It says in the article that it is possible that Dr. Eisenberg was misquoted and what he was really saying was that he thinks ADHD is over diagnosed.
In my opinion, I do not believe that ADHD is a fictitious disease or disorder. I do agree though, that ADHD is an over diagnosed disorder. I don't think it would be fair to label a kid with ADHD based on a 1st visit or a 1 hour evaluation since there are a lot of factors to consider with regards to behavioral disorders. I also don't think that ADHD should be diagnosed as early as 3 or 4 years of age since kids that age are naturally active and curious of their surroundings. It used to be that the age of diagnosis was made at 6 to 7 years of age, when the child has already entered school since feedback from educators is also an important part of the diagnosis.
It is not wrong, though, to seek help when needed or to do early intervention when kids are at risk of developing disorder. First thing to do is to look around the home and see if there are things that are making the kid more active than usual like too much tv time or gadget time, too much sugary drinks, too much caffeine (Why are kids as early as 2 years of age being given Iced tea or tea based drinks? These drinks contain caffeine and can act as stimulants) being cooped up in the condo or the house all the time, not that much movement activities, etc. If modifying behavior in the home do not work, then you can have outside help in the form of OT or play therapy.

yung nephew ni hubby,may adhd raw..sobrang hyper,at sabi may multiple intelligence..grade 1 pa lang ngayon pero mula nung nag aral yun mula kinder,laging pinatalsik sa school kasi 1st day of school pa lang,sinasaktan niya mga classmates niya..nangangagat raw sa school..ngayon nga nung nalaman namin pinaalis rin sa ateneo,nanakit na naman..sa MI na nag school..mahirap lang kasi pag may mga batang naglalaro,ginugulo niya,tapos yung toys sisirain niya,mangtutulak ng bata kahit maliit sa kanya..tapos kung makitang nag ipad ako,kahit may ipad siya,aagawin niya yung sayo,hindi naman pinapagsabihan parang spoiled rin..sabi bawal raw kumain ng chocoltes,binibigyan pa ng mommy niya..kahit yaya walang tumagal dahil binabatukan ang yaya..yung anak ko nga isang beses nakita ko noon,hinihila niya sa binti,eh wala pang 1 taon dati yun,.ayun nagulat ako,simula noon nainis na ako sa batang yun..alam ko naman hindi niya ginusto yun pero pag sinabing masama yung ginagwa,hindi naman nakikinig,lalong ginagawa..kaya pag nandyan yung batang yun hindi ako lumalapit..sobra na kasi manakit sa mga bata tapos hindi man lang pinagsasabihan..

^ Is the child undergoing occupational therapy or behavioral therapy? If not, then, maybe you can suggest to the parents that the child undergo OT man lang to control his behavior.

Sometimes people would say na baka daw may adhd anak ko. Sobrang likot kase. At 25 months, he seldom walk, lagi takbo. Bago pa sya mag two, magaling na sya magjump at hop, yung naglaland talaga sa dalawang paa nya. I read somewhere na advance daw ang ganung milestone for kids below two. Di din siya nakakspag stay na nakaupo lang, max na ang 10 mins. challenge talaga when going out. Sana wala naman sya adhd. Im hoping na malikot lang talaga sya. Mahal ba ang therapy for adhd?

alam ko nag the-therapy yun.pero ang balita,papalit palit rin ng thera dahil di yata ganun nagbabago.yung parents kasi parang inaasa lang sa yaya lagi yung anak.hindi sila sanay na nagagalit sa mga bata pero hindi rin pinagsasabhan ng matino kaya hindi naman matuto mag behave man lang yung bata.

^ Most kids with ADHD have sensory integration issues kaya madalas silang napapagkamalan na clumsy, nakakabangga, etc. Their body craves movement and they need to release their energy so that they can function well kaya sila malikot. Kaya nga in most OT sessions, movement routines muna bago pagawan sila ng tasks. They function better when they have a set routine and a set goal rather than hindi nila alam ang gagawin nila sa time nila. Anyway, my point is, they need more understanding because their body has special needs. Kailangan lang what is done in therapy should also be continued at home, rather than sa session lang para hindi magfail ang therapy.

Hello mga sisses. Yung baby ko din na 11 months ngayon sinusupect ko na may ADHD. Yung MIL and father in law ko sabi hindi daw normal yung baby ko at baka may problema sya
Hindi po sya tumatagal sa isang laruan as in seconds lang sawa na sya, gapang ulit sya hahanap ng pagkaka abalahan nya. Bigyan ng maraming toys sa paligid nya, gagawin nya hahawiin nya lahat yun. Maaga man sya o late matulog grabe 4am parin ang gising nya. Akyat ng akyat sa sofa, bed at kung saan kaya nyang akyatin, aakyatin nya. Mama lang kaya nyang akyatin tapos di pa sya Tapos ngayon may bago syang style, pag nagigising umiiyak sya, yung tipong parang kinurot sya o nauntog na pag iyak. Pag ilalagay din sa crib di din makatagal kahit punuin pa ng laruan nya.. Haay haay.. Sabi nila inlaws baka epekto daw yun ng pagka hulog nya dati (nahulog kasi sya dati sa kama and yung isa sa duyan) wala naman po siguro kinalaman yun sa pagiging hyperactive ni baby diba?

