Career as a MakeUp Artist

I want to shift my career as a make up artist sana pero di ko pa alam kung san maganda magenroll dyan sa pinas. Any suggestions? And also I would like to ask those make up artist here about their experience when they were starting. I hope you could give me some tips how to be successful in this career. Thanks

I'm a Makeup Instructor and Artist of The Makeup Artistry.
I just started last year and it's still my part time job.
Malaki talaga ang pera sa Makeup Industry but you still have to consider na madami ka ding ka kompetensiya.
In my case, i get paid more with in this Industry kesa sa current work ko in a BPO.
Yes, sa call center na ako nag wo work pero mas malaki parin yung pera na nakukuha ko sa pagtuturo ng makeup.
yung difference lang is walang benefits (HMO, leave credits,sss,philhealth,etc)
I suggest you study first and try mo muna as a part time job.

Mahirap talaga makakuha ng client sis.
There will be a right time for that.
kapag may nakuha ka nang client and she will like your service di ok.
From there, other people will see your works and if they like it, they will book you. =)
I'm really happy because The makeup Artistry has taught me a lot not just how to apply makeup properly but how to be professional in dealing with clients.
You can enroll sa amin If you want sis. =)
You can start from basic personal makeup.
Practice everyday.
Then, advance makeup and kapag ready ka na, Intensive Professional makeup naman. =)

I am not a make-up artist but I am a regular client of 3 make-up artists.

IMO, a good start is to squeeze as much technical knowhow as you can off the Internet.
Then, practice on yourself , & on willing "victims".
Then, after some degree of proficiency & level of knowledge -- go apply at a well-known "make-up school", then  train with one of the top international brands, or apprentice under a top/established make-up artist.
Or, you can just go establish yourself after undergoing a make-up course.

With this craft, you must really have the talent for it -- an artistic type of talent.
Just like with doctors, they kid among themselves that if a doc has no artistic talent or can't draw --  hindi puede maging plastic surgeon.

The Make-Up Forever "school" at The Burgos Circle (ewan ko what it is called now) is a good start to learning the craft.
But I think that isn't enough --  you must periodically take up short courses to keep updated with new trends & products.

Assuming you've gained proficiency & confidence, what then?
IMO:
1.  Build up an arsenal/mini warehouse of equipment & stocks.
     You need a lot to service a variety of clients.  How can you do great work if you don't have the tools? 
     
2.  Be creative, very.  You cannot paint a standard look on all faces.
     Each face is a different challenge.  Not 1 solution will apply to all.

3.  Have a hair partner.   I have turned away make-up artists who don't have somebody along that is a
     proficient hair stylist.  If it's say a group make-up, must have a junior make-up artist & another     
     hairstylist too.

4.  Be very hygienic -- with your equipment & stocks, and with yourself mismo.

5.  Be professional in your dealings

i'm building my ultimate arsenal, like i have a separate box for makeup, and another for hair. 

i have enough tools, makeups, etc. like every 2 weeks i buy stuffs, kahit yung tag less than 10 dollars lang. puno na yung box
ko pero wala naman ako mapagpraktisan lol.  most of my friends here in states are always busy and hard to find. kung
pwede nga lang may mannequin face na pwede pagpractise-an, tulad sa dummy head for hairdos. lol

when i have enough experience i will eventually go to school to study formal makeup lessons.

Thanks sa info, sis kiz_me marami ako nabasa good feedback sa The makeup Artistry, will check that school.mahirap nga daw talaga sa umpisa pero okay lang sakin sis aquacharly will check that school as well, thanks sa reply na masustansya. I always admire your post dami ko natutunan. @qt_ben goodluck sa tin, gustong gusto ko talaga kasi feeling ko masayang career to.

Right now nagaaral ako ng make up tutorial ni michelle phan sa youtube. I'm working here kasi sa middle east as FA pero magreresign nako next year because I will get married and future hubby doesn't want me to work na. E ayaw ko naman full-time house wife so kelangan magcompromise kasi, he will agree as long its not full time job. buti eto pumayag naman sya.  

Gusto ko sana yun mga brides or debutants

Brides and debutantes are ok sources --  but do not turn your back on others.

When I have my face and  hair done up -- at home, min. is 7thou. Max 12thou pag complicated hair -- hindi naman ako ganon ka pangit & hindi sherpei face ko.   hahaha

Pag naka  gets ka like my MIL and mom as clients -- na they will die if they do not get their faces painted for Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays plus whatever events they go to -- that is easily minimum 25thou per client for a few hours' work (sundo hatid ka  ng drivers nila) tax free for your off hrs --  before or after lunch.  Pang bayad koryente na.  The 2 badings that service them now - hair & make-up - earn together every week minimum 50thou from  them - not bad for a basic bottom line.  More if may event the 2 matronas (usually meron weekly) & when they go abroad (often) -- they ask the 2 gays ano pa buy nila make up or gadget abroad - yun pasalubong na.  So, that is a good way to start and to fund your warehouse of stocks. - nay may regular steady income ka.

