braking techniques for manual cars
« on: July 31, 2013, 11:59:11 am »
Hi mga sis! Am still new to driving, and I still drive with an assistant on the passenger seat. I studied just this month sa driving school so hindi pa talaga ako magaling magdrive.

Anyways, kasi when I was in driving school, I was taught to use the clutch first and then brake when coming to a full stop. However, may nagsasabi I should press the brake first and then clutch. Kaso mas namamatayan ako pag ganon. And sabi naman ng biyenan ko who assist me on my driving practices, I should first place it in neutral and then assist na lang sa brakes. Hindi ko tuloy alam which one is the correct way? How  about you mga sis, anong ginagawa niyo? :)

Thanks in advance!

Hi, geekchiq.

It has been a long while since I last drove as our ride became a victim of Ondoy :P  Anyhow, mas correct yun approach mo as yun brake before clutch mamatayan ka indeed and kapag hindi ka alerto ay parang nagkakabayo ka ang labas.  Problem with the first approach kung mabigat ang paa mo using the clutch you get clutch burn.  A lot of bus drivers do this kaya mabaho madalas sa loob ng bus.

You use the clutch then indeed shift to neutral allowing the vehicle to glide on its remaining power then brake para hindi rin hirap sa makina.  That's what I was taught - and I did not go to a driving school at that.

Though I know in schools and in some books they advise a different approach.  Swerte mo lang if you can afford those cars that have sensors and do automatic braking.

^^thanks sis cityhunter for the tips.

^e sis gorgeous_me, di ba bago pa yung car mo? Tsaka sis meron pang hanging, good luck talaga.

^it happened to me din sis. I was causing traffic na rin plus umaatras pa ako and binubusinahan. Sabi ko bahala na sa gas, nilakasan ko tapak ko, pero nanginginig na left foot ko sa clutch. despite that, sabi ko sa sarili ko it won't stop me from driving. kahit napapagalitan ako ng biyenan ko, hindi siya magiging rason for me to stop. Although nakakakababa ng confidence. Kaya natin to sis.

Even those who have driven before tapos hahawak ng ibang sasakyan maari rin mamatayan.  The best thing one can do is find a place na hindi masyado matao at maraming dumadaan na sasakyan and doon ka mag-practice.  Important iyan hanging and curves maliban sa parking.

Mas tolerant ang diesel engine than gas though the latter gives better speed - not unless you invest in those hard to find Mercedes Benzes na Turbo Diesel.  Actually supercharger na yun not just turbo from what I was told.

Observe na yun mga madalas nadidisgrasya mga over-confident sa skills nila kaya ayun nauwi sa bangga or what.

Try to wear rin yun shoes you often use.  I've seen girls wearing heels driving confidently when ako need ko talaga tsinelas o even mag-paa even then :P  In time masasanay ka rin - though ako nasanay with diesel kasi so transition sa gas kaya ayun namamatayan - tapos nadale pa ng baha ride namin :P

Yup.  Wear shoes not slippers.  Naranasan ko na wherein sumabit yun tsinelas between the pedals.  No idea kung closed front slippers or what pwede.  Well, if those who are able to drive wearing normal shoes could give their input ay it would be highly appreciated!

when i was just a newbie driver, palagi rin ako namamatayan. kasama sa challenge yan ng manual driving.

lalo na kapag naka-hang.

what i do before is this: i make sure na hindi tututok yun nasa likod ko lalo na kung traffic - when i see them approaching, maghahazzard na ako tapos since nakastop ako kunwari paatras atras ako ng konti-konti. di na yun tututok. 100% effective. wala pang tumutok sa kin when i do this.

murahin nila ko for all i care. e sa hindi ko matimpla e di umurong sila para di madisgrasya. at least i warned them. usually kasi ang fear ng newbies e mapagalitan or mapagtawanan. when you feel nervous and you can't drive na as in your feet are shaking, stop. hayaan mo sila bumusina sa likod.  :P

kapag di ko talaga matimpla at nakahang. i use the handbrakes. it takes a little getting used to but you use whatever you can. mahirap magtimpla ng manual lalo na kung gas engine. easier sa diesel. hilahin ang handbrakes saka magtimpla. kapag natimpla na, slowly release the handbrakes and go...

this is what i did nun namatayan ako sa P4 parking ng shangrila. if you've parked there, you wouldn't want to have a dead engine in the middle. super inclined talaga sya at super curved. kung newbie driver, please wag muna itry magpark there. unless automatic drive ka.

the car behind me immediately backed up when it realized what was happening to me. and what's really funny is that i was laughing so hard - nawala ang nerbyos ko sa kakatawa dahil ninenerbyos yung kasama ko... he actually wanted to get out of the car and push it up. as if!  ;D

Ang biyenan ko wants me to achieve timpla timpla on hanging without using the brakes or even handbrakes, as in [textspeak!] gas and clutch lang. He simply depresses the clutch if traffic and gas when it starts moving.

Guytalker here just less post....

With regards to clutch driver, I dont let my foot rest on the clutch pedal naman. After shifting naman, I get to remove naman my foot from the pedal and rest it sa car floor. Although kapag I try to get out from parking or even sa mga eskenita, dun alalay with clutch talaga. Dito na ako nagiging clutch driver. Amd of course, when on an inclined road.

When it comes to braking, I do all of those techniques na depending on the situation kaya nagagamay ko na. :)

May I add really do practice and find time to check the vehicle before using it - which should be standard operating procedure.  I've handled some then na ang weird ng gap between the pedals.  Mayroon pa yun jeepney wherein the spring the helps bring back yun pedal gave out kaya nagkaproblema.

He he, trip ko iyang heel and toe technique but pag manalo na lang ako ng AE86.

And is there a difference doon sa mga kotse ngayon na may selector or something yun gearshift as in pwede sa automatic o manual?  Ha ha, halatang nahuhuli na sa panahon.
