. mentality yan eh.

politics is killing pinas. kasi ang tulong talagang napupulitika. maraming gustong tumulong at pwedeng tumulong. look at what happened to Christchurch. dami tumulong. alam ng mundo corrupt ang pinas. When that thing in Bohol happened, ano sabi ng foreigner friend ko? pano makakatulong eh corrupt sa inyo? sapol! ang hirap din kasi sa ibang politician, pag nasapawan sila ng taong sinserong tumulong, eh gumaganti sila to teach a lesson. kaya kahit maraming mayayaman sa pinas, karamihan ay takot tumulong. at yung kakaunting tulong, napupulitika pa lalo. yun din pa naman ang mga binoto ng mga tao. garbage in garbage out.

as for being with like minded neighbors, nako, pinoy pa, never nagkaisa. even in prepping sari saring opinion. best talaga is to rely on your self, alot a few stuff na ipangtutulong mo when something happens, and lie low, don't tell/show that you're a prepper.

the best thing we can do is to be prepared, make you own emergency grab bag (ideally for 3days)
you can place:
important document on a Ziploc bag to prevent from being wet
first aid kit
medicine (for maintenance or any special medication need)
zippo lighter (for easy fire starter to keep you warm during cold nights)
enegry bar/food
water
clothes (place something that is easy to dry)
flashlight
portable radio
other.

Part of your go-bag should be:
candles
paracord or its equivalent (20-50 feet would do)
a whistle
emergency lightweight thermal blanket
betadine (can be used also to purify drinking water)
water purifying tablets
small headlamp
duct tape or its equivalent
multitool/swisknife/small folding knife
small cooking pot  that you can use to boil or even cook something in it. I use what is called a canteen cup.

napkins (can be used as gauze pads. Our Scout Rangers use Whisper, with wings in Mindanao)
bright orange shirt (it can be seen from long distances. A big piece of cloth called orange panel are always carried by US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq for easy ID by coalition aircraft and other ground troops)

There are sellers in sulit of MREs (Meals-Ready-To-Eat), and i think are far better than most of our energy bars. Just always check the expiration dates. Back then, you can buy MREs in Cash n Carry in Makati but after a media outfit wrongly reported that those MREs might've actually came from the American donations for Yolanda, they stopped selling it there.

Your go-bag should also not be cumbersome to carry aound and always ready. Hence, the name. =)

i think for pinas, ideal is:

1. a go bag that you can run with. the fewer items in it the better. the go bag should also blend as pwede ka maging target ng looters.

2. gain, increase and polish your survival skills so you'll be a Macgyver during disaster time - being able to move with minimal gear and creative enough to make do with what's around you. of course sino bang ma ayaw ng tools or gadgets. pero pag nahulog, nawala, nasira, you can still move.

your skills and go bag should just be enough for you to make it to your Bug Out Location.

AFAIK, after the Bohol earthquake some government agencies and others are updating the data (casualty and damages) of the 18 earthquake models that was made for NCR Region/Manila, especially now that it was found out that the West Valley Fault actually extends to Angat Dam in Bulacan, and that the movement of that fault line is overdue. Those 18 models are public and can be accessed online, and what came out of the 18 models are really worrisome, to say the least. A lot of the models were predicted to be under intensity 9 if i'm not mistaken. So let's be prepared, at all times.

ang pagkaka intindi ko is, every so so number of years (periods) may major earthquake. the thing is, nag lapse na ang ilang periods at wala pang Major earthquake. so dapat nagkaroon na pero hindi pa. so anytime na talaga it can happen.

It is essential that all family members are adept at basic survival skills as well, para alam nilang kumilos kung sakaling nag-iisa sila, or wala/injured ka. If you have kids, bring them outdoors. Take them camping. Teach them how to swim. Get Red Cross BLS/first aid training. Practice using your tents, paracords, camping stoves, etc. They'll have fun without them realizing you're training them, or at least they'll learn stuff plus family bonding. Even at backyard barbecues they can learn how to cook using a grill.

Exercise. Keep fit and healthy. You have all the gear and the perfect emergency bag, pero hindi mo naman mabuhat. Practice walking, hiking, climbing using your bag. If you're sedentary with a penchant for bulalo and crispy pata, asa that you can carry a 40-pound backpack for 10 km without giving yourself a heart attack.

Earthquakes will always be a part of Philippine life. Kaya hangga't maaari, i-minimize natin ang damage na pwede nitong ibigay sa pamilya natin. Plan well where you'll live, plan well how you'll build your homes. Prioritize your spending and accumulate what you'll need for an emergency. Prepare and train everyone in your family. Hopefully we won't need to use these during our lifetime, but, like insurance policies, it's better to have it and not need it, than to need it and not have it.

Tama. Our go-bag should be like that. I'm about to buy one of those old Nokia cellphones na no bells-and-whistles kumbaga. It is sturdier, and the battery lasts longer. It will become part of my EDC. Part of my EDC is asurvival keychain (one with small knife and can opener) and a small penlight.

Taga NIGS pala mother mo dati. Ang isang sabi-sabi sa min dati sa Diliman,eh kaya andun yung NIGS kase may malaking pang measure ng Marikina Fault Line na nakabaon dun and that NIGS has to be built around that equipment.  O nga, it is true that in every given period, the West Valley Fault Line moves, and its history showed that it always does, and that tama ka na we're long overdue for the big one at ineexpect na nga yun anytime.

Though meron colleagues ang mom ko na ang specialty nila ay yung marikina fault.

oo tama. practice lang ng practice. tuwing dumadalaw nga ako sa Pinas, akyat kami bundook to practice.

maganda din yung magpractice ng "Armageddon medicine" or the SHTF medicine etc...they're all the same. para alam ang alin pwede gawin kapag malayo ang tulong.

some of my friends even hunt and skin their game. hehe

It's scary if a major earthquake hits Metro Manila soon cause even though we just had an earthquake drill and seminars when this disaster strikes us, I think most people are still not aware of what to do and some don't even believe that this is possible.

MMDA created two websites, bepreparedmetromanila.com and metromanilashakedrill.com, to raise awareness and promote safety.

And thank you for the tips guys. We all just have to be prepared to minimize the damage.