BUT the big bucks is in entertainment. Ex. Bea Alonso specifies Sarte as her make-up artist for her commercials & related appearances. The company that contracts her to appear -- pays minimum 150thou per event to have her face and hair made-up. 

Yes, it's an exciting career, but hard work too.  Importante -- you always exude a calm positive pleasant aura to clients. And be very accommodating with regards to your clients' ' preferred time & service site. 
Be eager to please.  It can be very financially rewarding

I agree with sis aquacharly. Being a makeup artist is really financially rewarding. But you really have to take some time to practice. It doesnt mean na after you went to a makeup school e magaling ka na agad. you really have to practice almost everyday. Mas challenging ne hitsura, mas better. =)

When I was still a student, laging sinasabi ng chief Makeup artist namin not to be afraid to get a model na matanda, madaming acne, mahirap ayusin yung kilay, etc. We were even trained to put makeup sa guy/gays and kailangan maging mukhang babae sila talaga.

I am currently working in a call center right now. As much as I want to resign and look for another job with better pay, hirap na hirap ako. It's because I can't give up my new found career. Kung iisipin mo kasi, mas malaki talaga ang kita dito. You can work in just 4hours and get paid minimum of 5k/day. Kahit Manager sa Call center hindi kayang kitain yan. hehe

Also, being a Makeup Artist does not end in Makeup Services. May kilala ako na magaling siyang mag  makeup pero konti nalang naging clients niya after 2 years of her career. Kasi never siya nag try ng iba. Like joining Bridal Fairs, Doing personal makeup tutorials, etc.

Wow okay pala ang kita aside dun hawak mo pa yun oras mo. Di naman ako nag eexpect ng clients at money agad. Basta alam kong masaya ako sa gagawin ko, I think its a good start na for me lalo ako na eencourage dahil sa mga reply nyo.

Sis kiz_me. Ano pala maisusuggest mo na basic brushes na dapat ko muna matutunan. Yun akin kasi 4mini brush lang hehe.

yung magpaganda ng babae kahit anong age nila.yung kahit isang araw lang is natulungan mo silang iboost pa lalu yung confidence nila. but i need more practice. saka i have to build my tools pa! madami pang kakaining bigas. :-P

Just consider that money may seem easy as a celebrity makeup artist but not everyone gets to that level. A lot of women feel they have the knack for makeup so ang dami Talaga.

Once upon a time I dreamt of being a makeup artist too. Pero inayawan ko na kasi I pursued a more rewarding career. Naks.

Anyway, I still have friends in the industry. One friend won the contest by Mega Magazine that they showed on tv last year. Now, he travels all over the world (last month sa Finland, of all places!) for trainings and gigs. He's also the head makeup artist of a makeup brand.

Honestly, when he started, talagang  raw. Super practice lang talaga. And pro tip, before even thinking of attending beauty school, please make sure you already know how to apply makeup. Don't expect them to teach you the basic, etc.  Not only won't they have time to polish your skills for you (that's your responsibility), the main raison d'etre of makeup school is to make contacts. So kung magaling ka na while attending school, mas may kumpyansa mga tao na i-refer ka sa mga projects.

Makeup artist dint talaga gusto ko. mama ko kasi guto ng salon busniness. so need namin talaga mag aral kaso parang iting career na ito ay for side line lang..I am just starting to build my career pero gusto ko talaga mag shift ng makeup artist. Yung tita ko her foundation is TESDA and Rick Reyes makeup tutorial. jan siya nag enroll. and I guess this is enough forundation. nasa gamit/brand lang naman . tesda baby din naman ako before and I can really attest that we are competitive haha..kaya why not enrolling again. alam ko din magastos mag aral yung tita ko halos naka 100k dahil sakanila lahat ng gamit,. advantage is sayo lahat ng gamit so after graduation pwede na siya mag service. nakikita ko dins a iba na para maging effective at may marketing din. me mga model at me mga photo shoot. ayos nga din yun. I remember before as in mga ilang weeks nalang. ang benefit cosmetics s makati tumawag for my interview garbehh gusto ko na mag stay sa pinas kundi lang ako nag bayad ng placement fee. hehe opportunity na sana un!

If there is nothing to lose, just go and try this. My friend is having slow and steady clients na. As a business woman, i dont think what shes earning is enough. 5k to 7k for bridal and 2k for normal makeup but since shes happy. Ok lang i suppose
