During our 2010 European tour, we spent two weeks in Germany and a week in France. We did it DIY as usual. Our two week tour in Germany started in Wiesbaden and ended in Munich. This was how our tour went:
Arrived in Frankfurt in the late evening via KLM. We stayed with our friend in Wiesbaden (one hour drive) for two days. Wiesbaden is the place where Elvis Presley met Priscilla Beaulieu later becoming his wife. During our stay with our friend, nai-ikot nya kami around the city plus we drove along the Rhine river valley visiting the small towns and castles along the way. Very picturesque!
On our third day, we rented a car to do the
Romantic Road of Germany. We did the road trip for 8 days with some overnight stops and some two night stops in the small towns along the way.
Our first stop was in Wurzburg. If you are familiar with Orlando Bloom's movie The Three Musketeers, some scenes were shot at the Residence Palace. Dito na-frustrate kami kasi our visit na-timing na they were shooting the movie so they closed off the Palace to the public. Kaya nangyari sa amin ni hubby naki-nuod na lang kami sa shooting
Too bad we didn't get to see Orlando Bloom!
Our next stop was in Rothenburg ob der Tauber where we spent two nights. It is a walled medieval town. Grabe this town, ang ganda! Hubby and I stayed in a 500 year old B&B. Namumu pa ako dito!. I'll write all about it in my blog soon. Memorable din sa amin was our walk with the
Night Watchman. You do this tour at night with the town's "night watchman" kung saan ikwento nya yung history ng place.
Our third stop of the week was in Fussen where we based for another two nights. On the way to Fussen maraming small and picturesque towns along the way. Kaya hop on-hop off kami.
That's the great thing with DIY kasi pag may nakita kaming interesting I'll ask hubby to pull over and we'd explore the town.
From Fussen, it was just a 15 minute drive to one of the inspirations for Cinderella's castle, Schloss Neuschwanstein or Neuschwanstein Castle. Ludwig II the king of Bavaria that time died before the castle was completed kaya walang masyadong laman sa loob. Para lang syang shell. But it was definitely beautiful outside. Going up to the castle we took the bus and on the way down we rode on a horse carriage. Then it was just a short walk to the nearby Hohenschwangau Castle, Ludwig's childhood home.
From Fussen, we spent two nights in Garmisch-Partenkirchen (site of the 1936 Winter Olympics, they are now bidding for the 2018 Winter Olympics). We stayed here since it was only a half hour's drive away from Oberammergau where we were going to watch the Passion Play. The Oberammergau Passion Play is only held every 10 years, a sort of panata made by the townspeople to spare them from the plague way, way back. I wrote about it in my blog in case you want to learn more about it. Next showing is in 2020.
From GP, we then drove to Munich for our final stop where we returned our rental. We stayed in Munich for 4 days. Kung na-frustrate kami sa Wurzburg because of wrong timing, this time great timing since it was the 200th year of Oktoberfest kaya extra special their celebration (according to the locals). One whole day was spent sa Theresenwiese (where the festival was held). Saya! The next three days naman were spent visiting the sights and attractions of Old Town and Schloss Nymphenburg.
Munich is a pretty compact city. You can walk almost everywhere kundi naman you can always hop on their U-Bahn (underground train) or their S-Bahn (street-level train). Very easy lang and convenient their transpo system. We got their transport partner pass since dalawa kami ni hubby. We also got the
14-day Bavarian ticket good for all museums and attractions in Bavaria.
