Schools Requiring Tablets for Kids

Last week Don Bosco Mandaluyong announced that they're requiring Grabe 8 (2nd yr high school) students to purchase tablets since they'll be using ebooks already. They're asking us if we want Ipad Mini or OEM, ang choice namin is either 20k or 14k.

Sa school ba ng anak nyo ganito na din? Ang sakit sa dibdib at sa bulsa.  Ang iniisip ko na lang para sa anak ko lahat ito...

Ang tanong ko lang naman safe ba? Kasi yung soccer shoes nga ng anak ko may kumuha sa locker room nila, eh pano pa kaya yung tablet. haay!

Sa bigat ng books ng anak ko who is only in grade 3. I prefer this.

Sis parang tinuloy yata ng la salle eh. Downside lang is if you dont have a spare tablet and unfortunately something happened sa tablet ng anak mo sis. I have seen a mom with her kid sa powermac last year di makapasok yung kid kasi sira yung tAblet and andun yung books nung bata. So she is forced to buy a spare tablet so her kid can continue schooling while waiting for her ipad to get fixed.

Xavier for instance wants kindle. And pagdating ng certain grade, they need macbook na yata. Oh di ba naka specify ang brands... oh well I he csa won't follow. But we are also planning to buy my son his own macbook pag maybe hs na sya. Needed na nya rin by that time ng sariling laptop.

mas maganda nga ito kesa sa books.
problem nga lang pag nasira. good thing 1 year warranty naman almost lahat ng gadget. wag lang din mawawala kasi masakit sa bulsa..

my daughter is incoming grade 6 at st. scho marikina.
for the past months, mega survey sila on who is willing to avail of this MOLD (mobile learning device) program
ako for one ayoko sana because of the following reasons:
1. expensive! although sa survey may choices naman, from cherry mobile being the cheapest, samsung the most expensive one
 2. my daughter has her own ipad 2, bawal naman ipagamit. di daw pwede. kailangan pare pareho ang mga kids daw para walang inggitan.
3. so when they told me about number 3, i chose cherry na lang, pinakamura, tutal may ipad na sya e

and then last week, mega announce sila na di na itutuloy kasi mahal pala daw ipa wifi ang buong building!

bat di nila sinama sa study yun sa umpisa pa lang! time were wasted kaka survey, kaka attend ng meeting yun pala di itutuloy

what's worse. nagpatawag pa ng meeting, 10 mins eksakto, para lang sabihin na di na ituloy. sana nagbigay na lang ng
circular/memo inattach sa card nung release. tsk. nakakabwisit

anyways, im open to this naman sana, kawawa naman kasi daughter ko ang bibigat ng books nila! 15k sana yung amount nung tablet
then additional 1k yata for insurance, and almost 2k yata yearly download of ebooks

15k ang tablet ng cherry? Eh wala pang 5k ata yun sa mall...baket daw need ng wifi eh diba reading material yun like ebook?
Pag na access lang sya thru wifi wag na lang kase andun yung tendency na mag fb lang hahaha

Kahit mabigat mas gusto ko na libro dala ng anak ko sa school hindi tablet. Hindi naman lahat pupwede na puros convenience lang ang kunsiderasyon. Of course opinyon ko lang naman yan, marami ang gusto na d mahirapan ang anak kaso fact of life yan lalo na sa atin na nakatira sa pinas - na makakaranas talaga ng hirap.

I hope Ateneo and Assumption won't follow. Ang main concern ko dito is security. Knowing my kids, baka wala pang one week nawala na yung tablet nila.

Personally, I prefer the kids go traditional books pa din. Ang hirap kaya mag-review pag tablet. When you need to go back on pages, etc. Or sometimes, when a subject has 2 books and you need to see both at the same time and do comparisons or what, ang hirap.

Sis Jenny_syngkit, my son goes to Ateneo, too and when they did that survey last year about the option of switching to tablets, ay naku, puro "no" ang sagot ko talaga at ang hahaba ng mga explanation ko.

Kamusta naman, pag pinag-tablet yang mga yan, baka ilang buwan pa lang, naka-salamin na anak ko.

Plus issue of security and the kids knowing how to take care of their stuff. Eh mga anak ko pa naman, pag may naibagsak, sasabihin lang, "oops."

dadating ang panahon photos na lang ng libro ipapakita sa mga modern kids kasi extinct na. parang wall-E

i think magagawan ng paraan para di masyadong mahirapan mga bata sa dami ng dalang books. some countries which are more technologically advance than the PH can handle nga. still using real books and at the same time among the tops schools in the world.

my sis inquired din sa isang school sa QC.. they said tablet na nga raw pinapagamit nila sa students nila..

medyo nakakatakot nga pagamit lalo na kung iPad... for me this is fine... kasi atleast di na need magbitbit ng maraming books.
kaso parang delikado naman sa bata..

D ko lang alam if maeeganyo magbasa anak ko pag tablet, naassociate nya na tablet sa games at youtube.

^ true. can you still choose books over tablets or final na sa mga school yan? no table no entry?

what if you can't afford? di ba meron din mangilan-ngilan who are enrolled in private schools due to being intelligent. scholars in short.

andaming cons ng tablet. mahuhulog ng mga bata, sira. paayos mo na naman o bili na naman bago.

i want my kid to flip pages, the real one.
i want to help my child cover her books with plastic covers iba manila paper pa then plastic. haha
i want to put sticker names on them

tapos pwede mo pa ma recycle and donate to those who cant afford.

^Same sentiments here sis, at least pwede ko idonate ang books pagkatapos ng school year. With tablets, sira na talaga mata ng mga bata kasi pagdating ng weekend - computer/laptop or tablet for gaming since that's the only days na allowed silang mag internet/games.

Schools should think this over before implementing, ang arte naman 3rd world country - requiring tablets for school

baka reason din nila is to lessen the production of paper...although books are nice things to hold, we have to admit that, it is much faster to do research on computers/tablets/netbook/laptop with the help of internet.

kaso nga baka mas lalong madisgrasya mga anak natin dahil takaw hold up.

i also prefer books. kahit sabihin na convenient kasi wala na bitbit ang bata, di pa rin ako sold sa idea. bukod sa delikado kasi baka mawala o pag nasira, ipapagawa o bili ulit eh mas importante pa din sa akin na totoong libro ang binabasa ng mga anak ko. sa mga school naman ng mga anak ko iniiwan ang books pag walang assignment or exams, as in required na may extra bag sila for safekeeping of books na iniiwan sa classroom. saka, may lockers naman di ba na pwede ring pag iwanan ng books na di ginagamit or iuuwi sa bahay.

Tablets have such limited use - if the reason is to only use it for e-book purposes, there are cheaper options.

It would make more sense to have a laptop - at least the students can do other work on the laptop.

Some schools prefer a certain model or certain specs as their applications/books/activities will be customized to that particular brand (ie. MAC vs. windows)

WhenI was in HS (more than a decade ago!) we were required to buy a specific Texas Instrument scientific calculator. It was 5-6K at the time so my parents weren't happy about it. I tried using a casio calculator but I had such a hard time because there were certain functions they would teach you to execute on the TI that wasn't exactly the same on the casio. Also, there were "programs" that they shared which wouldn't work on the casio. In the end my parents had to buy me the TI.

Funny lang when I went to Ateneo, of course I brought along my TI, no one knew how to use it! Even the professors
