Cloth Diapers Part 4

^ No, it's not true.  My niece who grew up with me and had been cloth diapered ay hindi sakang.  She's now 5 years old.  Also my baby boy, now 1 year 3 months, is cloth diapered and there is no sign that he is sakang.  And remember, before the disposable diapers were out in the market, our parents, grandparents had been cloth diapered before and they are not sakang naman.

switsunny, no..it's never too late to start cloth diapering   There are a lot of kinds out there and true, medyo nakaka-overwhelm but here are the basics:

INSERTS:
a) Prefolds - are what you call the normal lampins na may mga stitched guides na to make it easier when folding.  These lampins are used as inserts for diaper covers.

b) Fitted and Contours - are diaper-shaped lampins.  Think disposable diapers but in cloth.  These are also used with diaper covers because they are not leak-proof. 

There are also different kinds of liners that you can use to add absorbency to what you already have.  Microfiber is the most common while bamboo or hemp are the most absorbent making them perfect for overnight-use and heavy-wetters.  These liners can be used on top of prefolds or stacked together as inserts for outershells.

As mentioned above, prefolds, fitteds and contours have to be paired with diaper covers.  Meaning, you have to use waterproof shells/covers to prevent your mattress/seat/etc from being soiled.  These are also the cheapest system that you can use when you're starting out.

OUTERSHELLS:
a) Diaper Covers - are waterproof outershells that can be used with any of the inserts mentioned above.  They can be wiped and reused for 2-3x before washing. You have to use snappis or other diaper clips though to hold the inserts inside in place before putting this on.

b) Pocket Diapers - are also waterproof outershells but has pockets on the insides (front and bum area) where you can put the inserts to hold them in place.  These have to be washed as soon as the inserts are soiled.

c) All-in-one(AI) /All-in-twos (Ai2) - these are the most expensive kind.  Difference lang nila is that with Ai2, you can remove the inserts and replace them with new ones kapag naihian or may poo and still use the previous cover/shell for 2-3 more uses before washing them.  With AI, you have to wash everything once it's soiled.

^ may tanong lang ako sis, hindi ba mahirap maglaba ng maglaba ng cloth diapers? especially if its soiled with poop.

wala kasi kaming yaya eh and we are based abroad. Both working parents. 8 am - 5 pm shift. iiwan lang namin si baby sa caretaker. malamang di naman yun maglalaba since she wont be full time. ang hirap naman kung every 2 days maglalaba at baka mag cause pa eto ng rashes ni baby kapag hindi agad nahugasan lalo na kung na poop na niya.

naisip ko sa mga full time working parents na walang yaya, nake carry ba ng powers niyo ang maglaba pa after work? hindi ba kapagod? Im planning to brestfeed din kasi once I give birth and we know that infants don't sleep well at night so bukod sa pagod galing work, may halong puyat pa.

^ako sis, full time ako sa work. nagagawa ko lang gamitan si baby ng CD kapag i am around. after work ko, pinagpapahinga ko siya sa disposable. based from my experience, mahirap laba ng laba. pero nakakatuwa lang gamitin kasi alam mo na hindi mainit for baby. kapag nag pee or nag poop si baby ko, nilalabhan ko agad. nilalabhan ko with hot water para di siya manikit. ako lang ang matyagang gumagawa nito, kahit nakakapagod siya gawin, my happiness ako inside knowing na nakakahinga ang skin ni baby kapag gamit niya ito.

so far, I have 6 rafrafs na and later i'll buy some more from a mommy i've known sa forum. yey! kaka-start ko lang nung Saturday and yesterday, nagpoop si baby na mejo basa. mahirap tanggalin yung mantsa sa insert, mejo yellowish pa..pano ba? ok lang ba ibabad yun with a little soap? as of now, i'm using tollyjoy (sabong panlaba ni baby)

ang haba ng backread  at ang dami din choices for CD pero pricey din ah.. im still on my 22W pero i decided to sew my baby's cloth diaper. ang sarap lang ng feeling everytime nakakatapos ako ng nappy

^Wow sis dream ko din yan, makapag tahi ng sariling diaper. kaso parang di ko carry. running stitch lang ang kaya ko at di ako marunong gumamit ng machine (di ata ako masyadong nakinig nung home economics class namin nung high school hehe)

^ naku sis ako din as in zero knowledge sa pagtatahi. pero nakakagamit nako noon ng sewing machine (mano mano at electric) pero isang straight tahi lang. haha. madali lang sis, kaya mo yan! madaming patterns available online for free. nagsimula ako sa scrap na tela like old shirts para pagpraktisan. ayun, ok naman. sa una mahirap lalo na pagcontrol sa mga curve sides ng nappies.

i started reading about how to sew cloth diapers, view ng photos (blocked kasi youtube dito sa office). tapos ayun na. pati mittens, footsies, etc. DIY na lang

hello! meron din bang similar that my baby can use when he goes swimming? nilalagyan kasi namin siya ng diaper though we're not sure kung dapat nga meron. we're worried kasi na mag urinate siya or poop. kaya lang kasi sobrang inaabsorb nung diaper yung water hehe. parang i've heard of a reusable diaper for swimming? TIA!!!

^You're welcome and hope it works out for you. I've been told that Bamboo Dappy's fabric is really nice though I haven't had the chance to feel it for myself.

Got obsessed with (window) shopping for cloth diapers lately. Caved and got the Grovia stay dry soakers that go with the shells that I have even though it really burned a hole in my wallet at $17.95 for a set of 2. Was thinking of getting generic ones na lang kasi at first but decided to invest in a few of them. Got 4 pairs muna even though I have 5 shells kasi ang mahal na. I also got 12 Bumgenius 4.0s to add to those and the 3 Bambino Minky Diapers that I got way back. Stop na muna ko sa pagshopping for diapers kasi lampas na ko sa budget though alam ko hindi pa enough yung stash ko based on what moms are recommending. Iniisip ko na lang investment to for baby.

Siguro if ever magdadagdag ako I'll buy China or local nappies na lang. Earth Baby's piquing my interest and it's very reasonably priced so baka that's what I'll try later. Siguro next month hehe.