As far as I know there is no direct risk but ADHD and bipolar disorder have similar traits/symptoms. There is increased risk of developing bipolar disorder if there is a family history of mental health disorders.

Too early to diagnose ADHD. Babies at that age are naturally curious so they really roam around a lot.
How is he with regards to his developmental milestones? Have you told your pedia regarding your concern? What was your pedia's impression of your baby's behavior?

Maraming salamat po sa reply Doc!isa na lang po for lifetime na po ba talaga ang adhd sa may batang meron nito?hangang kelan ang therapy nang may adhd doc?bukas ang visit nya uli sa dev pedia nya at nagpagawa na ako nang progress note sa therapist nya,sobra pa rin po ang tantrums nya gaya nang nakalimutan daw nya id nya sa service nya nagwala na sa classroom at pinagbabato nya mga books nya pag kinakausap naman sya sumusunod pero 5 yo po sya parang mahihirapan lahat nang taong makakasama nya except po ako?TIA

^ I hope your dev ped follow up went well.
As far as I know, children diagnosed with ADHD do not "outgrow" it. Some may get better as they age since they are able to control their impulses and their frustration tolerance improves. As to when to stop therapy, I think that is a question best answered by your child's dev ped and OT. It may depend kasi on whether or not you have achieved your goals prior to starting therapy.
Does he still have problems with expressing himself? Some kids kasi throw tantrums when they cannot express themselves well or they feel that nobody understands them.

doc sa language impairment nya namamana din po ba ito?kasi maikli po ang dila nya kung tawagin bio father nya naoperahan pa po para lang makapagsalita.makakatulong po kaya kung ipapatingin ko po sya para maoperahan din?TIA

@leletmd, very helpful mga insights nyo doc re:adhd. nwei, my son is 9 years old already and though we joke around of him having adhd when he's younger kasi sobrang hyper i'm actually considering of having him assessed now kasi based sa feedback ng teacher nya kulang sa focus and pansin din namin yun kc yun mga notes nya madalas kulang yun words or numbers. or when we do reviews ok na ngayon then tomorrow nalimutan na naman nya. also his grade on "does not disturb others" is needs improvement. though he's a sweet kid talaga, bolero, very friendly and madiskarte. now in confused if this is just a phase na sobrang kulit lang talaga or may adhd sya. should we see a dev pedia or just add a little more patience. any thought doc?

Gusto ko ipakonsulta sa dev ped anak ko pero nagdadalawang isip ako, he's 8 years old, delayed sya magsalita at maglakad, 5 years old sya nung pumasok sya sa school, sabi ng teacher nya restless daw, kulang sa pakikipag mingle sa ibang bata, then sabi ng teacher nya noon magbabago daw ang behavior nya after a few months, nagbago naman, nakikinig sya pag pinapagalitan, pag nag rereview kami nakikinig din, then ngayon nasa second grade na sya, pero sobrang likot, ganun din takbo ng takbo kahit kaliitan ng bahay namin, then ang sabi ng mga teachers nya e talagang sobrang likot daw hindi mapalagay sa upuan, pero hindi naman nanakit ng classmates, nakikipaglaro naman. minsan wala sa focus lalo na pag may tv. gadgets nya tinago ko na kasi isa din un sa distraction. nakikipag eye to eye contact naman sya pag kinakausap ko. pero pag alam nyang hindi na ako galit ayan nanaman takbo nanaman...

ano pa ba pwede kong gawin?

There are some cases of language impairment that is inherited or genetic in nature. Tongue tie ba ang naging problem ng father niya? Yun kasi ang pinuputol usually to improve speech development. If that is what you are worried about, your pedia or your dev ped should have been able to detect if he has that condition.
Has he undergone speech therapy already or puro OT/behavioral therapy pa lang? Madalas kasi talagang reason ng tantrums nila ang inability to convey what they want to say. Once mag-improve ang speech, usually nababawasan din ang tantrums.

What does their pedia say regarding their development?
In my opinion, walang mawawala kapag pinacheck sila sa dev ped. With the dev ped assessment, at least, mapopoint out if there are things you need to focus on, if therapy is needed, etc. Hindi pa naman too late at their age to have them assessed.

thanks doc!   we'll probably ask his teacher to fill up the evaluation sheet and have it pre-assessed by our pedia. my kids practically grow up with her checking up on them and she's in the best position to say if my son needs further evaluation. hopefully this is just a phase he will outgrow.
